I used this tune at my wedding, with the original Silly Wizard recording. Phil is such a talented artist/composer it's ridiculous. I saw him in concert and told him about using the song and sorry for not asking permission/giving him royalties :-). He said it was no pb. Now the royalties from the PBS series mentionned above... Those, he would have like to see, he said. Not doubt they would have been juicier...
You do the song justice-- really nice. I thank you for it. As for the Cunninghams/Silly Wizard, knew them well too. I remember Johnny telling us when we were all still in Scotland how excited he was to be going to America to work. Saw them a few times after we came back, esp Phil.
Phil wrote this just after a good friend of his from Boys of the Lough(Tich Richardson) was killed in a car accident in Scotland in the early 80s. The Boys had stayed with us the night before in Mallaig and I'll never forget that day. Truly an incredible song that isn't known by enough people. Phil wouldn't play it for years afterwards in concert.
@craigpei I had no idea. We play it on so many gigs and someone always comments and asks about it. In concert I often mention seeing Silly Wizard in 1979 at The Main Point in Bryn Mawr PA thinking they were grizzled road veterans and then finding out Johnny was younger than me when I read his obituary. Would love play it with Phil someday. Thanks for the note.
