IR Radiation creates an Electromagnetic energy signature(like any other energy/radiation source) Aircraft create different IR sources ranging from leading edge surface/skin IR to exhaust/engine hot section IR. Older IR Missile Seekers were primitive in their ability to both filter and process differentials in IR sources and their Electromagnetic signatures/ranges. Newer advances such as SFPA's and Advanced EMS discrimination/filtering make it nearly impossible for Flares & DIRCM to be effective
@RepaleoN Because the USAF uses drones with remote controls, Its very difficult for the airplanes to react and fly like a human would. Plus the 9X with its thrust vector and upgraded guidance system..
Since the AIM-9X has off-boresight capability, it could lock on to any enemy aircraft no matter where they are, whether in front or on the left or right of the plane.
Ummmm ....big limt of IR. Virtually, through the use of the countermeasures , the head has always been confusing: The first launch of flare have practically created a track to bring the missile in the tail (but not touching the plane) and second they put the dispenser under the wing so that it hit! Who knows changing the frequency or the directional of launching what would happen? Ah, the Rino have 60 year old.........
@AngstFisch, The last plane is clearly throwing flares and chaff. The reason why it is classified is the AIM-9X is a heat seeking missile. The counter to heat seeking missiles are flares. Flares obviously don't work against the AIM-9X. The sensor is tuned enough to tell the difference between an aircraft and another heat source. My guess is that it looks for specific heat ranges on the aircraft. That's why the missile center punched a drone rather than went for the engine.
@orlock20 I've worked with fighter jet weapons systems actually. And If it's anything like the IRIS-T missile it recognized the shape of the plane as a thermal heat source and won't be thrown of by flares. And chaff don't work against Aim-9 missiles as the Aim-9s don't use radar. And I wasn't questioning anything.
@whatthehell81, the AIM 9X is a heat guided missile. Flares are used to counter heat seeking missiles. The AIM-9X can tell the difference between a flare and an aircraft from the heat difference. Obviously that was an earlier film since another shoot down clearly shows the drone throwing flares.
I wonder how well the AIM-9X does against more maneouvrable targets...

@aussiebear22 these missiles can pull 30+G turns, no plane on earth can outmaneuver this missile.

@ChiefOfDaReefa the f4 did not try half a screw up and then dive down toward the missile.. well at least it wasnt all that clear on the video..
the f4 did try the fly into manuavre but that did not work xD

I'll take that F-4 if all you're going to do is blow it up ;)

@spiritneverdie1 python 4 is mostly better then aim9x, not mentioning python5 which is completly revolutionary comparing to python4

Probably because the exact workings of either the warhead or the countermeasures are confidential.

They edited the part of the picture, where the last plane is dropping a lot of flares. Why that?

@whatthehell81 hi amigo, the airplane lauches flares, beacuse the missile has a heat search sensor, that's why :)
