@pasadena333 Not exactly the best "at the moment" in a few of those events. After the Taper for Worlds, and the rest of August to kind of chill and recover. As of September to now, Phelps's 200 free, 200 IM, 100 Back,100 fly (of course the fly) are faster than Lochte's. And mind that Phelps being the current world record holder isn't swimming the 400 IM (in the Olympics that is). Matt Grevers is also faster right now in the 200 back by over 2 seconds :|

@pasadena333 The best on most official world championships? Phelps earned 4 gold in Shanghai, 5 in Rome, 7 in Melbourne, 5 in Montreal, 4 in Barcelona, and 1 in Fukuoka . . . Phelps also has 3 WR in LCM, where there time's are actually going to matter. that's over 2X as many WC golds. Not to mention the 16 Olympic medals to Lochtes 6. He also has a higher overall % of gold medals. Pretty sure you're the one with silly comments here. I love Lochte, but he's not to par with Phelps in shape.

lochte phelps and le clos do not have great freestyles compared to yanick angel paul biedermann and ian thorpe the reason why they are so amazing at this distance is because if this was a 100 there underwaters would not help thema s much if it was a 400 there underwater would start to fade around 300 and the domniatn distance and freestylers would take over that why this 200 distance is such a good distance for lochte and phelps its not a sprint and its not a distance race.

Beiderman is a great swimmer and has been up in the top 6 for many years (200Fr) but it is really really obvious that the world record really came out of that suit...Not to beat up on a great swimmer...Many world records came out of that poly suit. Beiderman mastered swimming with in within half a year of Beijing.

my point is that Phelps > Beiderman at the Worlds 2011. It wasn't about who won, overall. It is clear that Phelps could be first (over Lochte/Beiderman) had he been training consistently since Beijing--he admitted this in an interview. Credit to Beiderman for dropping so much time since 2008.

I"m fully aware Phelps is the better swimmer, but Biedermann is not "nothing without the suit". He's still a great swimmer, anybody who can beat phelps at a championships meet can consider themselves a great swimmer. I don't think Biedermann deserves the world records he broke over Phelps or Thorpe, but he's stil a great swimmer.

@TheBradleyC4 Phelps does not deserve his 200 free WR either. It was also done with a faster suit which people seem to forget since Phelps is the golden boy. Thorpe has done the fastest ever normal suit 200 free ever to date.

Biedermann would have also beaten Phelps in the 200 free in 2009 without the suit. He nearly beat him at the 2011 Worlds and beat him on the relay lead off despite being in much worse shape than 2009.

@serenakicksass I totally agree with you, about Biedermann, except about 2009. Biederman had nice technique for sure, but you have to keep in mind, he is a really big guy, and that body suit helped him especially to get faster, so it would have been much closer had he only been in a laser, tough to call.

And again, close call with Phelps and Thorpe, but Phelps in fact does have the fastest textile 200 freestyle, after Thorpe retired, Melbourne World Champs 2007, he raced in an FS2 body.

So the myth that Phelps could only be beaten in that event by a faster suit was proven just that, a myth. At the Beijing Olympics Phelps had a faster suit than many of his competitors but nobody said anything. Funny that, LOL!
