@mtenor Most churches have to use whoever volunteers for the post. Many churches don't have organists/musicians at all. There isn't a queue of fully competent musicians out there just dying to play every Sunday for 'fun' wages. However, a couple can usually hire their own musician if they prefer not to use the church volunteer.

Have just come across this.  I happen to know both the church and the organist - but my lips are sealed!!! What most posts have said here is true, in defense however, I will say that this person is of an extremely nervous disposition with poor eyesight and had worked hard to try and get it right. On the day, and not feeling welll, nerves took over and we have all heard the unfortunate results. From experience I know that in a relaxed situation this person is/was a fairy capable player.

He clearly didn't reherse at all. what he should have done is slowed it own a bit more so that he could keep up with himself, but to stop dead, that's highly unprofessional, highly.

I think its actually rather sad how people think this is amusing. Playing the organ at any service can be terrifying, let alone weddings. For an 85 year old to play a wedding is impressive in itself, and he should be congratulated not insulted. He tried, and that's all that really matter: shame on those who are giving him abuse.
