It was winter, 1969,, doing LSD when I heard this song. I was 17 almost 18. 38 years or more has passed since I heard this last. It hurts my heart to hear it. I guess because it reminds me of when I was indestructible, young and innocent. Now, I'm just old.......
@coolingwater9111 I wasn't doing LSD, but I was the exact same age, and this song encapsulates so much of what we all felt and did. You are so right - we were indestructible, young and romantic. This song reminds me of loves found and lost in my NYC youth. Perfection. (aka elsewhere @jayelgee1)
@shovel79jon ...Yes, I also thought and felt that this clip complements the song lyrics. Kinda strange thing, but after hearing this music, PBS had a special on the 1935 dust bowl (in black and white), with many of the same sad faces seen here. wow.
I love this not only because it's a Brilliant ballad by marty balin, but because it expouses the passion that you see to something or someone that fills that something that you are looking for. I listened to this on headphones and nicely stoned when I was hiking at point reyes station in marin county at dusk. Peace!
This song is featured in a movie, "Flashback." It stars Dennis Hopper, Kiefer Sutherland and an exquisite, miraculous Carol Kane. If you remember the 60's, you gotta see this film!
Man, haven't heard this in a year or so and whooosh, I am back in San Francisco in the Haight and I'm looking out a window waiting for that one special girl who could break my heart with just a look. And she did. Far too many times. And when we finally broke up, I always throught there was one more chance we deserved. And this song haunts me to this day.
@oitsbarb55 Nothing to understand really. You either like it or you don't. If it doesn't work for you and you like the tune, just look away! It's not supposed to be a literal interpretation of the lyrics. Thanks for looking.
@mrdelmar I have to say when I first saw it,I didnt get it, I kinda felt shallow about my comment and how I felt..But I watched again and I got it..felt it,it really is good!
this is an obscure ballad on Surrealistic Pillow, album and song from my youth, what a great pairing of video and music except they lyrics point to a romantic loss where the video points to longing for the father figure. The black and white medium and cold landscape connect perfectly
i remeber being in oregon college in 1971 at a party with steve prefontaine he loved this song years later i watched the film about him called without limits and they played this in it it bought back fantasic memories r.i.p pre
I first heard this song from the movie 'Flashback' with Kiether Sutherland and dennis hopper. Its a great song. I only just found out who sung the song. Brillant.
someone told you that before, but you choose a footage that fits quite well with the flavour of lost love and childish melancholy, at least i feel so..thanks
someone told you that before, but you choose a footage that fits quite well with the flavour of lost love and childish melancholy, at least i feel so..thanks
Such an evocative, moody and introspective song with Marty's poignant vocals, gentle Grace recorder, and Jorma fingerpicking guitar. Got me then, gets me now...thanks.
I bought Surrealistic Pillow so that I could always hear White Rabbit and Somebody To Love because I loved Grace Slick's passion as a vocalist. Then, as I made my way through the record, I came across this haunting ballad sung by Marty Balin. At one level it's a sparse dirge much like a Gillian Welch song, but it's got such a quiet emotional power. Great "found" clip too!
This "gem" by the Airplane is timeless!Has there ever been a better song that captures the listener from the start and proceeds to touch your soul for 5:23? This remarkable song is FLAWLESS! Raw feeling and emotion immortalized! This tune should be mandatory listening to anyone who wants to capture, for a brief moment anyway, what it felt like to be alive in the "summer of love." TY!
An incredibly evocative, and beautiful song. I was only 2 when it was released, but my parents had the album, and participated in the zeitgeist, whatever that means. where is the video clip from? Does anyone know?
That film clip was a really good choice. The melancholy facial expressions, the old farm, church, and schoolhouse scenes from a bygone era, reminded me of the lives of our grandparents and great grandparents. People who we always thought would be there, but no longer are.
Thanks you. This maybe the best therapy my aching soul could have at this moment. Maybe it was just something I made up for fun. I can't believe that. It was real.
Thank God, I'm not alone... thanks for letting me know!

Beautifull, the video works like magic with the song, so bittersweet and evocative. But be carefull the lyrics are wrong, it's:
"You came to stay and live my way,
Scatter my love like leaves in the wind.
You always say that you won't go away,
But I know what it always has been,
It always has been" ex...
makes more sense like this no? :-) Bye!

The summer had inhaled and held its breath too long
The winter looked the same, as if it never had gone
And through an open window where no curtain hung
I saw you, I saw you, comin' back to me
One begins to read between the pages of a book
The shape of sleepy music, and suddenly you're hooked
Through the rain upon the trees, that kisses on the run
I saw you, I saw you, comin' back to me
