They were keeping the spear point DOWN. So it was self-restraints, just to see if the shield wall can stand a wedge. if the spear points were up, the guy in front; and the next rank would be forlorn hope. He would be skewered by spear points; may be not his chest, thanks to the shield. But the spear could have slide down and hit his thigh, leg and feet.

all of these guys are probly in a decent amount of armor, however i wouldn't want to play with there weapon that they are using. playing with weapons made out of pvc pipe and foam = longer life span thank you very much
