@djtimwright Oh, the one I have is the same color orange and acts as both a glass breaker and a seatbelt cutter so I assumed it was the same one I got -- It's like eight dollars on amazon.
@Ozzy67HoodJunkies The tool he used the first time is just a seatbelt cutter/windshield breaker that you can get off of amazon for about ten dollars. To answer your second question, a brick doesn't generate a whole lot of force at any one point on the glass, so the glass stays intact because the force on any one point of the glass is minimal. (Imagine diving into a pool - a belly flop doesn't get you very deep in the water, but a pencil dive lets you go fairly deep with minimal effort)
Well it wasn't actually a seatbelt cutter, it was simply a glass hammer. In England you find them on every bus, and they're quite common to be used in break-ins (as they're obviously easily obtained for free).
@hazuki2002 Take a breath of air, smash the glass, pressure equalizes fast (glass isn't sharp), swim towards the surface. Waiting for the pressure to equalize by the water coming in slowly will allow you to sink a lot further.
@hazuki2002 The pressure of the water keeps the door forced shut. Only when the air in the car has escaped can you open the door. Think of the pressure on your ears when you go deep underwater. Make that many times more and over a much larger surface. You can't open the door.
To everyone talking about 'emergency situations', usually the film goes in the inside of the window and can be peeled off should you need to break the window
A brick is soft and has no pointed edges..The brick would not have broken the first window without the safety film..Dont lie to everybody and say the film kept the brick from breaking the window..Any sharp point will break a window..I use a centerpunch..I fix autoglass for a living
Congratulations, you've illustrated a basic element of physics. A ceramic glass breaking hammer will always break glass, and a brick won't. Your tint is merely a piece of plastic film holding the glass from falling in when it shatters (which is what it's designed to do for safety reasons), so not only is this video dumb, but you're making vehicles unsafe.
My dept uses a tool called the "GlasMaster Saw". It's not hard to bust a hole in the window, saw it near the edges and either fold or remove it completely. Google it and see what I mean
@sbudno That's the minus of this solution - safety glass. It's more difficult to get in for robbers. Might be impossible to get in for emergecny. Have to calculate yes-or-not for this solutions..
@sbudno With the same glass break hammer they used in the first part, and secondly in the second part. Any ceramic tipped tool will make safety glass shatter instantly. Their film is just a thin piece of tint that holds the beads suspended, a punch or push will make it collapse in. Any car window tint has the same effect. A brick has a lower hardness level than glass, ceramic has a much higher hardness level. Try breaking a car window with a brick; it won't work.
@sbudno If you're in a car accident severe enough to cause entrapment, there's already other ways for emergency personnel to get you out rather than breaking your windshield. Besides, it'd probably be broken anyways.
Where I come from, we have something called a PRT (Percussive Rescue Tool) which we can use to carefully punch and cut through the glass. We do this rather slowly to prevent showering the victim in debris and/or glass. Any dangers at this point should be eliminated (e.g. any fires put out).
If the victim is in critical condition and must be extracted immediately, we can get a bit messier with hydraulic cutters/spreaders (colloquially known as the "Jaws of Life").
@ronaldli5 The little orange hammer they were using -was- the "emergency equipment" EMT's normally bring with them. Please make sure you know what you're talking about before you say "use your common sense"
@sbudno You understand that the orange hammer that he used in the beginning is an EMT tool, right? The first test was an unrealistic demo of how hard it is to actually break into a car without this film.
This video was a commercial for the "security film."
@sbudno well first - they would dismantle the nearest building. then take a brick and beat your window down for about 20 seconds until they get tired. theyll have a drink and then get the glass breaker that they forgot was in your pocket to beginwith. then they will rage. and it must be a man. or it will fail. the important thing is dismantling the building. use the brick. yes.
@CubeLuda yeah, if your underwater, all of the pressure from being under the water will be pressing on the door, and you will not be able to open the door, the window would be the only way
I know lol its just they make it out to be like a likely scenario and like you'd always keep the thing right next to you. At most, it would be in the boot and not in the glove compartment as over time you'd think it was just taking up space. = useless.
@Doggchief only way to open a car door is when the air has escaped from the cabin of the car which levels out the pressure or you quickly open it as soon as the car hits the water
@squarecnix Spot on, this is why safety glass is made to bead and fall away rapidly like it does. These geniuses are just trying to cash in on stupid road users who're terrified someone's going to steal their shitty stereo.
@squarecnix They do have glass breakers that have a glass breaking tip, but when you press on it the tip oges into the handle and makes a pop, and that pop causes the glass to break.
@squarecnix Yeah, anybody dumb enough to add this obviously isn't thinking about that. But if you have a window breaker in your car, you could shatter it and then shove/kick it out like that guy did. Besides, rolling down your windows as you sink is the safer bet anyways.
@squarecnix This is meant for people who live in cities(usually higher crime rates, smash and grab), and typically they're aren't any lakes or rivers to crash into.
I look at this video and just think how unplausible the panic moments in Doctor Who episode "The Sontaran Stratagem" are... so what the cars are getting poisoned? BREAK THE BLOODY WINDOWS

Tell me how many times in your life so far have you needed to break out of a car that is going underwater? Also, The plan is brake the window with you fist before the water covers it.. Or just open the door before the water gets too high.
Have fun trying to escape out of that car when it's flipped upside down and on fire. That glass is designed to shatter easily because for one there is no large shards of glass to go through your throat, and two you can get out of the car in an emergency if the door is jammed. I guess you would keep to thief out for a while but you would also trap your self in a life or death split second moment.
btw the whole idea of waiting untill the car fills up to equalise so u can open he door easier is a myth. they proved it on mythbusters and other science shows. the advice now is to open the door the second u go in water ;) i think they done it on topgear too
actually if you go read the results of mythbusters test on their website you'll find that they proved it was possible to open the door after it was fully submerged if you wait until the car is fully flooded. You have to hold your breath for a while and it probably isn't very comfortable but if you stay calm and conserve your oxygen you can do it. for those of us who don't get the door open or window down before the water gets to them.
if you wait until the car is mostly full of water the pressure equalizes and you can open the door. just hope you don't drive into a fast moving river. I think the bigger concern is when you get in an accident that tweaks your frame so the door doesn't open and your car starts on fire.
humantestdummy: Dude you can't. The pressure would make that impossible. You gotta try to get the window down a bit or something, let the car fill with water while holding your breath and once pressure is equalized then you can open the door.
Listen guys, there is no way you would EVER break a window under water in the hopes to escape. If for any reason this does happen, kick out the windshield! The weather stripping and pressure against the window and within the vehicle will pop it out and suck you along with it.
Breaking glass isnt even a safe way to escape a sinking car. Break it, you get the pressure of the water rushing in, glass shards pop towards your face, fail.
a brick could not break the glass but the red tool could? what is that red tool... i would imagine the only reason the glass broke on the first try is because of the localized force?
This is the big debate between laminated glass & security film, lam"" glass you ARE trapped little chance, film allows to kickout from inside. Underwater not really an issue, pressure smashing a window from fully submerged is like being hit with a 160kg force full impact. IT BLOODY WELL HURTS & usually knocks them out, if the glass smashed + water rushing to you doesn't slash your face to bits, imagine airbag face bruising + loads of paper cuts and lots of glass splinters, all in your face.
Very good point. My uncle got hit in his van and the doors were jammed shut from the impact. He builds houses so he had all kinds of flammable liquids and stuff in the back. He had to take a hammer to his windshield to get out. It took him over 40 minutes with him and the guy who hit him to break the windshield. By the time the fire department finally got there he could have burned to death.
If he had one of those tools he could have been out in a few seconds.
Nice video but it would've been better to hit the second window with the break glass hammer first, then kick it in, even an un treated normal window would stand up to a brick at that distant, the corners get softened off. but nice video all the same. as for being traped I ask them to try and get out of any car through the window even when wound down, witnessed this at a show and most couldn't do it. and the emergency services don't break windows any more, we cut the doors off instead.
one thing took a shit load of wacks to shatter the glass, he need his boot to break it off, so if yoru in the car how are you gonna smash the glass if yrou trapped? and if you ever get stuck in water and are sinking, good luck getting out since the double force of water and protection of window film will most likely make it impossible to break through if the power window motor is fried.
ha ha not the brick, lol, you know people are stupid on you tube when you need to include not the brik lol, anyway its like a glass smashing tool (obviously) but you can find them on like outdoor or like police or emergency/safety catolouges or webstsites like galls or jl self defense might have them, their usually cheap like around 10 bucks
As a firefighter i dont think that is safe at all because when your stuck in you car and dyeing because we cant save you because you thought you need so security film on it its going to suck
most people wouldn't react like that. they usually go for the window. and also it might not work if your battery shorts everything out. unless its a crappy manual window. but yeah thats a good idea though
hmm no offense but they tested your theory of rolling your window down but because of the pressure of the watter on the glass the mechanism wouldn't budge so i guess the more sensible thing would be like someone said not to dive your car in a lake in the first place
Just get the tool he used to break the window (not the brick). And place it in your glove box or center console. if you decide to drive into a body of water, smash the window with the hammer. Easy as that.
My car has protection glass similar to this. But, the car has sensors all around. When the car is in an accident the doors unlock and turns on the emergency lights on. Its pretty cool stuff but I don't think it shouldn't be put on cars unless its factory fitted like mine are. Like Fitins400 said, enjoy bleeding to death. That is unless your car is like mine :P.

xasthurhead 2 years ago
Listen guys, there is no way you would EVER break a window under water in the hopes to escape. If for any reason this does happen, kick out the windshield! The weather stripping and pressure against the window and within the vehicle will pop it out and suck you along with it.
spdbmp3 2 years ago
not a good idea if you drive into a lake or ocean, takes that much longer to get out
TheElectricUndead 2 years ago
Breaking glass isnt even a safe way to escape a sinking car. Break it, you get the pressure of the water rushing in, glass shards pop towards your face, fail.

Exactly!

Haha, use the same tool mate.

a brick could not break the glass but the red tool could? what is that red tool... i would imagine the only reason the glass broke on the first try is because of the localized force?

so what if you get stuck in your car:
1. fire?
2. under water?
3. upside down?
lol
YoungStuntMusic 3 years ago 5
This is the big debate between laminated glass & security film, lam"" glass you ARE trapped little chance, film allows to kickout from inside. Underwater not really an issue, pressure smashing a window from fully submerged is like being hit with a 160kg force full impact. IT BLOODY WELL HURTS & usually knocks them out, if the glass smashed + water rushing to you doesn't slash your face to bits, imagine airbag face bruising + loads of paper cuts and lots of glass splinters, all in your face.
Goingdowntosouthpark 3 years ago
that would suck haha, i guess if you think someone will want our car, install lowjack or something
mobsterbillyjoe 2 years ago
Very good point. My uncle got hit in his van and the doors were jammed shut from the impact. He builds houses so he had all kinds of flammable liquids and stuff in the back. He had to take a hammer to his windshield to get out. It took him over 40 minutes with him and the guy who hit him to break the windshield. By the time the fire department finally got there he could have burned to death.
If he had one of those tools he could have been out in a few seconds.
gusu666 2 years ago
Nice video but it would've been better to hit the second window with the break glass hammer first, then kick it in, even an un treated normal window would stand up to a brick at that distant, the corners get softened off. but nice video all the same. as for being traped I ask them to try and get out of any car through the window even when wound down, witnessed this at a show and most couldn't do it. and the emergency services don't break windows any more, we cut the doors off instead.
Goingdowntosouthpark 3 years ago 2
all you need is bullet proof glass and that film and the put them together..the ultimate glass..but if you go into a lake your screwed LOL

lol if he used the tool at first he would be as fast as he was when he destroyed the normal glass...
13freitag13 3 years ago
do you think everyone who has ever broke into a car used that tool?
03protegeES 3 years ago 3
one thing took a shit load of wacks to shatter the glass, he need his boot to break it off, so if yoru in the car how are you gonna smash the glass if yrou trapped? and if you ever get stuck in water and are sinking, good luck getting out since the double force of water and protection of window film will most likely make it impossible to break through if the power window motor is fried.

ArnoldSwarzeneggar75 3 years ago 2
dont want to crash and end up in a lake! then what will you do?
littlesht2 3 years ago
Erm, wind the window down? Just a thought.
ArnoldSwarzeneggar75 3 years ago
most people wouldn't react like that. they usually go for the window. and also it might not work if your battery shorts everything out. unless its a crappy manual window. but yeah thats a good idea though
littlesht2 3 years ago
hmm no offense but they tested your theory of rolling your window down but because of the pressure of the watter on the glass the mechanism wouldn't budge so i guess the more sensible thing would be like someone said not to dive your car in a lake in the first place
GABISTEAUA87 3 years ago
yeah. I said that also.
ArnoldSwarzeneggar75 3 years ago
Just get the tool he used to break the window (not the brick). And place it in your glove box or center console. if you decide to drive into a body of water, smash the window with the hammer. Easy as that.

>.> correction on my grammer sorry... "turns the emergency lights on", "I don't think it SHOULD be put on cars unless factory fitted".
outpostprime 4 years ago
My car has protection glass similar to this. But, the car has sensors all around. When the car is in an accident the doors unlock and turns on the emergency lights on. Its pretty cool stuff but I don't think it shouldn't be put on cars unless its factory fitted like mine are. Like Fitins400 said, enjoy bleeding to death. That is unless your car is like mine :P.
