Thank you for uploading this DrangonflyNoir10, this is my favourite film of all time. I haven't seen it in 3 years. It is just mesmerising from beginning to end, every character has depth, the story is completely engaging and moving. 10 out of 10. Brenda Bleythen should most certainly won the Oscar.
I love this scene so much. Paul hardly says a word but, his character is so watchable throughout. He looks quite uncomfortable and twitchy, scratching himself, downing that lager when Maurice asks anyone for a top up....shows he likes his drink a bit too much. Just amazing
In other Mike Leigh's films, "Happy-Go-Lucky" and "Another Year", the characters were shown sitting together in a backyard. Is it a trademark of Mike Leigh? I haven't watched the rest of his films.
To hell with Roxanne her mom shoulda decked her stupid spoiled ass for pushin her like that. She shoulda knocked her out earlier when she got pushed before. But I applaued the acting and the realness that it represented. A true wonderful, wonderful movie.
Monica is an ice queen, totally cold on the inside - she shows gives an evil, knife-edged look when the card loaded with cash is presented. She would not have allowed Maurice to give with his money generously to anyone else if she was given the chance to intervene. 21st birthday of a family member? No. Even a steak is out of the question. Controlling. The house is set up her way. Hmmmm....
And Mike Leigh has made it clear at this point that her impending menopause is just a sideshow.
Roxanne was a rude, disrespectful, evil and spoiled little wench; but I must give props to the young lady who played that role because she did an AWESOME job. I LOVE this movie!!!
Is it tradition to wear white for someone's birthday party in the UK? Monica and Maurice have on blue, and Hortense is rocking the striking black as usual.
@lavinder11 No Lavinder11 there is no traditional colours for a birthday. However it is tradition to wear black at funerals, which I would guess is similar to US.
Roxanne, whew... Pebbles Flintstone gone wrong...

Lol that's some really messed up timing. I'd be so pissed off at Cynthia for revealing things that way.

Paul's expressions are priceless.

Nope, not tradition that I'm aware of. Just coincidence, or an effect of Leigh's.

@lavinder11 I could be wrong, but it's to emphasis that Hortense is the black sheep so to speak of the group.
