  • Like a The clash !

  • Craig Finn= Genius. If you don't like this band, you have no respect for the significance of lyrics in songs.

  • THIS BAND HAVE GREAT TONE!!!

  • awsome angst lyrical band with good meaningful not winning lyrics.

  • @DreamingInReverse Me too!! It's going to be such a good concert! :D :D

  • This video was just added to a music playlist at JustPlay.fm

  • Saw them live in Belfast this year... such an amazing energy from them. Craig was sweating from pores I didn't even know existed but he just kept going. I bow before these guys!

  • I am going to be follow them from 8/24 to 9/2. Its 9 different spots, so if anyone is planning on going to the show it would be cool to know someone.

  • @ned2350 if its the type of stuff people were doing 30 years ago its hardly progressive

  • It was good and then the singer opened his mouth.

  • If you like The Hold Steady check out Lifter Puller (same guys but rawer and younger)

  • @gordermusic

I saw you post that before.

  • @gordermusic eh there all right

  • If you like The Hold Steady you have to hear Lifter Puller (rawer and younger but the same guys)

  • If you like The Hold Steady you have to hear Lifter Puller (rawer and younger but the same guys)

  • I know these guys are supposed to be a retro band, but doesn't anyone else kinda think that this is quite ahead of its times. the key change from verse to chorus are well daring, as are the lyrics.

  • @ziggy1415 It's progressive rock - the kind of stuff people were doing 30 years ago. For some reason everyone went back to simpler arrangements for a while. Glad to see people are breaking out of the box again.

  • @ned2350 I wouldn't call it progressive rock. Progressive rock is like Pink Floyd and King Crimson. But they are definitely inventive and not afraid to break out of the box

  • hahahahaha mfao wtf i this lol

  • I freakin LOVE Lifter Puller.

  • nice song

  • I have a love/hate feel for these guys. Sometimes I get the meaning of a song, and sometimes I think a song like this was just made to make a filler song to make the album longer and that's it.. Someone explain if i'm wrong.

  • @OakRidgePunk777 this band make music because they love music, they don't do fillers... every song means something to these guys.

  • @Shadowpl4y stfu lol you think this is music its called crap

  • @OakRidgePunk777 idk man, not every song from a band can be great. sometimes that's just the record company's doing: no one is gonna buy an album from a band for $15 that has only 4 or 5 songs on it. even if those songs are amazing.

  • these guys rock. just saw them in toledo ohio. well worth the price of admission.

  • i like the music but idk about the vocals ...

  • @caterpillartastic its kinda like an elvis costello but a little raspier. its different

  • cool story bro

  • He mentions Patty Smyth. This dude's cool.

  • I didn't care much for this band until I saw them live. They're amazing. Now I like the records.

  • I'm all for Rock n' Roll throwback bands... But Oasis is BY FAR my favorite

  • @MrStupidcomputer Fuck yeaah!! mine too!!

  • Kings of Leon suck a big soggy dick, I don't think I need to justify my point of view.

  • @cambodiancunny Although I disagree with your statement, I respect your opinion and will allow you to speak without repercussions.

  • @cambodiancunny but not realy..

  • @cambodiancunny No. actually they're an awesome band. You may not like all of their stuff, but you can't listen to Crawl or Black Thumbnail or McFearless and say they don't rock. Really, get up to that search bar and look up those songs. Do it now.

  • @blancmage31

Which is your OPINION, and NOT FACT. Way to fail, retard.

  • The singer kills any chance of this band being any good. Not unlike Kings of Leon.

  • @ZachWildSuxxx you don't need to have a great voice to be a great singer. Bob Dylan is IMO the greatest of all time yet his voice isn't conventionally great.

  • @ZachWildSuxxx how is that kings of leon sucks i think

  • meh

  • What constitutes a bar band? Do you they actually have to play in a bar or does it have to do with the music?

  • Randy Newman meets Elvis Costello.

  • this song is so dope

  • This video is Franz Ferdinand-tastic! I love Hold Steady.

  • @bigchiefredskin578 Franz Ferdinand couldn't hold a candle to Hold Steady

  • The verse always reminds me of school of rock

Awesome song and fantastic band, though!

  • no lyrics can make up for this song's pure blowingness. it's a word ni gger

  • Hahaha I knew a guy called Robo.

  • @LatumWay you mean, like a Robot-hobo?

  • @boladepapelaluminio No dude. His second name was roberry. We called him robo.

A robot hobo would be awesome though.

  • @LatumWay sorry if you listen he doesnt care where the melt comes from... Rick Danko and Robbie Robertson are members of"the Band"

  • rick danko-robby robertson. the band rocks. so does the hold steady.

  • Love this song. Always seemed like one of those songs that should've been kind of a hit to me. Catchy as hell, great energy, great lyrics. Too bad they were still struggling to get any recognition back then.

  • there is quite a different sound between bob mould and craig finn...if that's where you are getting at!

  • i really love their sound, but i always wonder how i would think of them if they had a different vocalist...

  • gotta be honest, I as much as I like craig's vocals, it's the LYRICS that really get me. his storytelling is 10X more valuable than his voice

  • The anger and anxiety of this guy little reminds me of Mark E. Smith. Like to hear those two battle on stage!

  • Who's the DP? Love the almost Cyrylic shit

Let's see Most People Are DJs

  • We Gotta start it with a positive jam.

  • That's a good fucking video.

Hey kids, look up an album called Almost Killed Me.

  • these guys are pretty inspiring. If that guy can make a band really good and sound good even if he can't sing, then why can't I? The lyrics are pretty amazing btw I just read them. He's got a lot to say for somebody that sings like a Bob Dylan with a different accent.

  • I know what you mean dude, just goes to show if you've got some heart then you can do it even if you can't sing for shit.

  • @FakeFlourescentSkies I don't think he sounds like Dylan. I think he sounds like Springsteen.

  • So they're not punk, but hell, this is the punk style and sound.

I hate punk, but I love this.

  • Congratulations, you just won the award for most contradictions in a YouTube comment.

  • @spameister hey they got the name of the band right

  • @TheGameKat and

  • @spameister i guess i have low expectations of youtube accuracy

  • @TheGameKat hey its an alright band check out there song (your little hood rat friend)

  • Want to make a correction though, not just NYC, this is Minneapolis' band too! I should say actually that this is our band and we're damned proud of em

  • What a great fucking band

  • saw them last night at the xpn festival in camden new jersey. it was friggin aweseome! i was in the front row.

  • there is so much bruce springsteen influance hear! I like it :)

  • You're right about that, Katie. I first heard this band on a college radio station and thought "Who's this guy that sounds like Bruce Springsteen fronting an alternative band?" After hearing this band on the radio periodically and wondering who they are, I finally went to Yahoo! Answers and basically asked "Who's this guy who sounds like an alternative Bruce Springsteen?" Apparently someone else agrees with you and I because he knew who I was talking about.

  • The song is great!

    The video however... sucks.

  • If you don't like the singing then you don't understand punk.

  • lol at you.

  • If you think this is punk then you don't understand The Hold Steady.

  • they may not be "punk"

    but they're punk as fuck

  • ther not punk at all.

  • I don't think you understand what I'm saying. The hold steady aren't punk, but they're "punk as fuck". "Punk as fuck" being that thing you do when you aren't following trends like Punk and are instead making amazing music about whatever you feel like.

  • this kind of singing is enough for a angry rocksong. but the singer really looks like a businessman from wallstreet who have lost five billions for his company and then his job there.... hehehe. but i love the music.

  • Saw them live last night...Balls.

  • they supporting counting crows?... think they are at MEN on monday

  • Yeah They are.

  • saw them 2 weeks ago at MEN. the lead singer spat over everyone includidng the steward who didnt look happy. The keyboardist was cool though haha!

  • The infamous moustache.

  • can anyone tell me if there are lyrics to a song from the hold steady that says "time to time to help us find who we are and whats inside because you cant keep running away from what your trying to find"

  • dude beatleslovelucy thats a chronic future song.

  • cool thanks man!the reason why i asked the weird question is because i was oon this page that told me it was from this band...thanks again dude

  • no problem chips ahoy is my fav song by the hold steady tho.

  • Well you're an idiot

  • Or kids from the twin cities who really lived what they're singing about, and actually like bar bands.

  • lol am i the only person who hates the sound of craig finn's voice but tolerates the band for the guy with the beard?

  • finn is fucking brilliant

  • i'd like to punch finn in the face, but this band is still awesome

  • what did Craig Finn do specifically? since u still seem to like The Hold Steady

  • I was up late watching THS and old Cult clips...it occured to me some bands can only translate attitude to performance...do enough blow to sweatshake a trance.. or be the Hold Steady and translate attitude into MUSIC. This rocks the rest are posers...

  • Video is like a cross between early Elvis Costello and Hüsker Dü.

  • mmmm I love such bands ^^

  • he looks like costello and sings like richard manuel

  • As much as I like The Hold Steady and as much as I love Richard Manuel and The Band, I'm going to have to disagree about that. When it comes to singing Richard Manuel's voice is untouchable

  • Comment removed

  • Is this also the coldwar kids?

  • get lost.

  • Fuck your mother

  • i cannot get over how much the vocalist sounds like bob mould...but still an awesome band

  • love the song!

  • they're just so damn good.

  • woah where are these guys from?

  • NewYork baby!!! :P

  • haha ok thanks cuz they were talking about shaker heights and i'm from around there

  • Well craig the lead singer was born in Shaker Heights.

  • Originally, most of the band is actually from the Minneapolis area, hence all the twin cities references in other songs.

  • Technically New York... but New York is a shithole...

    So, Minneapolis

  • Any one else notice how Craig's got the whole Joe Strummer thing going on throughout this entire video?

  • Finn worships Joe Strummer...you know the line in "Constructive Summer" that goes "raise a toast to St. Joe Strummer, i think he might have been our only decent teacher."

  • Haha, yeah, I know.

He's just got the whole leg pump thing going on throughout the whole thing, and he's playing guitar just like Joe. Just an observation.

  • saw them on jools holland i am totally hooked now

  • mee too!

  • i'm not sure if i like the band yet but this video is a bit of a rip off seven nation army, does this song remind you of the song from School of Rock

  • Pound some brews pop some pills and go see the Hold Steady. Create a memory that you will never forget...or forget instantaneously.

  • Wow...just discovered "The hold Steady" Well impressed will definately make them my new focus

  • great band- they should keep the siuts!

  • awesome song... but what the hell does it mean! lol

  • Almost all of their first two albums and a lot of their most recent is about Finn's life and stories while he was in Lifter Puller. A lot of people from the Twin Cities (where they were based) look upon The Hold Steady with a "who are you trying to impress" attitude because he's such a friggin' homer. They're really good, but as someone who's lived in Minneapolis his whole life, I could do without so many references to the area. Song after song after song...

  • saw them at the roundhose

    fucking brilliant

  • It's cool to see someone from around the way to make it. Go Mr. Jorganson

  • I'm getting into this band--I'm going to see them live at the Roundhouse in London 17th Dec 08--good old fashioned rock n roll--I think if I drink a load of beers--it will be like watching the best pub band in the world..

  • Rawr! I don't like the same music you do! Your opinions are overrated and accepted by the mainstream so they must be wrong!

Er, right, The Hold Steady. This is my favorite band. Never actually watched any of their videos. This one isn't all that special, just a typical music video. But the song is awesome, as are most Hold Steady songs.

  • the more you listen to this band, the better they get. I can't get enough of them.

For all those people who don't like them...

Keep listening. You'll learn to love it.

  • Finn brings a lot of people to mind, early Elvis Costello... and Springsteen before the ice cream got to him. More please.. this is choice.

  • my first similarity i heard during the opening was The Who --- forceful intro --- as if to say, "Hey, listen up! We got somethin' to say."

    fabulous powerhouse. aMAZing sound.

  • thanx Denise, this is cool, Ive never heard these guys before woulja believe?

    ;D

  • this is the cleanest i've ever seen them.

    fuckin' great concert!

  • The only way to really get Hold Steady is to spend a few years rolling around with old Lifter Puller tapes.

These guys are so unlike most other rock bands, never a chorus, toxic poetry that grabs your brain and squeezes. Recurring characters, it's music that breaks the 3 minute song barrier, since each song is just a few frames of a larger story.

There is no possible way to "overrate" Finn, he's brought the allusion to Rock in a way that even guys like Lloyd Cole and Paul Haig couldn't.

  • Good tune..reminiscent of Patti Smith's Rock n Roll N

  • I don't know why. But I fucking love Craig Finn's voice. I don't feel like I should. Maybe that's why.

  • Remarkable.

  • hi voice is annoying

  • The video is really good, although it reminded seven nation army video at the beginning. I like it a lot.

  • r u reallu the fav of daniel radcliff!!!

    gosh! T_T

nothing to say about the.....u know.!

  • ah I prefer the noisier more melodioc Archers Of Loaf..........

  • He has a little bon scott in his voice...not sure if im obsessed or irritated with his voce.

  • i really like this band, but craig finn, is that his name, his voice is not the greatest. his enthusiasm wins me over though.

  • love this song

the hold steady is the most underrated band in the world right now-- i liked them better on almost killed me and seperation sunday... but they're still amazing

lifter puller is awesome too-- more raw and original at times but i like the hold steady better... the marriage of classic rock and indie and craig finn in general is just... phenomenal = ] = ]

  • theyre actually pretty overrated right now. complete with full page reviews in all of the "indie" magazines and myspace band features. personally im not they're biggest fan

  • mommyimadeapoopy drinks his own piss

  • Personally I've never heard anyone say they're the 'most important band in america'. Although if I did I'd think they were a bit of an idiot. A pretty mediocre band.

  • i came right over the counter just to kiss you!

  • the vid kinda looks like a reverse seven nation army.

  • saw them in SF tonight...sadly they didn't break out the swish...

  • best band in america, without doubt.

  • sounds like Jim Carrol............"Catholic Boy"..These Are People Who Died"...

  • 4 of them are from Minnesota only one is from NY. They hate ppl saying they are an NY band

  • are they amaerica's 'boy kill boy' i wonder? Cats and pigeons spring to mind !

  • "mafiagnome12: personally i like Lifter Puller better

but The Hold Steady is a good band"

    No you don't.

  • dumbass.. lifter/puller is awesome maybe he does!

twin cities! they're gangin up on me!

  • Best fucking band in America. No shit.
