Erin, you suggest we should be open-minded and tolerant of others' ideas - change our society for 'the better' (e.g. Let everyone marry whomever they wish - perhaps my pet cat - our human right, correct? Who are you to tell me otherwise?) Ah, our beloved liberal arts education. Tolerance for all - except those that disagree with you! Wow, real 'tolerant' of you! People who deny that absolute Truths exist and are there to be discovered and understood are simply blinded by their own intolerance.
Good for her. It's all about discourse and awareness = critical thinking. That is exactly what a liberal arts education produces. So, if you wish to talk about "how many gays are out there" or their "evil plans to destroy marriage". That isn't the point.
Never mind that less than 5% of gays get married, and their own activists say they are pushing this to destroy heterosexual marriage. Never mind that gays are only 2% of the population but are redefining the main social rite of 98% of the population. In Larson's mind, heterosexuals have no "human rights."
@Synergistik I dont know how gay marriage can possibly impinge the rights of straight people in our society... and if the gay population is so insignificant, why all the aggressive opposition? If you don't like gay marriage, don't marry a gay person :)
@marlabette I never said they were impinging on the rights of people. It should raise alerts when the interest of a decimal percentage of the population have major influence on the politics of a country. One simply needs to look at the greater realities surrounding the issue to understand it's not simply an issue "let'em be". Several proponents of gay marriage have clearly stated the goal is to subvert heterosexual marriage. Read "After the Ball" by Marshall Kirk and Hunter Madsen.
@TimeGod12 Erin is not saying that homosexuality is a human right, she is simply saying that every individual has the right to marry and to a family. Polygamy and gay marriage are not at all comparable. One expands the sphere of human rights to more individuals, while the other has the potential to threaten human rights - especially those of women - in the case where wives are treated as property.
@marlabette Who gives you the right to suggest that polygamy is wrong and gay marriage is right? What do you base this argument on? Your own opinion? What makes your opinion better than TimeGod12's? 'Potential to threaten human rights"? What are you talking about? What about a situation where all the spouses in a polygamous marriage are treated with great kindness and great love? Your argument holds no water whatsoever. Yikes!
@achristmasguy2004 My opinions of gay marriage don't rest on refuting polygamy at all. I did not bring up the comparison between polygamy and gay marriage... in fact there are many feminists and human rights advocates that might agree with you. Eg, multiple women sharing a husband would relieve much domestic pressures and open up opportunities for women to pursue careers, education, etc. My point was that this is a completely different debate and should not be used in comparison to gay marriage.
@marlabette yeah but they do rest on your opinion of gay marriage...and remember it's just your opinion...mine might be different than yours, but you better tolerate that.
@marlabette I don't see where you got the assumption that women are treated as property in polygamy marriages. Polygamy contributes to existence of humanity, homosexuality does not.
If anything Muslim women in progressive Middle East countries are respected much more than many American or Canadian women who continue to dress up in a provocative manner and act manly and aggressive and hence have a higher divorce rate.
@TimeGod12 , you don't get out much. Gay people continue to reproduce, and also care for other people's discarded children.
Nevertheless, you have a bizarre idea of "contributes to existence of humanity" if the only way to contribute is to reproduce. You might have noticed that the world is over-populated leading to artificial scarcity of resources like clean water. Also, rape also "contributes", but it is correctly illegal.
@rg0057 I see you playing the gender card and thanks for the personal attack, very mature of you.
There is a difference between respecting respectable women and disrespecting women who commit stupid actions not knowing what their stupidity can lead too.
History has shown that all major empires that promoted homosexuality have come to ruin from within by moral degeneracy. Example- Roman, Spartan, Athenian empires all fell.
Unfortunately for you, your supporters are mostly old, white, poorly educated and dying. The new future is going to belong to immigrants. Who aren't so poorly informed about biology that they actually believe leviticus or any other misogynistic christian doggerel (two words for you to look up there). In genesis 19:8 it was actually better that a man let his daughters be raped then two grown men be raped? What kind of 'man' would let that happen? Finally, the roman empire lasted 2000 years.
@Sl1nkYx Why are you quoting bible out of context? Plus genesis 19:8 is the story of sinners and how their civilization came to an end because they had no concept of morality.
Roman empire was built on strong moral traditions and that's why it lasted so long but during its last years almost all the politicians and kings were gay and had little boys as concubines.
@TimeGod12 Actually, if you did a 'little' research, you would see that as of 390 ad christian's had taken hold of the roman empire and made homosexual acts punishable by death.
King James Bible
Behold now, I have two daughters which have not known man; let me, I pray you, bring them out unto you, and do ye to them as [is] good in your eyes: only unto these men do nothing; for therefore came they under the shadow of my roof.
Look, I have two daughters who have never slept with a man. Let me bring them out to you, and you can do what you like with them.
So any sane individual would agree that he thought it better that his two virgin daughters be raped ? Than his guests? And under your god's eye this was good?
@Sl1nkYx I have the book "The decline and fall of roman empire" by E. Gibbon and "The fall of the roman empire" by P. Heather right next to me.
These two are the most historically accurate books on roman empire.
NOWHERE in the books does it state that homosexual acts were punishable infact this behavior was encouraged by rulers like Tiberius and Nero who were fully degenerate gay paedophiles. And soon after the Roman empire ruined itself never to recover again.
@TimeGod12 well actually homosexuality would help the UNICEF estimated number of orphans at 210 million in the world today.. THAT POLYGAMY CREATED YOU DUMB FUCK..
@m4rcus567 Thank you for using gutter language, very mature of you.
You have no proof that polygamy created all those orphans.
All I have done is given you proof and yet you simply can't refute my arguments in an academic way. It seems you only have limited intellect since you generalize and give no proof.
There's a number of hard-working women and men at U of M that stand for everything you do, and do it without polarizing everyone they encounter. The "sell-outs" at University of Manitoba are busy actually changing the world by pioneering green power, developing new agricultural practices that help third-world countries become self-sufficient, and finding cures for diseases that plague millions. Enjoy your third-rate psych bach.
Look at this smug piece of shit. Insulting University of Manitoba students and calling us "the man." Fuck you, Erin Larson. You are standing up for nobody. You are an ivory tower piece of shit trying to make a name for yourself. The worst part is that Vic Toews actually is a monster and you're causing people to actually take his side.
Teaching undergraduates can leave one cynical about the ability of young people to 'walk the walk', but Erin's courage stands in strong distinction to that. To her detractors here: you should be celebrating her polite and resolute stance even if you disagree with its substance. The alternative - a world of disapproving whispers, TV soundbites, and politicians who will say ANYTHING to score a paltry few points with their electorate - is far less worthy.
Erin, you are a true leader! I am so grateful for your speech, which was absolutely essential given the circumstances. Some people will try to frighten you about bridges burned, etc. but I have to ask: bridges to what, and to where? You've demonstrated that you conduct yourself based on ethical principles and the whole world needs this more than ever. The world needs you and people like you! Thank you again.

Sad that she used this great event to show how immature she is. Agree that we can often disagree with political views or opinions but to use your special time to lambaste a man like Vic Toews shows you actually learned very little that wasn't written in a book during your 4 years. You've had your 15 minutes so please go away now. Perhaps we'll soon find you handing us our change during the evenings at the Portage Place Parkade. U of W made a terrible mistake in their choice this time!
@URfuquedup Erin happens to be a friend of mine, and I can assure you that she will only continue to find herself in greater and greater positions of influence as time goes on. She is exceptionally hard working, articulate, and exalts a level of involvement with the issues of our time that is sorely missing from much of my generation. I am very proud of her and all the other members of our honors thesis class. 2010!
@URfuquedup "a man like Vic Toews" is a homophobe who is ready to put 10 year olds in jail... why wouldn't someone, who has the courage, stand up against those values when given an opportunity? Erin is destined for great things in her life, she is absolutely brilliant, gutsy, strong, and very hard-working. UW made the absolute best choice in naming Erin as the valedictorian and the wrong choice giving an "honorary" degree to an ignorant homophobe.
@JillianEnright I would imagine Erin as the type the Missile Silo Operators could hire, inadvertently give her "both" keys for launch and then forget that today is probably the day she goes off her meds. Erin probably so stressed during school had to be on meds... Scary woman...
This Valedictorian sounds like she's wound far too tight. Good luck with your piece of paper, too bad you'll have to put up or shut up in the future as for the rest of your life it's actually the real learning curve. Not everyone agrees with your choice to attack someone during an awards ceremony and many of us Business Owners will remember this for a long long time. Those who forget, will be reminded by others. Has this young woman ever worked anywhere or did she just wander around in a fog?
@uBeeZEROS Erin put herself aside & spoke on behalf of a huge majority of the students at the UW. Axworthy just wants Toews to give money to the UW, that's the only reason he gave him this "honorary" degree. If people just shut up rather than standing up for what they believe in then we'd still have slavery & being gay would still be illegal. I guess you'd rather sit idly by while the rights of other human beings are being trampled, as long as their not your own. We`re not all that selfish.
@JillianEnright if you know how to vote, then do it and I'll tell you right now though, the majority for this bizarre situation at what should have been a wonderful occasion for all-even Mr. Toews, was that this idiot ruined it with her classless act of arrogance-smug, spoiled and the "it's ONLY about me today so shut-up y'all and listen" Erin Larson.
Liberal dyke. Nuff said.

Not everyone agrees with your choice to attack someone during an awards ceremony and many of us Business Owners will remember this for a long long time. Those who forget, will be reminded by others. Has this young woman ever worked anywhere or did she just wander around in a fog?

Blacklisted by Winnipeg business owners?!!??? Hahahaha... sigh. Yes, I'm sure that Larson is going to lose plenty of sleep over that one.
