@aliciabrissou I never thought about that. To be honest I always thought that Roland had it in him that he could do it by himself and in 00 he realized that he needed Curt more than he thought he did. :(
I'm very sorry I ignore Roland in the 90's. Listening back to Elemental and Raoul, they are both very strong records, as is Everybody Loves a Happy Ending. I saw them live in NYC last week, and they were really impressive.
@Kiinell Really? I bet you could tell some stories. If you're so inclined, feel free to write me; I'd love to hear about Roland and how he's not down to earth. I'm guessing he's somewhat a diva? Not sure what interesting interactions you had with him, but it's sound fascinating anyway. Thanks for responding.
Tight band. Isn't that woman on bass a famous session player? I've seen her with dozen of other artists. TFF were at their creative peek here, IMO. This entire album is like a little masterpiece, on par with The Beatles best work. Tons of melodies and great arrangements.
@ritter89 - Yep. That's Gail Ann Dorsey. She's Bowie's bassist, but she toured with TFF between '93 and '96, and collaborated on songwriting with Roland.
I think Roland looks so good here. If never went out with a white man but I would have gone out with him. But pictures and interviews that I saw of him in the 2000's after he and Curt got back together up until 2 or 3 yrs ago, his face really looks so old. I can't figure out why he aged so fast. Men don't age that fast even in their 40's. Maybe he put on weight? I like him though. He is a deep soul I think the 80's sort of put him out there more than he was comfortable with. Go Roland.
wow, I saw TFF at the tender age of 17. Back then I appreciated their brilliant music and simply thought Roland was cute w/"puffy lips". 24 yrs later, he is S E X Y!!! Still puffy & smoochable lips...yum. And not to go w/out saying how much I've learned what a brilliant musician he is. Outstanding.
I wonder if there is more to this interview. Hmmmm... there should be one single gigantic online museum for all things Roland/TFF. I mean everything. Reels of old unreleased stuff, live concert footage, full length interviews of every single one ever done, every bit of picture, articles, etc.
Why everyone think that hes dick or a bit snotty here?
I think this is a polite way of answering questions that:
1-He doesnt have to answer in the first place because those are personal questions
2-Hes feed off of been asked questions like that again and again (at that period of time) Besides his behavior is not that different from other interviews.
TFF is only valid in my mind with both Curt and Roland, though Roland is definitely the stronger creative force in the band. It's just not the same with Curt's voice and Roland comes of a bit snotty here.

I actually like them both equally but in this interview Roland seems like such a... I don't know? He seems like such a dick in this interview. It actually seemed like he was trying to avoid any and all questions about what happened between him and Curt at that point.
That's was just the problem that they were facing after they broke up. When you have two extremely creative and talented people such as Curt and Roland are the chances are good that you may butt heads.
Curt and Roland just weren't getting along very well like they used to and I think that the time that they spent apart was good for them emotionally.
I don't think Curt was on his mind here.Curt wasn't even in TFF at the time.Roland just wanted to promote "Break It Down" AND Arsenio Hall was a big TFF fan! and besides Roland is probably always a dick. But still his hair is at its best here.LOL!
I agree. You know, sometimes people do not understand the multiple facets of Roland's and what he means. He is such a joy to hear speak. They shouldn't waste that precious time with overused and uninteresting questions.
@MarcusDolby I love Tears For Fears. I'm a huge fan, but I'm afraid our Roland is most certailnly NOT down to earth. Sad to say I have had to deal with him on many occasions. None of them as pretty as his songs.
@Kiinell I think it would be quite impossible to stay 'down to earth', after SFTBC, the breakup with Smith, the pressure that worldwide success brings, incurring the band's debts. And all of that happened in his early 20's, I believe. Could you handle it?
@Kiinell Roland was the pretty straightforward in one interview where he says the mistake people make is seeing him on TV and "...thinking I'm a nice guy, when really, I'm a bastard..." I believe him...he's his own man, a perfectionist and wants things his way. Those characteristics will alienate many, but ultimately is a great part of why his music and Tears for Fears were so successful, and continue to be one of the few live concerts that are as good today as they were 30 years ago.
I thought this had been removed and was heartbroken. This is one of my favorite interviews. When Roland laughs it is just so special to me. (Also, his hair is great and everything else is great, and he is just so hot!!!
