Just a couple of tips here, Big Fire Big water when you have a structure thats well involed pull a couple of 2.5s off the truck the 1 3/4 line aint going to do much, 2nd when you guys go up on the roof to do ventilation make sure you take an ax and sound the roof by tapping the roof to check for week spots, i hate hearing stories of fire fighters falling through roofs because they didn't check for weeks spots, Stay safe guys
First of all, great video! But I feel that a comment should be made on the PPE. Seriously if you don't want to have cancer in 20 years go on air for goodness sake. You're not impressing anyone by "eating smoke". On a lighter note I thought it was funny that guys who weren't even on air were running around with their BA's on. Fighting fire is hard enough, you might as well ditch the BA while doing overhaul. Keep up the good work and stay safe!
kicking major ass in the fire dept. means pulling out of the station quickly getting on scene quickly but in a safe manner and o shit there goes my tones
I can disagree with the bigger lines in a fire that is this involved, what are you saving? So to make your water go farther its better to us the 1 3/4 plus its easier to move, Plus i know our dept has alot more 1 3/4 line then bigger line. Thats what i think.
bc their fire house is probably 25 miles away from civilization and the house burns down by the time they get there. nobodys fault. keep up the good work guys!
@kodythepimp01 you'll come to learn that NFPA stands for "Not For Practical Applications". lots of NFPA standards are pretty dumb if you look at it from the front lines.
i cannot believe that those guys are on the roof look at the smoke coming form the tiles and around the gutter its telling u that the roof cavity is on fire so easy to full through straight into the fire below but different country different tatics does againts all my training
I am glad everyone made it out ok and the Firefighters too. I was getting concerned when I heard the evacuation horn on the truck go off and there were firefighters on the roof. Thanks for sharing!
Everyone was o.k. The three horn blasts actually means water is coming, i.e. the hydrant is tapped. It did get a little nerve racking there on that roof, even for me! Thanks for the comment
Freakin Safety Sallys, we are just doin what we can with what we have. We must be doin something right, rarely do we injure firefighters, and we don't make parkin lots often !! Its different here than the rest of the world, as far as what we have, trust me!! Not braggin, just stating facts, over 7000 fire calls a year, not including EMS runs in 56 sq. miles. Average 500 working structure fires per year!! Again, must be doin somethin right !!
I could not agree more and try to stick-up as much as humanly possible. Have to remember, there are a lot of people watching these videos who only see 2-3 fires a year and have the equipment they need. Oh, saw won't cut, buy a case of blades. What Engine 9 leaks, fix the seal now. If they only knew how it was. You already know how I feel, and stand by you guys 110%. May see you tonight, but not looking good. Stay safe Squad 2
I asked and a 2.5 was used, in Gary the horn signifies water is on it's way, The roof I would have avoided, and the garage didn't have an unburned side. This was the only way they could actually attack the fire. The fire from the garage extended to the house causing the heavy fire conditions throughout.
The fire started in the garage and an explosion got the homeowner moving, Engine 12 which was first on scene had a little wait for assistance so they pulled the line hoping to get the fire in check. GFD is quite aggressive and they like to get in there. As far as I know, the cause was still under investigation. Sorry for the delay in the reply and thanks for the comment
God I hope so, I want significant changes just as much as you guys. It would kill me if someone got hurt because of under staffing. The incident with Friday scared the shit out of me. If I can do anything for you guys I am always here and will do what I can
i really would not say there were kicking ass...if they were using there head..they would have pulled a 2 1/2 or portable deck gun and got a good knock down...not with an interior 1/12 hand line like they are doing ! not to smart !
gary does there damn best in fighting fires. i'm living proof sincerly, former gary resident from '74 to 2000. thanks guys for hard workmanship, G.F.D. rocks for life!!!!
To 200chief, you are blocked and can not post to my videos any longer. And you are wrong asshole, I am 32 and volunteered for 7 of them. So just as I though, you have to be right or so you think. Good day
Just what would I learn that is so great if I did indeed "come to Gary and fight a Gary fire"? I promise you houses burn every day in other places but Gary.
I promise that 99% of veiwers would translate 2 sets of 4 horn blasts from 2 different trucks as evacuation signals. And you can say what you want, but being on the roof without being on SCBA for this fire was stupid. What was gained?
And as far as risk vs benifit, I'll put life preservation over property preservation EVERY CALL.
I must agree, until I read these comments I completely thought those horn blasts were evacuation tones. NOTE, NOTE, NON GARY FD EXPERT SAYING THIS-but it would seem to be more logical to use the radios to ask for water...thats why we have fire ground channels. Plus at a large fire, when you have multiple engines all hitting hydrants as they arrive...how can you be sure its your engineer thats ready for water?
Yes you are correct it would be logical to use the radios for asking for water but when you work in a city that only provides one radio per rig you have to improvise. That is why we use the horn method; every Engine Co in the city has a different signal. It might sound confusing form the observers but we know what were doing. Also, this was not a large incident it was only a single family house fire. They probably used one hydrant maybe two.
Sounds like you guys have some interdepartmental issues with policy that are no fault of the guys on the trucks. Thats a shame. It will probably take someone getting killed to bring a change.
after reading you have been staffed with 3 engines and 1 truck for the whole tour, i really wish you luck. wouldnt be there for all the tea in china (no offence)
to gtrider245 thier was a 2-1/2 pulled on this fire awalk around and a size up. the horns 3 times is for the hydrant man to sent water. So if you don't know how things are done in gary it's wise not to say anyting at all
A few things. Upon the arrival of the first engine, there is no walkaround, no sizeup. They just begin fire attack, with a line that is way undersized for this fire. Pulling the 1 3/4" on this fire was a waste of time and a waste of water. The roof ops without airpacks is bad enough, but staying on the roof after the horns go off is even worse.
Wow always somebody that reads all the books and watches all the fire videos he can so he can be the best of the best. But when you really do it for a living sometimes, well all the time its never like it should be. When you get to the point in your career when you can say we average a fire everyday then you will notice what I am talking about. Till then keep those training videos in your favorites and just imagine what it must be like.

A couple of things...First - where were the big lines? big fire=big water It looked like everything was 1 3/4 lines.
Second - I thought you were supposed to cut the vent hole over the fire area. But, if the entire attic space is lit ......
Third - What the h#@& was that man doing on that roof with no SCBA??
Sometimes we have bad days....lets not make them worse.

Three rapid blasts is for water, four long blasts is for evacuation. Good question though, thanks for the comment

@mabas21 i thought three blasts are for evac... i thought that was an NFPA standard

@kodythepimp01 Gary does 4 long solid blasts for evac and 3-4 rapid blasts for water. They don't do it by NFPA standards

The fire in the garage was really stubborn. And those firefighters on the roof looked like they were cutting it rather close!
It looks like the firefighters did more damage to the house than the fire itself. I'm joking of course. Good job guys! Glad everyone was safe.

I agree, thought it was a trash line at first, lol. Thanks for the comment
mabas21 3 years ago
1. Should attack from the unburned side
2. use a 2 1/2 inch line with that amount of fire, or 3 inch
3. Mounting the roof at that point provided no benefit, and actually aiding in the advancement of the fire.
4. When the horn goes off, get out or off the roof...do not keep working!
This could have been really bad!
