I love Sarah!! She writes about such meaningful things. Her music touches people to the very core! I can't believe this video only took $15 to make! That is the way that it should be, artists shouldn't be making videos that cost thousands of dollars, especially when they are singing about making a change and making a difference in the world. A lot of Artists are such hypocrites, but Sarah definitely isn't. You can tell that she actually means what she writes in her songs.
This brought tears to my eyes. Not only is Sarah beautiful, her music transformational, the message breaks my paradigm of hope open like a great big egg. Thank you so much!!!
What if everyone thought like this for at least one day! We have earth day for the environment maybe we need a day for all the humanity in need of help.
This world disgusts me. I hope 2012 does happen so people can start over again. This time without the wanting part of the brain in tact and the sharing part being the majority of the brain.
we are all part of a family... a 7 billion people family. We are all part of the human family, We must help our family members who need help because really, what is family for?
where i can i find the original video to the proverty stats?!?! (not the original video of the song, but the original video of video.... gawd i sound stupid i hope some1 out there gets what i mean!!!!)
canada spent 1 billion on a g20 meeting so all those greedy psychopath leaders can feel "safe" while the rest of the world works and bleeds for them. i think its called enslavement.
This song is really nice and became special for me...It gives an inspiration for those people who experiencing difficulties in life especially for those poor children that sill suffering from poverty...
I can't believe that this song came out in 2003! It seems like just yesterday that I first heard it and saw Sarah playing it for the first time. It's a moving song & more moving video.
Cant even milk a cow in Canada without a $100 license to certify its "clean" of contaminants. Oh theres another 20 jugs of milk. Dont have to look far from my doorstep in the 1st world and I see poverty.
All i have...yea, its a crap load more than anyone in the 3rd world. But some families I know, their fathers bust there balls all day working at a burger joint n can barely scrape by, does he want his boy being the poorest on the block? No. So hell buy him what he can. Thats reality. Do i want my kids to have a better life than me? Yes. All in what i do goes to their betterment, not a poor man in africa. And thats reality; here and now. Want to get angry? Blame inflation. $5 for a jugof milk.
@vaxinius I hear you. Everyone has their own private struggle, yet we should all endeavor to do what we can. Not more than we can, merely, something. It makes a difference - every bit of it. And it's all relative. Whether you're a million/billion/gadzillionaire considering bequeathing half your wealth to charity, or you're scraping the bottom of your pants pocket for change to drop in a Salvation Army kettle - you will have an impact on someone somewhere in this world.
@vaxinus I can't afford to give much money. I can spare a few hours here and there though volunteering, and to me time is as good as cash. We will all make our difference our own way. It doesn't have to be across the world, there are others in your community that don't have the luxury of that $5 jug of milk. I think Sarah's message is simply that we count our blessings, and if we have one or two left over - pass it on. I like to say; give enough so you feel it - but not so much that it hurts.
@darkhavenster those 75 people are desperate for attention. They know that no human being with a soul would not dislike this so they decide "o lets have people talk about us disliking the video hehehe".
I am the End. I am the place where all roads meet. I am the Change. I am What everyone deserves. I am what will bring light to the blind. I am the music to the deaf. I am the party that everyone is invited to. I am not sparse. I am free to use.
I am not god. I am not later. I am not to be ignored. I am not waste. I am not consuming. I am not just money.
I am in you. I am in your mother. I am also in you father. I am in your life. I am love.
This is amazing what she did. She saved so many places. I don't get why artists have to spend so much i mean what if all artists did this we could save so many peoples live
Fantastic lyrics and melody combined with a stirring video....how very Canadian. This song will touch your soul, but only if you allow it. Think about what we've become and how we can change the world together, because in the end we only have each other. Stand up and make a change world...before its too late!!
I watch this video at least once a year; usually at the begining - a phenominal example of "paying it forward" reminding us of how fortunate we are to not live in abject poverty like billions not millions.
To those that carry the balance of power on this earth; they really need to listen & hear the message-use your wealth & influence to create opportunities & sustainable change. I'm pretty sure they aren't but perhaps their children are & have a social conscience.
This is about "paying it forward". As citizens there are simple little everday things we can do to make a difference in the life of someone suffering whether it be emotional, physical or as depicted in the video those living in abject poverty.
It is also a strong message to those who carry the balance of power in this world; those with wealth and influence and encourages them to help to create real sustainable changes.
1:33 -16 hour day - that's a short day on a music video... oh sorry, we were talking about money. That $200 PA should get paid overtime, but alas, s/he will probably work 24 hours - In CA that would equal 8*1.0x=8hrs 4*1.5x=6h 12 x 2.0x=24h 8+6+24=38 equiv pay hrs. At the end of the day, that PA will have been abused and sleep deprived for $5.26/hour. In CA - the minimum wage is $8 / hour, yet the company that didn't get to make this video will do it again and again, and the PA will sign up.
As in donate money, though. I'm an underage minor, and I can't do anything. My parents can't either. That's why I'm planning on donating my money when I'm older.
Even something like being a smart consumer...buy "fair trade" items when you can...items like coffee and chocolate that the workers are paid a fair wage...cool that you are already wanting to help though!
It's amazing to think that the budget for a music video, which a record label will write off as promotional expense for the album, can affect so many lives.
This is a really great video. We have to write an essay on it in class and it really made me think about the things we take for granted and that the poor countries would die for. Its a very thoughtful video and I think every signer should at least make one of their videos themselves and send the money they had saved up for it to charity. That would help a lot of people... :)
Okay that's it, tomorrow I'm beginning again. I have too much to be so wasteful. That video made me cry and I've never been so happy to cry before. Change is going to start with me.
Problems like poverty famine,& war in other countries have left so many people in situations like you see in the video, The G20 countries by allowing immigriation to the correct people to their country can take a leading role in helping to bring a better life to people, while not risking the lives of our soldiers to fight in hostile territory. By being more tolerant and accepting towards new comers to your country you are making a big difference, and helping to save lives the world over : )
mother teresa once said, " not everyone can be great, but everyone can do things with great love" sarah is both. i love how she has done this video it really makes you think about the 2/3 of the world that is in poverty and shows you how much impact just a little sacrafice can make. like look at chocolate.. 90% of the worlds coco is tainted with slave labour and coffee beans are similar... im not saying dont eat it, just think about that.. anyway love and peace!!!
What a reality check . We don't realise how lucky we are , living in a 1st world country . It really stirs my conscience . Love Sarah and her work very much too . What a beautiful person .
The above was my last comment on Youtube. The reason for that is because there are so many obnoxious and stupid people on Youtube. I can't handle the swearing and the hating anymore. If you write a valid response to their comment, they come back cussing. I am tired of it. People fight about everything here. So I have chosen to just ignore them. You can't reason with everyone; they will always be someone who disagrees or is angered by what you say.
She gets paid for all her hard work from touring and from people buying her album. But she decided to make a cheap music video and use the money it would have costed, to help others. She didn't make the video to support her music more. She used her celebrity/well-known status so that people would view this video and learn how little it can cost to help those in third world/war-ridden countries.
How much did it cost you to have your music reviewed and copyrighted? how much did it cost for the lawyer to review your music? how much did BMG pay for the bottom end of this video? How much are you getting paid?
As wonderful as this all sounds, even you are in it for the money. Its unfortunate, but everyone looks out for themselves one way or another.
She was trying to make a point that we waste too much money on things we don't need when we could be giving it to someone who does need it! Believe it or not not everyone in hollywood is money driven a lot of people are TRYING to do the right thing but NO person in the world is not guilty of being money driven and they are also not guilty of being able to give more than they do.
You don't always have to give money to make a difference you can be poor as dirt and still donate your time to change other peoples lives. Like I said before not everyone is money driven.
this is how every music video should be. Good for you Sarah, you actually stand for something besides bringing about your own personal advancement. This rocks.
Because there will always be ignorant human beings. It does not change because people choose to accept that as a part of human nature. But we can change that if we try hard enough.
I like a variety of artists, but Sarah McLachlan is one of the few who cares about the world. To be honest, it scares me to watch this video. Kinda like I would rather ignore this problem then attempt to help, just because it's so much to handle. (Yes, I realize the lyrics explain this, but still.)
I don't even care if Sarah already did it. If I was a recording artist, getting big bucks to make a video, I'd do everything in my power to have that money towards humanitarian causes.
deep message ...kinda makes me feel ashamed about how much money I waste on really useless things. Funny how something so little can help in a big way, someone else on the other side of the globe.
It might have been more noble and peaceful to not make the video at all and to be quiet about it--but then making the video and commenting on the seeming injustice of it might be most effective. I did cry when I saw it, as it does shed light on a reality that I (and probably a lot of us) hardly grasp as I go about my day to day life.
Anyone who speaks the realistic truth gets a thumbs down for a negative comment but it's sad to say that it's delusional to think it's this easy. If it were, the world would not have these problems anymore. It's a good message but I think it's oversimplified just a bit.
"It's sad to say that it's delusional to think it's this easy. If it were, the world would not have these problems anymore."
I'm not sure I understand what you meant by this. Sounds to me like you're trying to self proclaim yourself as wise by being "realistic." Google search Charity Navigator, and you will find efficiency reviews of over 5000 United States charitable organizations. I think you'll find, at the very least, a handful of reputable organizations through which to make a difference.
Actually, no, that's not what I meant at all. If I was trying to proclaim myself as wise, then I would have just said. And I also didn't say that there were no organizations or any ways to make a difference. I just stated it's not easy, and anyone who points that out gets slapped with having a negative comment. There's no need to be an asshole about it.
I think people make it harder than It needs to be. I was trying to illustrate how easy it is to make a first step, by giving info about Charity Navigator. As far as me being and asshole, I guess I saw your discouraging post and got all fired up; I offer you my apologies.
The intent of my post was not to be discouraging. You are right, it is easy to take the first step, but unfortunately there are obstacles with this issue, and part of overcoming those obstacles is knowing what they are, however, when anyone tries to point that out, they are accused of being negative. I'm sorry my post got you fired up, with some of the other ridiculous comments on here I'm a bit surprised that this is the one that got you, but I apologize.
You're absolutely right! There are obstacles that need to be over come, ones that might take some time and dedication. But with an issue such as this, I believe, the work is well worth it!
Haha, yeah people do post stupid comments on here. Yours wasn' though and that's why I picked it. I think I was trying to be constructive, but was unfortunately also unnecessarily sarcastic. My sarcasm always gets the best of me. :) I did the same to someone else post; My apologizes my friends!
omg...I WISH PPL WOULD ACTUALLY ACT ON THIS....ITS SO SAD..STUFF LIKE THIS IS WHAT SHOULD BE IN THE MEDIA & NOT THOSE FILTHY RICH CRACKED OUT CELEBRITIES.
wake up lovesherry this is the media. Television is outdated, it is our parents media that is controlled by the government to dumb us down and influence our perception of the world. The internet is our generations way of spreading the word everywhere, it is our media, not entirely free of propoganda and brain washing but at least now we can get a second opinion. Saving the world is not that easy though. Getting the word out is only half the problem...
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
I don't mean to sound critical or anything but one of the reasons the video cost is low is because they have lifted third world footage without paying for copyright. Try doing the same in north America ? they'll will sue your ass.
This is the reality on this world many people live in a plenty economy, while other are starving. If we think carefully, nothing happen for coincidence as we know the poor countries have the main resources like Africa (Coal, copper etc), middle east(oil ), south america (mining, oil, wood indutry etc). Nevertheless, they are underdevoped countries right? what is the reality?. Imagine USA need like 3trillion American dollar for get solution, divide 3 trill/6.7 (billion) world population wow!
Very nice song, excellent video. I'm glad that in the video it says "dont worry we're not asking for money". Thats the one thing that makes this video valid. The truth is those expensive rates for people in LA are due to the cost of living in LA. It should not make them look evil, they are victoms of their own economies just like the poor in this video. We all make do with what we have, and some have more than others. Love and giving of yourself is what matters and we should try to.
I really dislike the sound of Sarah M's music, but I sure do love her idea to spend all the money differently. Yay Sarah!! My schools doing a 24 hour famine because of your video :) We're gonna try and build a school for an unfortunate country! HOpe we can do it!!
Beautiful video!!! Sarah should be respected for making a difference. And the people saying that Americans are "fat, selfish and ignorant" are clearly describing themselves. A truly intelligent person would never even consider stereotyping an entire country as being the same. People are different, they can't be grouped. How ignorant can you be to try to tell others that 305,529,237 people are all fat, selfish and ignorant. Thanks Sarah for the beautiful life lesson which we ALL clearly need!! <3

At first it appears noble. Soon I ask myself if helping a few is really helping at all. But we can't help everyone on earth, rather, we have to change our way of life that effects them. Consumerism has driven the foreign policies of modern countries towards imperialism, which in turn causes poverty in less modern countries. This video masks that reality, making it appear as if the solution to world hunger is to feed the hungry, rather than stop starving them.
You are partially right, feeding them is only solving half the problem. Teaching them how to feed themselves and fostering that system to let them grow and not take advantage of their cheap labour is where the solution lies. However you still need to feed those people first before you can teach them, so theycan survive. If you look at the video closely it doesn't only show that this money feeds them but that it also educates them, which is the very first step in making a self sustained country.
Wow all these negative comments coming from people who will never do anything as great as the work Sarah has done. You're all the egotistical ones, fighting about semantics when you could be supporting the video.
America doesn't do shit. The Norweigans, Finnish, Sweedes, and Danish donate a hell of a lot more than we do. Look at the numbers. Jan Egeland had to call us stingy after the tsunami hit South Asia before we donated anything tangible. America is a self-centered and egotistical society.
this just makes me so humble. we are so so grateful for all the things that we have, we must not envy, we must not boast. Take nothing for granted.

Sarah McLachlan is such a talented musician!

TotallyzAwkwardz 2 years ago 11
How much did it cost you to have your music reviewed and copyrighted? how much did it cost for the lawyer to review your music? how much did BMG pay for the bottom end of this video? How much are you getting paid?
As wonderful as this all sounds, even you are in it for the money. Its unfortunate, but everyone looks out for themselves one way or another.
tnt2sniper 2 years ago
She was trying to make a point that we waste too much money on things we don't need when we could be giving it to someone who does need it! Believe it or not not everyone in hollywood is money driven a lot of people are TRYING to do the right thing but NO person in the world is not guilty of being money driven and they are also not guilty of being able to give more than they do.

Sarah McLachlan, you are an incredible and wonderful woman, I am inspired by not only your voice but your passion for human rights.
If everyone who watches this video took to it the way I did, please never forget how unequal money and food is distributed in our world.

I like a variety of artists, but Sarah McLachlan is one of the few who cares about the world. To be honest, it scares me to watch this video. Kinda like I would rather ignore this problem then attempt to help, just because it's so much to handle. (Yes, I realize the lyrics explain this, but still.)
She's talent with a purpose, that's just amazing.

It's a good message but I think it's oversimplified just a bit.
snoopmickimick 2 years ago
"It's sad to say that it's delusional to think it's this easy. If it were, the world would not have these problems anymore."
I'm not sure I understand what you meant by this. Sounds to me like you're trying to self proclaim yourself as wise by being "realistic." Google search Charity Navigator, and you will find efficiency reviews of over 5000 United States charitable organizations. I think you'll find, at the very least, a handful of reputable organizations through which to make a difference.
nahawort 2 years ago
Actually, no, that's not what I meant at all. If I was trying to proclaim myself as wise, then I would have just said. And I also didn't say that there were no organizations or any ways to make a difference. I just stated it's not easy, and anyone who points that out gets slapped with having a negative comment. There's no need to be an asshole about it.
snoopmickimick 2 years ago
I think people make it harder than It needs to be. I was trying to illustrate how easy it is to make a first step, by giving info about Charity Navigator. As far as me being and asshole, I guess I saw your discouraging post and got all fired up; I offer you my apologies.
nahawort 2 years ago
The intent of my post was not to be discouraging. You are right, it is easy to take the first step, but unfortunately there are obstacles with this issue, and part of overcoming those obstacles is knowing what they are, however, when anyone tries to point that out, they are accused of being negative. I'm sorry my post got you fired up, with some of the other ridiculous comments on here I'm a bit surprised that this is the one that got you, but I apologize.
snoopmickimick 2 years ago
You're absolutely right! There are obstacles that need to be over come, ones that might take some time and dedication. But with an issue such as this, I believe, the work is well worth it!
Haha, yeah people do post stupid comments on here. Yours wasn' though and that's why I picked it. I think I was trying to be constructive, but was unfortunately also unnecessarily sarcastic. My sarcasm always gets the best of me. :) I did the same to someone else post; My apologizes my friends!

wake up lovesherry this is the media.

CherryPie291 2 years ago

Haha, but I definitely agree with you - it is ignorant to define an entire population in such a way.
Thank you Sarah for making a difference. This is a beautiful video. =)

Whats wrong with this picture?
At first it appears noble. Soon I ask myself if helping a few is really helping at all. But we can't help everyone on earth, rather, we have to change our way of life that effects them. Consumerism has driven the foreign policies of modern countries towards imperialism, which in turn causes poverty in less modern countries. This video masks that reality, making it appear as if the solution to world hunger is to feed the hungry, rather than stop starving them.
mehdiAbderezai 2 years ago
You are partially right, feeding them is only solving half the problem. Teaching them how to feed themselves and fostering that system to let them grow and not take advantage of their cheap labour is where the solution lies. However you still need to feed those people first before you can teach them, so theycan survive. If you look at the video closely it doesn't only show that this money feeds them but that it also educates them, which is the very first step in making a self sustained country.
Vovan07 2 years ago 4
It's funny how people will give negative feedback when exposed to the truth. Imperialism is definitely the right word.
thirteendays13 2 years ago 4
Wow all these negative comments coming from people who will never do anything as great as the work Sarah has done. You're all the egotistical ones, fighting about semantics when you could be supporting the video.

America doesn't do shit. The Norweigans, Finnish, Sweedes, and Danish donate a hell of a lot more than we do. Look at the numbers. Jan Egeland had to call us stingy after the tsunami hit South Asia before we donated anything tangible. America is a self-centered and egotistical society.
