This record was the 1st of 3 singles---and the last ones---to be released on the final Martha Reeves & The Vandellas album, "Black Magic" (1972 Gordy/Motown); the 2nd single was the magnificent Ashford & Simpson song, "Tear It On Down" and the 3rd from The Corporation, The Jackson 5's exclusive songwriting team, "Bless You." Reeves stated in an interview that several of the tracks were brought to the studio in boxes with the name "Diana Ross" on them, Martha feeling Diana rejected these songs.
Great song !!! It's too bad that during the time of this records release the powers that be at Motown did not give a damn about the fans and some of the groups that we really loved other that diana Ross and a few others. It's amazing to look back at all of the great songs and groups that never got what they deserved!!! UNSUNG!!!
ahhhhhhhhhh....the memories. i remember my early 20's and playing this song on the jukebox at the club. you could get 3 songs for a quarter. one time this guy shouted out, "whoever played that song, give 'em their money back!" LOL!! he came up and kept feeding quarters into the jukebox so i could play that song over and over. i must have listed to it for about 2 hours until finally somebody shouted, "ENOUGH!"
This is another laid back beauty that was never released in the UK, although it's on the "Black Magic" album. However Martha's US career (with Motown) was on the wane by then. I remember ordering it "blind" from Contempo Records via 'Blues & Soul' magazine in early 1972. I still have it! Lovely record and a good choice.
The Soulhawk. Thank you, Thank you, I love this song. For At least about 2 years ago, I was searching for this song on youtube, Thanks to you I found it. my Mom played this song. Good memories. This has been added to one of my favorites.
I remember this song so well back when I was younger - I was also surprised that this song didn't even make the Hot 100, it bubbled under at number 117 back in January-Feburary of 1972 - I believe this song would have put Martha and the Vandellas back on top again!!!

This tune was released by Motown on December 16, 1971, and unfortunately, it bubbled under the Billboard Hot 100 in early 1972, at number 117-

Very underrated Motown record. One of her best, I think.
