I saw a documentary recently about Steve McQueen , is included on the double dvd version of Bullit, where his first wife sais that Steve McQueen didn't want the role. She decided to tell him that he finally lost the role and already other actors reading the script! He changed his mind and got in contact with the director.
I have that same DVD. Neile McQueen told her hubby during breakfast that Director Norm Jewison was going to cast either Rock Hudson or Sean Connery for the part and it was too bad he wasn't getting it which made McQueen upset. That's when he begged, pleaded, cussed and everything else to get the role.

@jemimakahn I think I hear you... it's true that not everybody was gay. But it's also true that a lot of people in Hollywood were (and are) gay and this aspect of their ilfe was (and is) usually carefully hidden from the public. I don't think McQueen was gay, or even necessarily bi, but he found his way into many adventures along the road to becoming a star and encountered a lot of different kinds of people. And many straight men have experiences they're not eager to talk openly about later.

The chess scene in this movie is timeless. Ah, the original Tommy Crown movie...does it get any better? Sorry Pierce. Question for you movie buffs...Wouldn't Daniel Craig have been a better fit for a remake of this flick over Brosnan? Ya know...truer to the original spirit of Thomas Crown? Just like Craig was truer to the original interpretation of Ian Fleming's James Bond.

Good point. BUT, the remake was in 1998-99. Craig was then barely 30 (born 1968). It wouldn't have worked. I agree Craig would be great for the role today since he looks like and has same mannerisms as McQueen.
Speaking of James Bond, Director Norman Jewison tried to get Sean Connery to play Thos. Crown before McQueen literally begged him for the role. BTW, who is the actor who appeared in a Law & Order episode (played a former soldier killing a Arab) who is a dead-ringer for McQueen?

I saw a documentary recently about Steve McQueen , is included on the double dvd version of Bullit, where his first wife sais that Steve McQueen didn't want the role. She decided to tell him that he finally lost the role and already other actors reading the script! He changed his mind and got in contact with the director.

Neile McQueen told her hubby during breakfast that Director Norm Jewison was going to cast either Rock Hudson or Sean Connery for the part and it was too bad he wasn't getting it which made McQueen upset. I read that Burt Lancaster was "bi" but McQueen? Hard to believe and I've done a lot of research on McQueen. All the other charges are true; wife-beater, cocaine user, cigarette smoker but he died from mesothelioma which is usually caused by asbestos exposure, not tobacco smoking. He was not skinny in the late 70's.

@jemimakahn I think I hear you... it's true that not everybody was gay. But it's also true that a lot of people in Hollywood were (and are) gay and this aspect of their ilfe was (and is) usually carefully hidden from the public. I don't think McQueen was gay, or even necessarily bi, but he found his way into many adventures along the road to becoming a star and encountered a lot of different kinds of people. And many straight men have experiences they're not eager to talk openly about later.
