This is not a BD-5J, even if it is based on one - the wing is much sturdier, professionally built, like the one seen in a James Bond movie, Thus not cheap at all, but fuel consumption is very low, being a jet.

The engine costs an arm and a leg, too!

The display pilot that flew his BD-5J-alike in the James Bond movie, who later was killed in an unrelated accident, pointed out, several times on his site, that the plane he used for displays and in the film definitely wasn't anything like a normal kit-built BD-5J, as the wing was quite different in airfoil and design, and was milled, not pop-riveted, as the kit wing is!

So higher specs all through, a bit like Spitfire-lookalikes very seldom has a Merlin engine.

I guess you could argue that it wasn't a "true BD5" because of some wing mods, but it is still a BD5 variant. Remember, this is an experimental aircraft. Owners make all sorts of changes or mods to thier aircraft. I still contend that it is still well within the BD5 family.

@Tord55 Corky Fornof flew Bishop's BD5 for trhe Bond movie. The BD5 was never a kit. Bishop still flies the only remaining BD5 here in Arizona (fly in community outside Phx) I'm in the Tucson area. The kit aircraft was the BD10. The only other remaining BD5 sits without an engine in a museum.

@lotsofPower1  I'm not sure if you are referring to thne BD5 or the BD10. Bishop's BD5 is not to far from me here (I live in Arizona) Bud Light now has a couple of the BD5s they take to airshows. They used to Winter them here in Marana (about 3 miles from me). There have been a few BD10 kits sold but I think ZERO are in flyable condition. I do not think there are any BD5s in kit form other than the ones flown by Buwesiser.

Wow. Ya know, if you look it up, the BD-J5 isn't that expensive for a jet. Is it more more expensive than a prop plane of comparable size? OH YEAH. You don't buy one of these just to travel or sightsee in. I'd love to own one. Too bad they're not really produced anymore. They have a top speed of about 325 miles per hour and weigh about 350 lbs., if I remember right. Light but fast and maneuverable.

The BD5 was a low-energy design and until now state of the art.

The Travel Speed was adopted to his turbine but there were combustion-Motors for

the BD5 with Propeller and a lower Airspeed and larger wings.

Everthing you want can be in the Air.

But this Design is (was) very Energy efficient.

If my memory serves correctly, this flight was just a few minutes before Jack Rosamond crashed in his F-86. That was a real tragedy, and I wouldn't have expected to see this demo on the internet.

Ahh. I see. Actually, I don't remember much about the plane, other than it had checkers (not uncommon, I know), possibly yellow and black on the tail.

If it was on static display that day, I may have pictures. I'll have to have a look.

well i guess the replacement is the spy satellites. no need to fly a jet over enemy lines when theres spy satellites flying over a few times a day.

they even have recievers up there that can pickup cellphone signals.

as for its possible use as a bomber i think missiles are accurate and fast enough to be launched from ground. im not sure what good the sr71 would do these days, or any replacement with the same role.

As far as I know Microturbo in November 2008 asked the certification authorities to revoke the certification approval for its TRS 18-series miniature turbojets which in the most recent versions produce 325 lbt thrust. The company did not return a request for additional information as to why it exited the market. However, I wonder if the venerable BD-5J can be fitted with the also small První Brnenská Strojírna (PBS) TJ-100-A which produce 247 lbf thrust.

The reason it isn't as wide spread as you might think is there aren't that many kits around. The kits take an expert builder. It isn't cheap as well. My father knew the creator of this aircraft and the plane flies like a dream. It has a high wing loading so landing is interesting but its a strong airplane. If you want a high perfofmance kit plane that's strong and reliable get a Glasair III. Then throw a Turbine or 300 horse motor in it and have fun. It isn't a jet though...:(

Probably because it requires a lot of construction skill to properly build and is dangerous if you aren't careful in the initial build process i.e. you try to fly it before you are sure its safe.

My understanding is that it also is a handful to fly, even in the propeller version. Only a handful of the jet versions were ever built and flown. It is neither a construction project for the first time builder, nor is it for the first-time pilot.

I have a friend who has gotten ahold of the kit plans and is building two of them right now in his hangar. The reason the landing gear is so fast is because it's operated completely by hand using a simple lever. They're pretty sweet machines!

Friend of mine has 3 of these planes, one with Honda/turbo setup, he is waiting on good weather to test flight two of the planes. None are jets though, remember the 007 movie with the Bede!

Extend the fuselage a foot, wingspan a 2 foot total (to handle the extra weight), then add about 300 pounds more fuel and you have seriously fast little jet that'll go from point a to point b, around 500 miles.
