Thanks, this is great! Gave me flashbacks to 'the clangers', and " it's Friday, it's 5 to 5, and it's crackerjack!" suddenly rolled across my mind! The 70's were a truely special time!
I wanna go back too...action man, eating spangles, sitting in front of the TV on a saturday morning waiting for the six million dollar man to start, commando comic books for 8p, airfix model kits for a pound...playschool, bagpuss, fingermouse, bod, grandstand with eddie waring commenting on the rugby, world of sport with dickie davis, starsky and hutch, citizen smith...POWER TO THE PEOPLE!!, some mothers do have em, morcambe and wise, the liver birds , tommy cooper, dick emery
just for those 5 minutes i went back in time and shed a tear. Im a grown man now, but i dont care! Theres something very special about being a 70's and early 80s child. Tarzy's, tree climbing, beck jumping, building go-carts with any scrap you could find. Huckleberry finn, grange hill, Why dont you! Bagpuss, the moomin trolls, that finger bobs guy scared the hell outa me but still loved it.
Treasured memories for us 70's and 80's kids. I wanna go back!!!
.....just makes me want to curl up on the sofa, with Mr Bear and a cup of hot milk, Mum's voice drifting through from the kitchen....rain pattering on the window, warm and safe, not a care in the world. Why do we have to grow up.
is there someone that remembered a mechanic/metallic owl in a tv series from the 70's (not Bubo in "Clas of the titans),and the movement was similar like in "The phoenix and the carpet" too??!!
Does anyone remember 'Ragtime'? It opened with a little cloth man playing frantically on a little stuffed cloth piano. It had Fred thingy in it as a presenter with a lady who was rather elegant. There was a kind of Humpty character (like a stuffed cushion) who used to dream in clouds above his head.. and there were lots of wooden spoon 'dolls'.
Thank you for posting this lovely little collection of some truly magical shows,
@squarefacehardhead I remember ragtime. With Fred, 'thingy', Harris. The Lady who accompanied him was one Maggie Henderson. The most famous song was one about, 'Ricky in his aeroplane.' The humpty character you remember was called, 'Bubble', as he was round. The spoons were named after food items, as I remember. There was also a rock 'n' roll character who looked like Jimi Hendrix.
Does anyone else remember 'Ragtime'? It opened with a little cloth man playing a little stuffed cloth piano. It had Fred thingy in it as a prsenter. funny to see how different UK kids shows were from American kids shows. Heard the wombles referenced several times in my favorite britcom "The Vicar of Dibley". Now I finally get it. LOL
Kids today are spoilt ,selfish demanding little brats, looking more like their dolls, the bratz. They need more shows like these. Bloody hell this generation needs some decent shows like the 70's
Anyone British and over the age of 30 will recognise most, if not all, of these programmes. Shown at either 1:45pm after Pebble Mill, (or the lunchtime news), or at 5:40pm just before the early Evening News on BBC1.
Interesting how mellow and often slow paced some of these shows were, lovingly made and sweet.Later we got things like thundercats and transformers which were more action and fighting.I liked them at the time but when you see them now there really preachy and patronizing with annoying morals. And they all ended with everyone laughing at a none joke.
Thank You for sharing this. In Los Angeles and Hollywood none of these were ever seen. The only British shows we had were Monty Python's Flying Circus, Fireball x5, Marty Feldman's Comedy Machine, Thunderbirds, The Avengers, Space 1999, and a few others. It is really nice to see Soviet, French, German, and Chinese programming as well from time to time - So much Japanese influence on animation in United States T.V. nowadays.
Wonderful shows..all of them! Actually these shows were seen here in the United States, as well. Bagpuss was the one I loved most of all. Thank you for posting this!
'Tear in my eye yet?' YES! Bagpuss was the one that did it! Makes me laugh too, I'm a child of the 70s and 80s, but a teen of the 90s and know for sure that at least two of those theme tunes were made into rave tunes, blew my whistle to them a good few times! Aww, 70s, 80,s and 90s, wonderful decades... what went wrong!!? :((
Great job. Unfortunately, I missed these shows. Born in 1966 in Luton, Beds. Moved to Canada in 1973. Grew up with the North American tv diet. But I do remember the Flaxton Boys and The Pursuaders. One comment mentioned Simon in the Land of Chalk Drawings. I watched that here in Canada too.
Omg, I used to love all of these children's programs, brings back such happy memories. I wish they would bring these back on tele now as they're calming, happy and full of fun. Unlike today's cartoons. Thanku for uploading.x
Being born (1965) and raised in the United States I have no idea what I just watched....it is great that no matter where we grew up and what we grew up with everyone has special memories of their childhood and their favorite shows!

@jakobgrimminger Life was better then. To me, from the mid 50s to the early 80s was a great time to be American. Yes, we still had war and troubles but, the 70's especially, seem like a great time in history. If we could reverse time I'd go back to either the 60's or the mid 1800's. :)
Oh these poor kids today - perhaps I'm biased, but back then it was really about being a kid... nowadays it's violent X-Box games and Wii! I think we had it much better! :)
For some reason I suddenly remembered 'Bagpuss' today. I'm 37 so that's a few years since I last thought of it. Thanks for this - and all the other memories! Where's Andy Pandy though??!
those were the days when i would go round e mates houses and the mums would get out the dilute orang that had the faintest taste ever .quality show u could actually watch and undertstand not like now ...bring this quality back..
I was born in the 80s but it doesn't matter what year you are born in as long as you can see what quality is. All those shows are just so lovely and BOY listen to those themes. Aren't they just beautiful? Magic Roundabout is still something I can't get out of my head and I'm sorry to say that but I LOVE the Bagpuss intro - I think it's the best about every episode :-P
@MarkP0rter I was born in 1997 and yet I still got the wonderful oportunity to watch things like The wombles, Ivor the engine and Trumptons! but all of those videos a broken now :(
fantastic, sorry to see you omitted the "godfather" of that era ....the undisputed champion of "kids tv" the one the only mr. hartley hare fighting out of the pipkins corner. a genius in brown "fabric"!
I'm from The United States. I've never heard of most of these shows (Except I HAVE heard of The Wombles), but I find these to be very fascinating. It seems like they would have been much better than the glut of forgetable, mindless, formulatic cartoons that flooded the US airways in '70's.
I remember Dr Who being criticised for being increasingly violent in the 1970s - particularly a scene involving the Doctor being almost drowned by an attacker. And The Tomorrow People used to terrify me.
Yup, these were all shown on the BBC during the 70's. Although, there was plenty of American programmes shown, too. I guess there must have been a few British ones shown in the States, but, unfortunately, none which featured here.
There were also many American children's TV programmes shown here as well. I can add a couple more - The Pink Panther, Banana Splits, The Monkees (60's I think?) but who or what was 'Fat Albert'?
Even if I am technically a child of the 80's I love all of those especially "BAGPUSS!!" MOST ADORABLE CAT IN THE WHOLE WIDE WORLD !!!and much tearing up throughout the whole thing ! thnk u
I am very glad and feel extremely privileged to have grown up in England during this time. The programmes for children were far superior to anything they had on in the States. What about Jackanory, Blue Peter, Simon (in the land of chalk dawing) and of course my favorite of all time Rupert the Bear. I would go crazy to see him!!
Simon in the Land of Chalk Drawings used to come on in the States during Captain Kangaroo! I watched it as a child and for years the song was stuck in my head until I found it again on here! I used to teach a child named Simon and I would sing the song to him almost daily
Yes, very lovely and kind of sad to see all these things especially if you dont live in the UK anymore. Can anyone tell me if they remember a tv programme on in the day that i thionk was called "The magic Bow" or something like that.. the theme music was this beautiful waltz which i'm trying to track down.
I've lived in New York for the past 18 years, and every so often, think about all the things I miss about England ( born and bred in North Yorkshire ). This most definitely brought a tear to my eye!!!
Ha! Wherever did you get all these clips Northallerton?? Do you have any 'Barnaby the Bear' ??? I'm from Scarborough! Bet you went there on holiday , or at least for a day trip, and ride on the donkeys !!!
They bring a tear to my eye too. It's the innocence in society and in ourselves we grieve, that these programmes remind us of when we were small and full of wonder at the world. We all recognise the awful changes that have happened in the world, but it's more than this. It's something we've lost in ourselves; a sense of magic about being alive that our parents saw and loved in us. That's why it's such a joy to return there in watching these clips.
yes i totally agree with you... i personally find myself argueing with everybody. I find everyones lack of sensitivity towards each other, the enviroment and animals negatively breathtaking.
It could be a stage in humanity's development. Once a critical mass of people see the reasons for it, and they become more widely known, it will reverse itself. These things are but a symptom of something far deeper; an outward expression of something seriously wrong with the way we exist as humans.
Some of us love good things and we have to be the dominant force in the world.
We're starting to realise on many levels, the old ways are better, from farming to education and morals. I think we'll see a return to this golden age of innocence-in our lifetime. I think we'll see some changes for the better..and soon.
there is deffinetly a tear in my eye i havnt seen mr.benn since i was maybe three i didnt even remember it but as soon as i saw it loads of memories flooded back thank you because lately i have been wondering where did my child hood go it was infront of the t.v and you helped me find it thnk u i can rember watchin some of these in my bugie as a todler (i nver sat stil and my mum was afraid i wud sumtin dangerous while she wsnt there, i was dnagerous as a child i split my head open when i was 2!)
oh god i feel so old now watching these. I remember it was such a happy and innocent time before you grew up and life turned crap. I think we were more innocent and happier than the kids today. Thanks for the posting.
I won't say all 70s programs were good - there was a LOT of rubbish on then as there is now, but I can't fault the clips chosen. They were some of the better shows of the era, with strong scripts for the age bracket they were aimed at, expecting - and getting - focussed attention and a memory for details.
totally spot-on! The memories came roaring back :*) always remember trying to make sure Igot home from work in time to see most of these when they used to be on just before the news, or if you were ever off during the week for any reason, trying to make sure that you never went anywhere un the afternoon before you'd had a chance to watch one of these, real classic stuff, thank you for posting (Sughs Deeply and drifts off into a nostalgic haze) lol
beautifully done and ,yes one does take a moment to think about how innocent those times were...if only we could go back to those 'no worries' times...
B 1967.The 70s were certainly not a 'no worries' time for me.I was a shy child with divorced parents, living in poverty with a sick mother & an elder sibling with chronic bulimia in an Aus that had yet to grow up & become the diverse multicultural place it is today. But it was the UK kids tv that gave me an escape into humour and fantasy & made me realise noone can take your inner life away from u.Bagpuss,Basil Brush, the Goodies,Magic Roundabout,Bill & Ben-all have a special place in my heart.
wat a fab compilation but wheres mary, mungo and midge, hectors house and the clangers with button moon and rupert the bear lol they don.t make em like they used to ???????
What can I say that has not been said? It is truly amazing what emotions are evoked from viewing these childhood treasures and reading the other members comments. Thankyou for posting this video.
it isnt just me, i reckon we had the best childrens tv to grow up with, fantastic memories, oh boy do i feel old, and a little sad, as my own kids would watch these and say how old fashioned they are.
things were better in those days in my opinion, watching these really brings it home to you that we are never going to be young again...so cheer up coz weve got death to look forward to..and judging by the state of the world it will be a blessing by the time were ready to go forever..happy days peeps xx

Must be a British thing ... I didn't recognize any of it. Where's Sesame Street and Fat Albert? Or the Flintsones, Jetsons, Scooby Doo, etc?
Kerkopes 2 years ago
Yup, these were all shown on the BBC during the 70's. Although, there was plenty of American programmes shown, too. I guess there must have been a few British ones shown in the States, but, unfortunately, none which featured here.
JFredUK 2 years ago
Yes, these are the British shows, sorry! We did have the shows you mention; well all except Fat Albert, I think.
Most British 30-somethings look back and remember the shows in this film :o)
smee1972 2 years ago
There were also many American children's TV programmes shown here as well. I can add a couple more - The Pink Panther, Banana Splits, The Monkees (60's I think?) but who or what was 'Fat Albert'?
carmel1956 2 years ago
Fat Albert was a cartoon from the 70's-80's that was hosted by Bill Cosby. Haaba fabba Albert!

I am very glad and feel extremely privileged to have grown up in England during this time. The programmes for children were far superior to anything they had on in the States. What about Jackanory, Blue Peter, Simon (in the land of chalk dawing) and of course my favorite of all time Rupert the Bear. I would go crazy to see him!!
ttarget 2 years ago 11
No one remembers Simon in the land of chalk drawing, it was my favorite!!
KittykatColorado 2 years ago
Simon in the Land of Chalk Drawings used to come on in the States during Captain Kangaroo! I watched it as a child and for years the song was stuck in my head until I found it again on here! I used to teach a child named Simon and I would sing the song to him almost daily

Yes, very lovely and kind of sad to see all these things especially if you dont live in the UK anymore. Can anyone tell me if they remember a tv programme on in the day that i thionk was called "The magic Bow" or something like that.. the theme music was this beautiful waltz which i'm trying to track down.
thanks for this lovely sentimental video.

Pulsar205 3 years ago 3
yes i totally agree with you... i personally find myself argueing with everybody. I find everyones lack of sensitivity towards each other, the enviroment and animals negatively breathtaking.
joannamichelle72 2 years ago 2
It could be a stage in humanity's development. Once a critical mass of people see the reasons for it, and they become more widely known, it will reverse itself. These things are but a symptom of something far deeper; an outward expression of something seriously wrong with the way we exist as humans.
Some of us love good things and we have to be the dominant force in the world.

I remember the 70's for innocence and being allowed to be a kid. Not like now...what will happen in another 30 years??
jadenfyfe 3 years ago
We're starting to realise on many levels, the old ways are better, from farming to education and morals. I think we'll see a return to this golden age of innocence-in our lifetime. I think we'll see some changes for the better..and soon.

The memories came roaring back :*) always remember trying to make sure Igot home from work in time to see most of these when they used to be on just before the news, or if you were ever off during the week for any reason, trying to make sure that you never went anywhere un the afternoon before you'd had a chance to watch one of these, real classic stuff, thank you for posting (Sughs Deeply and drifts off into a nostalgic haze) lol

beautifully done and ,yes one does take a moment to think about how innocent those times were...if only we could go back to those 'no worries' times...
gfrkiss 3 years ago
B 1967.The 70s were certainly not a 'no worries' time for me.I was a shy child with divorced parents, living in poverty with a sick mother & an elder sibling with chronic bulimia in an Aus that had yet to grow up & become the diverse multicultural place it is today. But it was the UK kids tv that gave me an escape into humour and fantasy & made me realise noone can take your inner life away from u.Bagpuss,Basil Brush, the Goodies,Magic Roundabout,Bill & Ben-all have a special place in my heart.
