Nice CD player, but it's far from it's full potential unless you apply a few cheap mods, which will take this player to the upper class.
I have a Tesla MC902 (a rebadged Philips CD460 with CDM2/29), in which I changed the DAC to a single crown 1541A S1, made it non-oversampling and replaced the entire analogue out section with a custom schematic with one JFET per channel as the only active component in the signal path. To my ears, it sounds much better than any stock Philips unit I ever heard.
I bought one of these babies and had it modded by Soloist Audio for another $1000
and now its broken thanks for FED EX and Atlas Audio....I sent it in for repair and they did a shitty wrap job after the second time I sent back to them after the first repair only lasted 2 week ends.
Everyone, be careful of Atlas Audio.....love the player "if" they ever send it back to me.
Ive a NAD 5000 which has incredible sound quality would give that phillips a run for its money. I wouldnt say that was the king of vintage players though, had a good transport and laser system but there were better.
um no your wrong me friend that is an over blown unit with too many gimmicks and not enough focus on sound quality. The NADs are regarded as fine machines. The 5200 nad is beautifully built, simple features and a staggering good error correction circuit. The sound is perfect. Beats a £700 sony unit i had. Phillips did make some good machines i agree but this is not the best cd player in the world!!
I like the my modded Philips CD-80 a little better then the 880.. Just suits my taste better.
Forget about the N.A.D. stuff, not even close..

most of my cd players are philips dac chip based. the mechanism is strong & pack with goodies. this cd 880 is definitely a keeper..

What is really impressive to me about this video, is the sound quality of your camera! It picks up nicely on the audio
