Waiting for the government will always bring disaster. People need to reach out and help people, they are better at doing it. Anything the government gets involved in, gets worse, costs more, and loses the effectiveness that existed before. I am glad that a lot of people came and helped before the government came, and that they did not hesitate.
Being a resident of New Orleans before and after Katrina I know that both black and white people suffered equally. It was a destruction of the poor. After the hurricane and initial destruction, it was genocide by the Federal Government. People died, people suffered, people are still suffering.
You can say it was the Federal Gov's fault but in reality it was Blanco not calling for the National Guard until days after the storm hit...the Federal Government can't move by law in until the state orders it. Blanco had the call and blew it...thank God we elected Jindal.
I certainly hope you have learned the truth about this. Blanco asked for Guard troops before the storm. The blame does rest on the Bush administration, on the neoliberal greed machine, on the misguided racists and classists and self-righteous who told themselves that the poor and the black and the ignorant asked for God's wrath or somehow deserved it anyhow. We have seen the face of evil time and again, and we all deserve better, especially these suffering. Remember to vote on November 4.
lets not do the racial thing. Maybe "the Blacks" were going crazy. Its sad how the situation was handled, or not handled. Racism is not in anymore. Come up to 2007 where we're all mature and equal.

What is sad is how the blacks acted after the storm with their looting, raping and killing!
