  • When I first saw it, there was no description, only "euthanasia of fish" as the title. I just wanted to clarify that the fish was simply anesthetized.

  • im happy to see someone care so much for there koi :3

  • The fish was alive when it was wrapped. It was only anesthetized, not dead., not dead.x

  • The gills were still moving when h e wrapped. Did you use only clove oil? How long did you leave him in the solution? I see no commentary...

  • @4ziggs There is no commentary Did you at least see the description for the video?

  • what was the problem of the fish? What does he had?

  • @2100sof The fish was treated for an ulcer on its face.

  • Correct me if i'm wrong.. but that fish was alive when you began to wrap him :(

  • @Extremegamerer Read the information with the clip.

  • @fishtanksandponds Oops, my bad, I had annotations off lol.. Sry

  • Same like clove oil usually used for small fish.... used as a sedative, and if euthanasia was at hand, you'd use clove oil to put the fish to sleep, and use the vodka to painlessly kill them... Sometimes, it is better to put them down then let them live.

  • @OneFreedomForever There is no need to use vodka, it is an irritant and pointless. It will help to mix the oil of cloves with water but if tepid water is used there is no need for it. The oil of cloves alone will do the job if the dose is right. And it is far better than letting a fish suffer unnecessarily.

  • @fishtanksandponds that's just what I've been told. I've never needed to use it, as I have 13 healthy bettas most of them rescues who've gone through so much and never needed to be put "out of their misery" :) I was pretty sure cloves would do the same, without vodka but again, I wouldn't know I was just being told from many people what to use for any fish. And darn if my betta were bigger I'd want to use your method for his tumor/thing on his side closer to his tail ><

  • Lots of people have very little regard for fish - resources they call them - swimming veggys - it is refreshing to see someone actually take the time out to show compassion for them as you have - people think they are at the bottom of the food chain - hardly - the ones I had seemed like sensitive curious little souls ... Bless you for the kindness you have shown - perhaps it will rub off on others who think fish's whole existence was meant just for us to eat a mere food source for us...

  • You disgusting FISH MURDERER! I hope you get scoliosis and your penis falls off!!!!!

  • @kingcahoj Pratt. I suggest that you find someone who can read and then ask them to read the information about this video to you. Then perhaps you'll be in a better position to comment.

  • @fishtanksandponds Maybe kingcahoj would rather you just smash it over the head with a hammer... some people are so thick, this was the kindest way to put it out of its misery when all other treatments had failed. But this fish was for demonstration only...

  • @kingcahoj dumbass

  • @kingcahoj I had scoliosis, and my spine was bent at more than 90 degrees, and my lungs and heart were being crushed by my spine. I had to have my ribs broken, my lungs deflated, part of my spine removed, metal rods screwed into my spine, and I am partially bed bound. Dispite some people's actions, I wouldn't want anyone to go what I've been through, so before you say things like that, think about people like me who have to suffer every day of their life. Thank you.

  • what chemicals did you use did it have any effect on the gills like chemically burned?

  • @CrimelabS The chemical was 2-Phenoxyethanol, there are two doses, one for anaesthesia and one for euthanasia. If dosed for the former it does absolutely no harm to the fish. If overdosed then it swiftly kills the fish.

  • Did you use clove oil? If so, what dosage do you use for sedation?

  • Good video, despite the quick to cry about how horrible this is. Just a thought: If you had added a commentary track to the video, it might have helped some what in making your presentation more clear.

  • its so pretty.

  • Fish are often euthanized for various reasons. Koi may contract a strain of herpes that is untreatable and extremely contagious to other koi. I dont see whats wrong with the video

  • @fishtanksandpods Since you were sedating it and not euthanizing it, why don't you rename this video to something like "anesthesia of fish" instead? Then you don't have to get all these angry comments.

  • @pearlykitty Because the whole point of the clip was to show the correct way to painlessly euthanise a fish in a situation where no cure is possible. The chemicals used for sedation will kill the fish painlessly and quickly when used at an higher dosage. This is far better than all the other outdated (and often cruel) methods which are commonly found on various websites. The clip shows the effectiveness of this method and so is indisputable and so that's the reason for it being here.

  • @fishtanksandponds out of curiosity what are the "cruel methods?" smacking it on a rock?

  • @jwalker477 The methods I refer to as being cruel are mainly ineffective methods which either increase suffering or prolong suffering. The bashing on a rock method often fails to work the first time and may even take several goes to be effective. The freezer method can take a long time to work and contrary to popular opinion, slowly freezing to death doesn't put a fish slowly to sleep. It would be an incredibly slow and painful death. Flushing is another poor method, I could go on.

  • @fishtanksandponds well i fish for salmon and what i was told fish cant feel anything. now that makes me mad. all them times i smaked that salmons head on a rock for a good dinner :(

  • @fishtanksandponds so please tell me whats the best way to kill a fish painlessly i used the method super hot water and i drop it in it works he died immediatly.

  • @priksarxida Did you notice the video above these comments? You'll find the answer there.

  • You killed that pretty thing??

  • @robsten321 Read and learn.

  • @fishtanksandponds I didn't asked that. Did you killed it or not?

  • @robsten321 It actually states on the video clip that the fish was NOT harmed, I really don't know how I could make it any more clear than that. But once again I repeat - THIS VIDEO IS FOR ILLUSTRATION ONLY, THE FISH WASN'T ACTUALLY HARMED BUT IT WAS SEDATED IN ORDER TO TREAT AN ULCER. Just out of curiosity, why do you ask when this question was answered just 8 messages ago and is still easily visible, and the answer is also on the clip itself? So - no it wasn't killed. It is still alive.

  • @fishtanksandponds Ok. Fine. Thanks.

  • poor fish...I hope it's okay...ulcers suck ass

  • How do you know it has ulcer?

  • @iamwingirds Ulcers on fish are very easily seen.

  • wtf that fish looked healthy as and they live for hundreds of years why put it down? you should have been the one being put down

  • @obieezx11 Why don't you find out what is really happening before making your comments. That way you will make less of a fool of yourself.

  • @fishtanksandponds Can you answer his question it does look healthy. What was wrong poor guy.

  • @MoneyFukinMike It had an ulcer on it's head.

  • @obieezx11 "THIS VIDEO IS FOR ILLUSTRATION ONLY, THE FISH WASN'T ACTUALLY HARMED BUT IT WAS SEDATED IN ORDER TO TREAT AN ULCER."

  • why not smack its head on a rock?

    it would be quicker

  • @b52jamesb52 Because doing so is cruel and is usually ineffective with a single blow. It is sometimes difficult to do due to the size of the fish.

If you had a pet dog and after many years it developed a terminal illness, you take it to the vet in order to end unnecessary suffering and he/she takes it outside and slams it against a wall. Would you consider that to be professional and satisfactory? I know I wouldn't.

The method shown here is COMPLETELY effective 100% of the time without pain.

  • @fishtanksandponds your compleatly right could you please tell me what you did here ?

  • @dappledbaybeauty We added some 2 phenoxyethanol (marketed as a koi anaesthetic) although oil of cloves will also do the job, If either are used at the recommended dose they will sedate the fish making large fish easier to treat without risk of injury. If they are used with a high dose they will kill the fish painlessly and quickly.

  • @fishtanksandponds thank you very much might I just add you are doing a wonderfull job fish euthanasia has to be done sometimes and unfortunalty alot of the time it is a painfull death for them you did a wonderfull job and your very kind haerted people to do this in the fish "s best intrest and If I ever get a fish in need of euthanasia I will always euthanase this way becuse as seen it is very peacefull painless and very clean and quick thank you so much for adding this video it helps so much!

  • this is vital information and i appreciate you sharing it. i once had a fish (green bird wrasse) that suffered and died naturally because I didn't know how to humanely put it down. my vet didn't even know.

  • Poor fish. :(

  • I've been keeping fish for 39 years and I've never seen that before. Talk about live and learn! Mind, I'm a tropical keeper and know next to nothing about pondkeeping beyond the basics.

    Interesting vid.

  • what was that you put into the water?

  • Comment removed

  • @kissy93257 Why not read the info provided before making a comment?

  • @kissy93257 I skipped through the thing, sorry if that affending you...

  • How did you treat the ulcer?

  • @itanaru03x04 With iodine. Only one treatment was needed.

  • Did the fish make it??

  • Ohh ok that's pretty cool

  • please dont sell it to a japanese market or eat it!

  • fish is pretty big! hope it recovered fine from the ulcer =] good to see some people actually research and take care of 'em rather than just ploppin' 'em in a pond or a tank and forgettin' 'bout it.

  • Ok, what is it sick with? What's wrong withe fish?

  • @DXTRChannel As stated on the clip itself and repeated many many times in these messages - "This video is for illustration only, the fish wan't actually harmed but it was sedated to treat an ulcer".

Euthanasia of fish is done using the same product as sedating them only using a higher dose. The video is meant only to show the effectiveness of this method. I would never put a video of an actual death on YouTube.

  • I had an oscar, she was huge, and lovely, but she lost her eye sight and I had to do the same thing.

I cried for a week after, she was my baby. :(

  • i cried

  • I dont think its euthanasia way... it still suffers as it seems... i may be wrong but...

  • @HellinSniper How does a deeply unconcious anaethatised fish suffer?

  • why do it? Do you think now you are mor clever?

  • @rilo982 There is nothing clever about euthanising a fish. It is done to prevent unnecessary suffering when there is no hope of a successful treatment and the fish is suffering in some way. The method illustrated in the video is fast, painless and without any extra stress on the fish.

  • In my opinion euthanizing a fish is not the best way to finish him bcause he still suffer a bit,if u wanna do something do it quickly.

  • @RaulfDaSilva The chemicals used are true anaesthetics, if the fish is in any pain due to a terminal condition then the pain issue would be immediately resolved, the fish quickly becomes relaxed and then fully sedated prior to death. I know of no other more humane method than this. Sharp blows ect are rarely effective the first time and catching the fish, holding it out of water while the deed is done must be extremely distressing to the fish and needlesly so.

  • @fishtanksandponds Ok thank you.

  • @RaulfDaSilva

Why do you think he's sedating him?

He suffers? How? If I put a mask with NO2 on your face or make you take a deep breath of chloroform, how did you suffer because of me putting you to sleep?

Sedating the fish doesn't hurt it any more than sedating you with an aerosol or gas would hurt you.

  • @RaulfDaSilva The method is used by animal health experts, perhaps you are an expert in the field? in which case your opinion more valid than theirs? Otherwise it isn't. But by all means do some research and make a good counter argument if you like.

  • stupide, ridicule

  • Wow, people are dumb. I don't know if we should blame this on the education system or take it as evidence of uranium in the water supply! How many times does this poor guy have to answer the same questions?

We recently had to put down a gourami that we'd gotten very attached to. It was very sad. Worst part was the guy at our regular fish store who told us "just flush it" when we asked how to euthanize. Glad we're not the only people who value their little lives and want them to go peacefully.

  • 1:17 it's alive!!

  • @mkmkh2 Yes it is. And it is still alive and doing well today.

As stated on the video the fish was simply sedated to treat an ulcer and the video was edited in such a way to show that this method could be used to humanely euthanise a terminally ill fish in order to prevent unnecessary suffering.

It's all there in black and white for anyone who cares to read it.

  • @fishtanksandponds how do you treat it? what proceadure do you use? I'm sure you didn't harm that beautiful koi ;)

  • @Nearman The koi was sedated and laid on a plastic sheet, (some people use towels but they damage the kois skin). Then we treated with topical iodine, only one treatment was needed and the fish made a full recovery. In fact it was feeding normally just one hour after this clip was filmed.

  • It's lovely to see someone who takes the time to actually let them go nicely. It's clear you care as you bring him out of the water after he is passed. I have seen so many leave them in a dry bucket to die, brick them, or simply chuck them in the bin while still alive. Well done for being one of so few people who still care.

  • @LuckyParrots "bricking" a fish is also humane. Leaving them in a dry bucket or the trash is not, because they will suffocate. However, if the fish is small enough, an instantaneous destruction of the brain will not have them suffer except for one instant.

  • A wild Magikarp appeared!

    Sorry about your fish.

  • @AFlyingBeagle127 An ulcer is a type of open wound which can be difficult to get to heal.

  • @AFlyingBeagle127 An ulcer is a type of open wound which can be difficult to get to heal.

  • This might sound weird but to make a fish stay alive but not move ( paralize ), you take a bucket of cold water and put the fish into it. It's almost like frozen in Time!

By the way what were you wrapping the fish for?

  • @Greenbean517 The water has some anaesthetic in it, it isn't just water. The fish was covered to keep it wet, as mentioned on the video the fish in the clip wasn't actually euthanised it was anaesthetised so that an ulcer could be treated without the risk of further injury. The clip was done to show the effectiveness of the anaesthesia.

  • @fishtanksandponds Oh ok Gotcha. How did the treatment go?

  • @Greenbean517 It went really well thanks, the fish required just the one treatment and it made a full recovery.

  • did you just kill a fish???? XD

  • @EmmaBrownful No.

  • a man in my neighborhood poisoned a near by lake with some concoction and as the cops were dragging him he said he got t from youtube. :c

  • @ParanoidToaster I don't know what they used but it wasn't this chemical, it cost £3.51 just to treat that bowl, to treat a lake would cost £ tens of thousands not only that but you could never buy it in such a quantity without arousing suspicion because it is an essential oil and can be toxic to people if taken in large doses.

  • @fishtanksandponds what kind of money is thit

  • @cholomono12 Sterling. (British pounds) £3.51 = $5.51 at today's exchange rate.

  • @fishtanksandponds you must mean CLOVE OIL right? a small jar is rather expensive but I always keep it on hand for an anesthetic and to euthenize.

  • @grettagrids Clove oil, Oil of cloves - same thing and it does work. But 2-Phenoxyethanol is much better. It is usually sold as a Koi sedative from most good koi dealers. There are two dosages, one for sedation and a larger dose for euthanasia.

  • what the hell is wrong with you?! if it was a fish of about 2 inches then it wouldn't matter. how old was that fish exactly?

  • @TheMusicChicks101 ohh my gosh!!! do you also get mad when a fisherman catshes a fish and eats it? that fish doesn't probably got longer mind than 10 seconds...

  • waht`s up with you ??? it isn`t funny

  • At our store I heard you could use baking soda as a humane way

  • @kevass007 Baking soda will simply raise the pH to around 7.8 or so. It won't harm the fish in any way. Lots of people including me use it as a pH buffer.

  • why would it develop ulcer in the first place if it is well taken care of

  • @ppip15 Simple, it wouldn't. The fish was a new import from Japan and didn't travel to well. As a result it had the ulcer and because of this it was very much reduced in price. We took a gamble that it could be cured and we had a good quality fish cheaply.

  • what type of chemical did you use?

  • what was wrong whit the fish ???

  • whoa, who actually cares that much about a FISH?

  • @graceGoodbye07 Me!!!

  • @graceGoodbye07 Me too

  • @graceGoodbye07 when it comes to fish like this when it can be a LOT of money like as much as a car lol they care

  • @graceGoodbye07 me too, fish are also living things!

  • won't keeping the fish out of the water for so long kill it?

  • it was still alive when you took it out of the solution

  • @yankovic1234 Here is the same reply which has been used several times on here already.

The fish in the clip was just treated for an ulcer. The clip has been re-edited to illustrate how the anaesthetic could be used as a humane method of euthanasia. But euthanasia does mean ending a life even though it didn't happen in this case.

As I have stated on here many times, the video is for illustration only since I refuse to show an actual death of any fish on here.

  • @fishtanksandponds oh sorry about that i didn't mean to offend you if i did

  • @fishtanksandponds

I am told also putting them in the freezer is a kind way of ending it as they slowly go to sleep. Its horrible to watch a pet suffer. And fish are no different to cats/puppies

  • why u want it dead?

  • @JuliaElise383 This has been explained over and over again. Read the info.

  • @fishtanksandponds oh i get it u let it sleep

  • RIP

  • hey guys? im pretty sure they meant anesthesia. not euthanasia.

  • The same compound is used for both, but at a higher dosage for euthanasia, and of course the fish is left in the solution until it is dead when euthanasia is used.

  • I tend to take my fish and use some clove oil, after they are knocked out, I then place them in the freezer, usually are dead less than a minute

  • @KingofSpain101 Lol are you a serial pet killer? Why would you freeze your fish?

  • you know I thought what I was going to see when I clicked on this video was another dumb teenager being an ass and thinking he's cool beating or poisoning a helpless fish, but...I see where you are coming from and its good to know that I don't have to watch my babies suffer when the day comes that they need have treatment. I will most definately talk to my vet first, but I didn't know that this was an option. Thanks

  • @FiestyCat86 Thank you.

  • NO FISHY o_o

  • why would you wanna kill it?

  • Euthanasia is used when a fish is suffering or in pain from a condition which is unlikely ever to get better and is untreatable.

It is to prevent unnecessary suffering that is the only time it should be used.

  • do you realize the fish was still living when you put it in a bag? i saw his mouth moving...

  • Do you realise that the video is just a demo and the fish wasn't harmed in any way? It was heavily sedated to treat an ulcer. All the info is there if you care to read it before jumping to conclusions.

  • @XtremeMasterRJ

He's not killing it for real, he's just showing how you could go the whole way if the fish was terminally ill. This fish isn't terminally ill, he was sedating it so he could treat an ulcer. That's why at the end, the tail was being prepped.

  • finally someone who's able to kill a fish in a gentle way.

    i've got respect for you.

this fish didn't suffer at all, people shoot do it just like him.

  • bullshit, you need to respect nature, this fish was created for a higher purpose

  • You need to learn when it's time to prevent unnecessary suffering!!!

  • what the hell is that white liquid

  • anaesthetic

  • Its actually cyanide thats how they knock out fish

  • It isn't cyanide. Cyanide is practically unobtainable by legal means due to its toxicity. Cyanide is used illegally for poaching and illegally collecting marine fish.

We use oil of cloves for euthanasia of fish in domestic situations.

  • its a fish.....just flush it.

  • lol, i thought euthanizing meant to kill =(

  • You are correct in your assumption.

  • i thought you were just knocking it out and operating on it.

  • The fish in the clip was just treated for an ulcer. The clip has been re-edited to illustrate how the anaesthetic could be used as a humane method of euthanasia. But euthanasia does mean ending a life even though it didn't happen in this case.

As I have stated on here many times, the video is for illustration only since I refuse to show an actual death of any fish on here.

  • ok, thanks. was that clove oil?

  • It was a similar product called 2-phenoxyethanol. It is sold by quite a few Koi dealers as a fish anaesthetic, it can be used for treating the fish or as an overdose for humane euthanasia. Oil of cloves will act in just the same way though.

  • i have a question did this fish actually die here. just asking. i know this is the best way to end pain and suffering if the fish is going to die either way

  • This is really good info.

His treatments were failing so he put the fish to sleep like a doctor would to a human to treat a wound or do another type of surgery.

The fish had an ulcer and regular treatments weren't working so he put the fish to sleep to work with the ulcer directly.

  • Thanks kmon123, for one of the very few common sense comments about this clip.

  • wow some of you are really dumb. did you not read the part where MULTIPLE times he said the fish was still alive. from just a brief reading of his comment replies, you can see he was using the same technique(/medication?) for anaesthesia as is (in a higher dosage i presume ) used for euthanasia.

he said more than once that the fish in the video is still currently alive. reading comprehension yo! it's a good thing to have.

  • not bad other than it looks like it's still breathing when you take it out.

  • Just read the previous messages!!!

  • The animal was suffering or a ulcer.

This guy placed him to sleep in a good way, unlike other people who throw fish away or flush them in public.

    :l

    Stop arguing or don't watch.

  • what are you doing there

  • there are people who swallow fish here on Youtube

there are people who flush them alive

and you guys are getting mad at him because he is HUMANLEY euthanizing a fish?

oh then I guess putting my dog to sleep because of a deathening cancer was animal cruelty too...

  • Don't get too heated up. It's best to ignore these abundant, youtube idiots.

I've seen these people get heated up at videos of people bathing their dogs. And start shouting "ANIMAL ABUSER!!!".

    I mean... PLEASE!

I've got fish, and sometimes it's impossible to heal them, even although you try. We fishkeepers go through the dilemma of how to kill it the most humanely possible, and this video is very helpful.

  • @vitaminaqua if your mother had cancer you would euthanasiate her? people are so smart.. guess what.. people are animals..look in the street every day you go to work.. let it be..if it dies.. it dies .. miracles can happen ;) look closely at a group of people entering a supermarket to buy something for half price.. they will go like animals.. and step one eich other;) is not humanely to kill an animal ;)

  • @catalynoo So your opinion is that it is better to leave it in pain and left to be eaten alive once it is in no position to defend itself (which is the reality of the fish world). Well I disagree!!!. Better to humanely end the unnecessary suffering.

Incidentaly their is a debate going on about assisted suicide for humans at the moment when medical help is no longer effective and suffering is taking place. In some countries like Holland it is already acceptable.

  • @catalynoo OK so I guess euthanising my dog because of LUNG CANCER AND LIVER FAILURE was animal cruelty too?

  • @jeffandscottvideos1 Absolutely not. You did the right thing. I really don't understand why people are so much against preventing excess suffering provided it is done humanely and for a genuine reason - i.e. when a fish is terminally ill, suffering and with no available effective treatment.

It's not as though I am recommending killing them for fun or ammusement or anything. Oh well :(

  • Seriously people, why would he take such great care if he was killing it?

  • Do you think it would be better to show a complete lack of care?

  • For all those who wish to comment without bothering to read the full facts here's a message previously written by me on the last page.

"This video is for illustration only, the fish wasn't actually euthanised, it was sedated in order for us to treat an ulcer. The fish made a full recovery and is alive and well.

Euthanasia has it's place when the fish is incurable and it is better than letting the suffering continue pointlessly. "

  • very peacefull way of doing it...but y did you put it to sleep??It looked healty..but when you took it out of the water it was still breathing!!! plz write bk and tell me why u put it too sleep??

  • Seriously, wtf?

  • ANIMAL CRUELTY!!! why?? bec!. why would any person? kill a perfectly normal HEALTHY fich! for no good reason!?.. by the way.. that koi is so gorgeous!!.. what a waste of time!!!

  • You're stupid man !!!

  • what did u put do you put in there

  • To help people like me, that wouldn't know what to do had my fish contracted an incurable disease. We love our fish, but we don't have accessible, specialised, vet help to help them. We become vet apprentices ourselves, and have a really hard time.

This video is very helpful to all.

  • I just had to euthanize a fish today, it sucks but it's way more humane than allowing it to suffer.

  • harsh, but a peacefull way to do it.

  • For all those people who say this is "murder" - I think this way is much more humane then flushing it down the toilet ALIVE and letting it suffer.

I'd also rather see the fish euthanized then suffer from an illness that cannot seem to be cured and is getting worse.

By the way, the fish in the movie seems quite healthy. Why did you euthanize him?

  • he clearly was suffering from what ever he put in there i dont believe in euthanasia he should have fed it to a much larger fish it would have been at least natural

  • Go find a shark. Kois are by far one of the biggest domestic fish to have at home.

Unless you are one of those eccentric millionaires with a bullshark in a pool.
