There's a lot of good jitterbug video on here if you dig for it. A good example recently was a movie called 1941 with John Belushi, a crazy army pilot who was flying over Los Angeles right after the Pearl Harbor attack and everyone in Los Angeles was thinking the japs had invaded. Funny movie. They had a really great Jitterbug scene going and then some actor, forget his name, came in (scripted) and started throwing punches and stopped the jitterbugging. Grrr, Should have left that scene alone.
@michelle6able does your nan have a name and some history about where she lived in her youth, maybe when did she work for that employer, where did she learn how to do this dance? There is much missing from the historical record about this dance, such information is very valuable to researches such as myself.
This is not Jitterbug. For those in the know this is a real treasure. This is a home video of two girls doing what was known as L.A. Swing and is now called Bal-Swing. I hope that whoever posted this has more footage of these two or anyone else in the family doing this dance. Is there any information about who these two are?
@eeynotserp These girls worked for my granfather in the early 40's. this movie was made off 8mm movies shot on top of coronado heights near lindsburg kansas. time unknown. since i was not born yet i have no idea of the names.
@eeynotserp this is not "LA swing" just because it's looks familiar, or is the same "step", there is only so much you can do with 2 feet and 4 beats of music before you see the same things appear.
what you see is typical Jitterbug swing of the late 30's and early 40's , which is still not very influenced by New York style Lindy Hop.
Bal swing is 1980's style. it has these elements however most people only do Maxie Dorf's "come around and toss out" which is lindy influenced.
@2barbreak I agree that it appears to have elements of other dances styles in it. I am a Bal dancer who comes from the WIllie Desatoff style and we also do the same come around toss out which I do not see in any Lindy Smooth or Savoy.
I will show this video to Lila Desatoff sometime this week and ask her opinion. Is it possible that this is a merging of some local swing style done in the area these girls lived in with some LA Swing that thy saw someone do, perhaps at the Worlds Fair?
@eeynotserp I knew Willie very well, and of course Lila....I ran the Cal Balboa Swing championships for 5 years. and learned a great deal from those who originated the dance in Los Angeles. check out my channel twobarbreak, it has more dance stuff then the 2barbreak channel. I've researched this topic for many years, and I've found people that dance almost identical to this, in Montana, Kansas, as north as Chicago and as south as New Orleans. They either call it Jitterbug, Two step or Swing.
@2barbreak I believe I know you. Did you teach at one of Shesha"s Inspiration Weekends? I am a close personal friend of Lila's as well as many of the older Bal dancers. I also work with Laura K, Jen S. and Jeremy, as well as Freda and so many others. Please reply and I'll email you to hook up.
@eeynotserp yes, I've known Shesha for about 15 plus years....but no, i've never worked for him, aside from putting on a Pure Balboa weekend together in Newport beach. Hit me up if you'd like, peter
@2barbreak Ah yes. Peter the swing historian. I remember the Bal event in Newport. It was 2006 I believe. Lila speaks very highly of you. I'll hit you up. Preston
them are 2 ''hep kittens'' as they would say...some real ''able gables'' and ''whistle bait''..they had the ''gams'' for ''hoofing'' and yes...they could really ''cut a rug''...todays music/video choreographers could do with a lesson from the past on class...
OMFG! Is that two women dancing together and holding hands back in the day?

Two girls wearing pants? That's not jitterbugging in the 40s. Real jitterbugging in the 40s was one guy, one girls, a flowing skirt and garter belt.

Think again.

I would imagine that since time imemorial there have been times when girls wanted to dance, but the guys wouldn't, so the girls danced together.
