The idea is to get as close as possible to talent without getting in the frame. This is the number one problem THE NUMBER ONE PROBLEM. People think that's the idea of a shotgun so they can be far a way - that is not true. He makes a great point in that "H" position, that is correct and that last statement, it about getting close and then mixing and adjusting balances
Pointing the mic toward the sky gives a different toneality to the ground so if you are going to do one or the other dont change through the shoot or you listening audience will notice, by the way your gain was a little high on the Lav mic
It's bad form how you guys are teaching to lean the boom pole on your shoulders, it creates friction noises in your audio, you should always keep the pole levitated at least slightly.
What? You should have checked before you bought your camera. The canon zr960 is a fantastic point and shoot camera that only costs 300$. It has a mic jack
i'm a film student and i've learned more from watching like an hour of these videos than i have from a semesters worth of classes. this is so much more interesting...
"Zepplin"? "Microphon"? You guys are misspelling words just like the pros now. And "directional" doesn't mean it doesn't pick up "far away sounds", it means it only picks up sound from the direction it's pointed at.
Nice video buddy. :) So is a boom mike being used on you int this video... :p
One idea for the holding of the boom is to use a tripod with a adaption peice to hold it for you for shots where the subject(s) do not move, and the shot might take a long time to take. You can still twist the boom to turn the mic at the sound source just by not tighening up on connection where the boom rests on the tri-pod helper. :) I mention this for people who might be disabled. :)

filipinofear13 11 months ago
@filipinofear13 The extension that you're holding is called a boom.
ShitMyCatsOnFire 9 months ago
Those wind screens are actually called dead cats, not just jokingly.

there actually is a wind cover called a deadcat.

They are teaching how to use a mic but the sound they have is super horrible and popping the whole time.

stupid music annoyed me so much
kiwishark123 1 year ago
the irony is that the guy's voice is overpowering the mic which blurs it out. LOL

do you connect the microphone to computer or to camera

Too much clipping!!! I find it funny that an instructional video on a mic contains such a bad recording of audio.
FYI videomaker - there are a couple of spelling mistakes at 1:33 (Microphon, Zepplin).

If the boom pole had a counterwieght then it would be totally easy to hold the thing
ChrisW12208 2 years ago
YEA! AND DOUBLE THE WEIGHT TOO! If you've ever actually used one you would know to hold it over the back of your shoulders so its not as heavy.
tylerpomeroy 2 years ago
Yeah! Tylerpomeroy is right a counter wieght is the last thing you need, its not a very difficult thing to hold for a long time.
The engineers spent a long time making it nice and light I'd hate to undo their good work :)
