This is what is wrong about these tennis rankings, Becker and Sampras never came close to winning a clay court major, and the clay court season is a good 1/4 of the year, so how are they ranked number one?
Very strange , makes me wonder , especially Sampras always was ranked number one leading up to Wimbledon. How can that be?, no titles on clay every year. Like I have said before without the large rackets Sampras might have won a 1/4 of the majors instead of how many, 14?
@leverwork1 The rankings were strange back then, especially when Muster only won clay court events and the French Open and became number 1! strange indeed...
Against any other than Tomas Muster 1995 Becker had won this title. 1995 Muster was incredible. And even though Becker had 2 good years from late 1994 to the end of 1996 he didnt win this one. 1996 saw muster in the same shape as in 1995, but in the french open he met in 1996 Michael Stich. And that day MS had decided was a good day, so he won. Maybee Stich could have beaten muster on clay in 1995 a day he felt inspired.
Becker war fix und fertig nach der Partie. So nah war er nie an einem Sandplatztitel dran. Und was Muster ebenfalls gut gemacht hat, er hat Becker auch psychologisch in die Schranken gewiesen. Meisterleistung von Muster.
I remember this match. Shouldn't have gone for 2 aces on match point. He was always aggressive and had guts, though. Muster was tough. 12 clay court titles in 95.
Thanks for the great video. Both of these men were my favorites back in the day. They inspired me to play tennis. Muster would go on to win the French Open that year. Unfortunately for Becker, this is the closest he would come to winning a clay court title. Now he is the answer to a great trivia question. The only player to be ranked #1 in the world without ever winning a clay court title.
Yes,True. Good catch. I do apologize and stand corrected. You are absolutely correct. Completely forgot about the Great Patrick Rafter. I guess he slipped my mind because he was only ranked #1 for a week between July 26th and August 1st of 1999. despite this brief time at the top, he was a great player to watch.
He can care less about that, with winning 14 tournaments in a year, which makes him the most succesful player along with Federer, concerning this statistic.
@neibaf3 Edberg won only 3 clay court titles out of 42 titles, Connors won 12 clay out of 107 titles (althought let us not forget that he played in a league where he dominated for a long time and that is the reason he has sooo many titles), Jonny Mac won 4 clay out of 77 titles, Safin won 2 clay out of 15 titles (both is 2000, he won 7 of his titles that yr, including the US Open), hewitt (so far) has 2 clay out of 28 titles, Sampras had 3 clay out of 64 titles, roddick has 5 out of 29 titles
@neibaf3 I think Muster is the only player ranked #1 never to have won a match at wimbledon, amazing on clay but couldn't play on grass. I'm looking forward to his comeback this year!!
