hey Eliiot i was wondering if you could help me out, i am a tall teen, i am 17 and now 195 pounds, i have gained a lot of weight over the past few months, i have also learned a lot over the past 6 years of lifting, i think i have fixed a lot of my problems, i still have a few like psture, but your videos are helping, thanks :). but my lower back really hurts when i deadlift, squat, run mainly anything involving i think the hip, its not like a lower back problem, since the pain comes in above my
serratus anterior HELPS to stop winging all you are doing with these exercises is fixing the scapula in a non functional position. you say pull back the shoulder blades when the scapula actually rotates upward in an overhead position not down. Sorry dude but these aren't good exercises.
what about serratus anterior? It's my understanding that SA is the muscle which attaches to the antero-medial aspect of your scapula and acts to prevent winging during retraction.
I like to do face pulls for rhomboids using a cable system (homemade lol).
Face pulls are great for rhomboids. They can be easily set between push up sets. Try to row to your face or atleast to the upper chest or neck.
Also, I found one tip on T-nation - do 100 band pull aparts every day. Just take a band and pull it apart across your sets, really squeezing those shoulder blades. The band should be light enough that you could do 25 reps without big tireness.
thank you. this has helped tremendously. I had a shoulder injury when I was younger and assumed that this was something that wasn't a problem anymore.
You are my hero Damn it! lol! I hold a 4-5 pound welding torch in my right hand for 9 hours a day only pausing for a lunch break and two 15 minute breaks every day for 13 years. I'm able to weight train again with your tips. haven't been able to for 3 years because of extreme shoulder ache and pain. I can't tell you how much both admiration and appreciation I have!
Thank god you made a video on the subject. I've had this problem since I was very young and it has plagued me from the start. Thanks for making recovery just that much quicker and do not be afraid to add to this. There are plenty more out there where I came from.
Awesome tips! I figured out I had this problem when I tried doing the scarecrow with dumbbells. When I tried to just move my arms, my entire shoulder rolled forward with the dumbbell.
hey dude thanks so much for this. my winging causes me lots of anxiety but i may have a damaged thoracic nerve because it hurts for days after when i do these excersizes
Yo Elliot here's my question. So I understand that winging scapula is associated with kyphosis, and kyphosis is associated with lordosis. In this video you prescribe the prone cobra holds to strengthen the upper back musculature and fix kyphosis, but at the same time aren't you just further strengthening the already tight lower back (lordosis) with the cobra holds? I have both kyphosis and lordosis of the spine so I'm wondering if the prone cobra holds will be helpful to me. Thanks brother
Good stuff! It worked perfect for me. My non dominate side has a way tighter upper trap, bicep, and chest. Causing more strain and pain on my dominate side.
@strengthcamp I have this problem, have had it for many years now but seem to do ok managing it. I want to do better than manage the injury though, I want to get back to intense lifting for my pecs, delts, etc. Along with these tips, how important is strengthening the serratus? Does it come into this equation at all?
yo elliot- i appreciate this video a lot because I have this issue. I am going to be adding these exercises as well as my current YsTs and Ls. but do you know how long it will take for me to get my posture corrected? i know nothing is a fast process but will this take years or months? thanks
Great video. Makes me mad I wasted $600 on (useless) physical therapy for a winging scapula last year. Spent 2 months out of the gym doing bullshit exercises designed for old people until I discovered some of the LEGIT solutions that are mentioned here. At least the therapist was hot.
Hey man, great tips you're giving to people... ive been suffering with shoulder injuries on and off for a couple of years and all of that due to muscle imbalances... You pointed out the most important bit right there!!! keep up the good work... peace from Greece!!!!
YO ELLIOT! Good information right here man, i dont have a winging scapula but my lower traps are not where they should be strength wise and it causes spasms in my upper back, these exercises and stretches work very well.
Elliot is wearing an Alex Jones T-shirt again. Yo Elliot! Don't you feel ashamed to promote 9/11 conspiracy theories in light of the thousands of innocent people who were massacred that day? What if your wife or children(God forbid) were hurt/killed that day? Don't you have any sense of morals or duty?
@AbsoluteMonarchist I am wearing a t shirt, that says "Defend Freedom". Everything else in your statement (or questions) are based on a story that YOU'VE created out of your personal experiences and imagination. I am wearing a shirt that says "Defend Freedom" along with the website from where I bought it... that's all I have shared with you.
@strengthcamp - It also says 'join the resistance infowars.com' - An Alex Jones website that promotes 9/11 conspiracy theories. Not from my imagination. As I suspected you are a good guy who picked the wrong T-shirt. No offense meant but I feel obligated to speak out against this sort of thing. All the best.
Yo Elliot, you have an infective enthusiasm for teaching and you do it well. Many thanks for your clear explanation and postural remedies. I have a bad slouching problem, in addition to sitting at a computer all day, and have noticed my back become rounded over the years. I can use these stretches to correct that, thx.
This video came at the most perfect time. I have been dealing with shoulder pain right between my scapula for the past few weeks, an as soon as i started trying the stretchs the soreness eased up.
Yo Elliot! First up great vids man ive seen them all you look like you love what you do and care about the Physical and Mental state of your Clients/Subscribers

I've subscribed to a bunch of strength and fitness channels, and I can honestly say that I get the most excited over a new video from you. My current diet and training lifestyle is just a mishmash of things I've learned from you, and I feel confident taking only the bits and pieces that work for my body and crazy schedule because you really give all the info needed to get WHY things work. As someone with Cystic Fibroses, I'm in WAY better shape than a 27y/o should be. Thanks, dude.
very nice stretches.i had the same kind of problem so i took some preventitive measures before it got serious. I found a nice video by dr. evan oscar where he demonstrates how to do vertical cable rows to teach proper scapular placement. also, do you think it would be helpful to increase the strength in the back musculature by increasing motor unit recruitment for that athlete?
@inmymind801 yea, that exactly what we are doing with the "isolation" movements... getting the nervous system to recognize the muscles in order to support recruitment during "integrated" exercise / movement.
@PassionForWater there is an area in on my channel "homepage" where you can submit them... or just do a "video response" to any of my more recent videos so I can find it.

Just to explain why: because it's is very informative, precise, professional and not corny or hyped-up =D

But just my opinion I don't mean to be unrespectful or unthankful, just constructive.
Please keep up the good work like in this video.
