I've got XP and Vista Ultimate running on one machine. And I haven't moved most of my apps over to vista yet because it is a big task. Obviously not all the XP applications are compatible with vista aswell.
hey duncan. i'm actually running Windows XP SP2 right now on my 2 year old Dell and i'm gonna keep it on it maybe for a long time until the computer gets old. however, i'm in the market for a used laptop that i want to install Vista onto to use as my experimental machine. Microsoft came out with SP3 for XP and they should have kept it out longer. XP rocks but Vista is growing on me since SP1 came out. by the way...awsome vids man. keep them up.
The loss of XP isn't a huge deal for me. I recently installed linux(OpenSUSE 11) I find it works much better than xp. I have it setup with a dual boot with xp. I am only keeping xp so I can watch movies on netflix. If not for netflix I would ditch xp.
In some respects I think xp should be phased out. It might convince some people to get away from micro$oft and switch to mac or linux. And those not convinced will be once their vista box goes south

HELL YEA! I rcently installed OpenSUSE 11. I think more people should give linux a try. It can be a bit of a hassle to setup, but once it's setup, its WAY better than windows.
i think its very wrong that microsoft is stopping sales on XP. Vista is not a very good OS. I have had major problems with Vista with viruses and Spam.
yeh thats the support eg. security updates but he means the selling of it will be discontinued as of 30th June. I heard that windows 95 has only just stopped getting its security updates late last year

you should try the windows emulator Wine. That should get your windows apps working under linux. But really, for most things there is a linux version. The only reason I have a dual boot with xp is to watch movies on netflix. Everything else I can do from linux. Oh and by the way, I am assuming you know that you can download linux for free. I personally wouldn't bother paying for it.

No you havent thought things through... I own a windows vista computer and it's A-Mazing Windows vista is the future Windows xp is the past its old outdated and vista can do a heck of a lot more than... think about it directx 10 graphics... xp cant do that it can only do directx 9c... so you have way better graphics with directx 10 WHICH... u can only get with vista BECAUSE xp is so old it cant support graphics that good so the petitioners should SHUT UP and stop wining.you cant stop the future.

I will not "upgrade" to Vista under any circumstances. I don't feel like investing more money for hardware just to run it if I don't need it for the work I do. Vlite might be the answer here. Got Vista down to 700Meg on 1 CD by stripping out unwanted services, UAC, Defender etc. It now runs nearly as well as XP and no annoyances but still long live XP

XP is what i use...don't get me wrong there are some ok things they've added into vista that xp didn't have but 1st I hate the look of it compared to xp and from what I have done on a vista computer I don't see a way of making it look like xp with out modifying a file to make it look like that way like they did for the 98 look. 2nd If they just fixed xp so it worked even better and fixed any bugs left in it and maybe gave it a little more options for the look then I would by that.

Other have problems because they don't know how to use a computer, simple as that. I know, because I'm a professional for over 21 years and I've see more Windows users in my life than most other people and it's my experience that many think they know a lot, when they actually know very little. When you simply mention things like "IE7 protected mode" they already stare at you with open mouth.
Most people are sticking to XP because people are 'generally' resistant to change. XP is five years old - people don't want to change because its a timely process to get used to a new OS. Vista isn't as bad as people make it out to be, you need to spent a few hours and you'll be glad you upgraded.
Oh you mean the one he stated BEFORE using Vista that 'ill be going back to XP in a few hours'. You can't use that attitude, I believe in the notion that if your going to try something new out (especially an OS), give it a few days. OS's can be tweaked to your needs, as can Vista. If your determined from the start that your going to use XP, what use is it setting out on a new journey?
XP was the pinnacle of Microsoft's home-use operating systems.. VIsta is a new kernel called Longhorn, and it's horrible. built with that greasy C#.. I have one XP computer left, all the other's including my server I have switched over to Fedora 13, and it's WONDERFUL. The one XP computer seems to have been kissed by an angel or something, because it runs way better than it should, and never has problems.. Figure that. My server was running 2003 R2 Sp2 Enterprise until 2 days ago.
A new port of the vundo virus killed it in 10 minutes of contraction. I was running Avira and Malwarebytes and a firewall. It destroyed the boot sector of the drive, and now I have to run recovery on it. I loaded Fedora 13 on it, installed in 10 minutes and it only took me a minute or so to configure it with the roles I needed. There is no longer any reason to run a Microsoft operating system, no reason at all.
I am really happy they bumped it back, even if it is just for the Eee/Ultraportable crowd. Looks like people who want any other type of computer with XP might need to get it quick

i cant use vista or xp on my acer aspire one netbook.
both vista and windows 7 crash every 10 minutes on my machine rendering it completly unusable.
i have tried eeebuntu but the ath5k driver it uses makes the wireless not funtion properly.
windows xp is the only o/s that runs properly on my machine and my netbook is only 4 months old .
i dont think its fair to discontinue such a solid well built operating system .they should instead extend it and offer a few more service packs.

HELL YEA! I rcently installed OpenSUSE 11. I think more people should give linux a try. It can be a bit of a hassle to setup, but once it's setup, its WAY better than windows.

yeh thats the support eg. security updates but he means the selling of it will be discontinued as of 30th June. I heard that windows 95 has only just stopped getting its security updates late last year

calumccalum: Even if support is pulled, I will not change what OS I use. I've seen how terrible Vista is, and I for one am sick of having to put up with frequent crashes, blue screens, hangs, and error messages when I do fuck-all to upset the damn thing.
When 2014 does come, Windows XP stays, as will the older versions I have, because I am through with Windows.

purplemutantas: Thanks for the tip on Linux, but I bought myself a copy of one of their Xandros Desktop OSs last year, and I'm currently using it as a dual boot option with Windows XP. The only reason I keep XP at all is because of some of my software not being compatible with anything other than Windows and its WordPad and Notepad programs, but other than those I have no reason to continue using them.

you should try the windows emulator Wine. That should get your windows apps working under linux. But really, for most things there is a linux version. The only reason I have a dual boot with xp is to watch movies on netflix. Everything else I can do from linux. Oh and by the way, I am assuming you know that you can download linux for free. I personally wouldn't bother paying for it.

yes. because its more stable even on its first release. no like vista, a few days after its release to many countries, programmers and even home users detected security flaws and bugs in vista. now, m$ is patching with their so-called 'service packs'. so, im gonna stick with xp.

i have vista, there is a lot of problems. my cumputer came with vista and was my for it. there is a huge compatibility problem, i would like to downgrade to xp but hp want help. i've tired for months. when im runnung programs vista says program stopped working, and closes it, then the programs wont run. I HATE VISTA.....DO NOT UP GRADE.....YOU'LL BE UPSET.

I own a windows vista computer and it's A-Mazing Windows vista is the future Windows xp is the past its old outdated and vista can do a heck of a lot more than... think about it directx 10 graphics... xp cant do that it can only do directx 9c... so you have way better graphics with directx 10 WHICH... u can only get with vista BECAUSE xp is so old it cant support graphics that good so the petitioners should SHUT UP and stop wining.you cant stop the future.

I use an HP Pavilion DV9000 notebook PC, one of the newest computers out there (you know, the one they keep advertising for? I decided to get one) and it uses SATA drives so I'm stuck using Vista on it. I STAND BY MY STATEMENT, VISTA SUCKS.

Although Vista has quite a few nice points, I don't like it other than use for common online purposes, and even at that, there's some huge problems with software and drivers(I can't update my drivers very well. I'm trying to force my mum to buy her new PC now so we can purchase a copy of XP so she wont be regretting it or make sure she gets home premium. I'm going to add Ubuntu to this machine so I have at least some eyecandy.

I will not "upgrade" to Vista under any circumstances. I don't feel like investing more money for hardware just to run it if I don't need it for the work I do. I will either go to a Linux build, or hopefully the new open source ReactOS will be developed enough to switch to that. It's about ready for a beta version - alpha is available, and parrots XP almost exactly and will run almost all windows apps - unlike Linux. And ... FREE.

Save XP? It will be a cold day in hell before I do. Microsoft does not care about it's users. They managed to have people get every new OS, and Vista will be the same. I use Windows XP because I play games, that's it.

Vlite might be the answer here. Got Vista down to 700Meg on 1 CD by stripping out unwanted services, UAC, Defender etc. It now runs nearly as well as XP and no annoyances but still long live XP

i just recently bought a new desktop computer and it had windows vista business. vista aint that bad even if it has a few glitches. i just recently updated to windows vista business SP1 and now the glitches are gone. and soon vista will be better and more reliable and useful.

i got vista about a month ago when i got me new laptop and it's not that bad. i mean yeah there's a few glitches in vista in vista but i'm sure they'll adventually work it out of their system. vista does have better grpahics though than xp. my opinion is within the next year xp will pretty much be dead. like you said it's about 6 or 7 years old so it can't really last that much longer. it's going to take alot to maintain the xp system. no one really knows what's going to happen.

im in the same boat as far as uni work goes.
it seems silly tht people are mmoaning about xp being stopped. eventually it will be stopped. i imagine when XP came out alot of people were still using '98 and were still complaining. its just the way it goes.
i cant afford to upgrade to vista yet and my PC wouldnt be able to run it so to get vista i'd have to upgrade my comp first but i think i would move to vista. XP SP1 had lots of prblems just as vista has.

If microsft does not want the users to be unhappy, they should let people use XP.
Micosoft are a bunch of LOSERS!!! if they want to make money, they should keep xp because the majority uses xp. Its sooo dumb. They dont make sence, I refuse to upgrade to vista, I dont care about anything. Microsoft SUCKS.

XP is what i use...don't get me wrong there are some ok things they've added into vista that xp didn't have but 1st I hate the look of it compared to xp and from what I have done on a vista computer I don't see a way of making it look like xp with out modifying a file to make it look like that way like they did for the 98 look. 2nd If they just fixed xp so it worked even better and fixed any bugs left in it and maybe gave it a little more options for the look then I would by that.

Other have problems because they don't know how to use a computer, simple as that. I know, because I'm a professional for over 21 years and I've see more Windows users in my life than most other people and it's my experience that many think they know a lot, when they actually know very little. When you simply mention things like "IE7 protected mode" they already stare at you with open mouth.

Most people are sticking to XP because people are 'generally' resistant to change. XP is five years old - people don't want to change because its a timely process to get used to a new OS. Vista isn't as bad as people make it out to be, you need to spent a few hours and you'll be glad you upgraded.

Oh you mean the one he stated BEFORE using Vista that 'ill be going back to XP in a few hours'. You can't use that attitude, I believe in the notion that if your going to try something new out (especially an OS), give it a few days. OS's can be tweaked to your needs, as can Vista. If your determined from the start that your going to use XP, what use is it setting out on a new journey?

XP was the pinnacle of Microsoft's home-use operating systems.. VIsta is a new kernel called Longhorn, and it's horrible. built with that greasy C#.. I have one XP computer left, all the other's including my server I have switched over to Fedora 13, and it's WONDERFUL. The one XP computer seems to have been kissed by an angel or something, because it runs way better than it should, and never has problems.. Figure that. My server was running 2003 R2 Sp2 Enterprise until 2 days ago.

A new port of the vundo virus killed it in 10 minutes of contraction. I was running Avira and Malwarebytes and a firewall. It destroyed the boot sector of the drive, and now I have to run recovery on it. I loaded Fedora 13 on it, installed in 10 minutes and it only took me a minute or so to configure it with the roles I needed. There is no longer any reason to run a Microsoft operating system, no reason at all.

I am really happy they bumped it back, even if it is just for the Eee/Ultraportable crowd. Looks like people who want any other type of computer with XP might need to get it quick
