Saw them live in Belfast this year... such an amazing energy from them. Craig was sweating from pores I didn't even know existed but he just kept going. I bow before these guys!
I know these guys are supposed to be a retro band, but doesn't anyone else kinda think that this is quite ahead of its times. the key change from verse to chorus are well daring, as are the lyrics.
@ziggy1415 It's progressive rock - the kind of stuff people were doing 30 years ago. For some reason everyone went back to simpler arrangements for a while. Glad to see people are breaking out of the box again.
@ned2350 I wouldn't call it progressive rock. Progressive rock is like Pink Floyd and King Crimson. But they are definitely inventive and not afraid to break out of the box
I have a love/hate feel for these guys. Sometimes I get the meaning of a song, and sometimes I think a song like this was just made to make a filler song to make the album longer and that's it.. Someone explain if i'm wrong.
@OakRidgePunk777 idk man, not every song from a band can be great. sometimes that's just the record company's doing: no one is gonna buy an album from a band for $15 that has only 4 or 5 songs on it. even if those songs are amazing.
@cambodiancunny No. actually they're an awesome band. You may not like all of their stuff, but you can't listen to Crawl or Black Thumbnail or McFearless and say they don't rock. Really, get up to that search bar and look up those songs. Do it now.
@ZachWildSuxxx you don't need to have a great voice to be a great singer. Bob Dylan is IMO the greatest of all time yet his voice isn't conventionally great.
As much as I like The Hold Steady and as much as I love Richard Manuel and The Band, I'm going to have to disagree about that. When it comes to singing Richard Manuel's voice is untouchable
Love this song. Always seemed like one of those songs that should've been kind of a hit to me. Catchy as hell, great energy, great lyrics. Too bad they were still struggling to get any recognition back then.
these guys are pretty inspiring. If that guy can make a band really good and sound good even if he can't sing, then why can't I? The lyrics are pretty amazing btw I just read them. He's got a lot to say for somebody that sings like a Bob Dylan with a different accent.
Want to make a correction though, not just NYC, this is Minneapolis' band too! I should say actually that this is our band and we're damned proud of em
I don't think you understand what I'm saying. The hold steady aren't punk, but they're "punk as fuck". "Punk as fuck" being that thing you do when you aren't following trends like Punk and are instead making amazing music about whatever you feel like.
You're right about that, Katie. I first heard this band on a college radio station and thought "Who's this guy that sounds like Bruce Springsteen fronting an alternative band?" After hearing this band on the radio periodically and wondering who they are, I finally went to Yahoo! Answers and basically asked "Who's this guy who sounds like an alternative Bruce Springsteen?" Apparently someone else agrees with you and I because he knew who I was talking about.
this kind of singing is enough for a angry rocksong. but the singer really looks like a businessman from wallstreet who have lost five billions for his company and then his job there.... hehehe. but i love the music.

I don't understand. I think their music is great but I think it would be fantastic if the guy would just effing SING. Not everyone is a Chris Cornell, but at least try to sound like something other than Chris Farley trying to be heard over some music at a bar.
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
Exactly.
Great band, but get a proper singer instead of that awkwardly crooning Randy Newman lookalike. It makes the good music of the band come off as over intellectual and completely pretentious.
I've yet to make it all the way through a song because of it.
can anyone tell me if there are lyrics to a song from the hold steady that says "time to time to help us find who we are and whats inside because you cant keep running away from what your trying to find"
I was up late watching THS and old Cult clips...it occured to me some bands can only translate attitude to performance...do enough blow to sweatshake a trance.. or be the Hold Steady and translate attitude into MUSIC. This rocks the rest are posers...
Finn worships Joe Strummer...you know the line in "Constructive Summer" that goes "raise a toast to St. Joe Strummer, i think he might have been our only decent teacher."
Almost all of their first two albums and a lot of their most recent is about Finn's life and stories while he was in Lifter Puller. A lot of people from the Twin Cities (where they were based) look upon The Hold Steady with a "who are you trying to impress" attitude because he's such a friggin' homer. They're really good, but as someone who's lived in Minneapolis his whole life, I could do without so many references to the area. Song after song after song...
I'm getting into this band--I'm going to see them live at the Roundhouse in London 17th Dec 08--good old fashioned rock n roll--I think if I drink a load of beers--it will be like watching the best pub band in the world..
Rawr! I don't like the same music you do! Your opinions are overrated and accepted by the mainstream so they must be wrong!
Er, right, The Hold Steady. This is my favorite band. Never actually watched any of their videos. This one isn't all that special, just a typical music video. But the song is awesome, as are most Hold Steady songs.
The only way to really get Hold Steady is to spend a few years rolling around with old Lifter Puller tapes.
These guys are so unlike most other rock bands, never a chorus, toxic poetry that grabs your brain and squeezes. Recurring characters, it's music that breaks the 3 minute song barrier, since each song is just a few frames of a larger story.
There is no possible way to "overrate" Finn, he's brought the allusion to Rock in a way that even guys like Lloyd Cole and Paul Haig couldn't.
theyre actually pretty overrated right now. complete with full page reviews in all of the "indie" magazines and myspace band features. personally im not they're biggest fan
people only say theyre the 'most important band in america' because they read that in NME or SPIN. the truth is that this band has absolutely zero talent. the vocalist is god awful (not to mention reeeaaallllly fucking arrogant) and the band sounds like a shitty old pub band. nothing special...or even listenable for that matter.
