I'm not a dancer but a spectator and I believe the dancing would be better appreciated against a light cyclorama as in the film. Who approved black costumes against a black backdrop?? Basic theatre/theater production says that's a no-no.
I love how they sstart all "I couldn't car less", go to "Alright, this is good music", to "LET'S BUST A MOVE", and right back to "Nah, still couldn't care less."
i personally prefer the orchestra's rendition in the west end and broadway productions of sweet charity. they seem much more dynamic, contrasting with the aloof dancing of the company.
@quiteuselesss This is done live on stage, not taped or filmed a shot at a time, so it will have a different dynamic also fosse did not personally work with these people in this production
Oh my God it looks like i said i was the lead girl like 4 times but i was just replying to people saying stuff about being in this. i'm not really arrogant i promise i'm so sorry for posting that so much......:/
I think its terrible. I think they are incredible perfomers, beautiful and wonderful dancers. But the frugue is meant to be a rich person's, bored, attrition to life...it is supposed to be slinky, and sexy, but also devoid of the energy present here....and for good artistic reason. Watch the film and note the difference.
Agreed. The energy is so incredibly lacking compared to the original, especially during the Heavyweight which was my favorite in the original, here, it looks butchered.
@dash1dash2 You do realize that the whole point of this dance was how rich people are so "cool" that they dance with as little movement and emotion as possible, right?
I soooooooooooo adore these set pieces. Soooo disappointing when it gets changed by some groups. Bob Fosse coreography should NEVER be mucked about with. IT IS ALREADY PERFECT.
Is it just my imagination or was a good chunk of the second movement of this dance copied almost directly in the dance scene near the end of "She's All That"?
If it was, then you've got it the other way around. She's All That copied/homaged Fosse. This number predates SAT by a few decades. If you've ever seen Sweet Charity (1969), the number in the film is just about the exact thing you see here. Then again, it's hard not to notice Fosse's influence in popular art. He's definitely left a lasting imprint on the business.
Ooooh yes. The music is great too. It's Cy Colman. He has a great jazzy sound. Listen to On the 20th Century and City of Angels. He composed those two musicals too.
love both of them! especialy love the "prologue" from "city of Angels". such an energetic piece, that i had to stop playing it in the car. It made me speed (lol).

This production has the most fantastic dancers, musicians and director imaginable. I wonder why it doesn't electrify, though?
