It should raise alerts when the interest of a decimal percentage of the population have major influence on the politics of a country. One simply needs to look at the greater realities surrounding the issue to understand it's not simply an issue "let'em be". Several proponents of gay marriage have clearly stated the goal is to subvert heterosexual marriage. Read "After the Ball" by Marshall Kirk and Hunter Madsen.

Polygamy and gay marriage are not at all comparable. One expands the sphere of human rights to more individuals, while the other has the potential to threaten human rights - especially those of women - in the case where wives are treated as property.

I did not bring up the comparison between polygamy and gay marriage... in fact there are many feminists and human rights advocates that might agree with you. Eg, multiple women sharing a husband would relieve much domestic pressures and open up opportunities for women to pursue careers, education, etc. My point was that this is a completely different debate and should not be used in comparison to gay marriage.

These two are the most historically accurate books on roman empire.
