In the 1950s, the Air National Guard entered the jet age by replacing its propeller fleet with F-86 jets, plus built newer, more permanent facilities at the airport. The 1950s brought substantial growth to general aviation at the airport and local industries. By 1957, the annual payroll of airport companies reached an impressive $43 million and the airport experienced its final name change to Van Nuys Airport. Residential growth also continued.
The City of Los Angeles Zoning Commission allowed developers to build 150 new homes in areas surrounding the airport. In 1959, completion of the Sherman Way underpass enabled extension of the main runway from 6,000 to 8,000 feet as VNY ranked 25th in operations nationwide.
The airport became a vital defense-manufacturing center during the war. In 1944, a joint venture between the U.S. Navy and Lockheed Corporation created an aircraft modification facility known as the Navy Lockheed Plant.
In the meantime, Hollywood continued to use the airport for filming, most notably when scenes from the classic Casablanca were filmed at the airport. And one day, the entertainment industry that had become so important to Metropolitan Airport discovered a young woman on an aircraft assembly line. Her name? Marilyn Monroe.
Located about 20 miles north of today’s LAX, amid 80 acres of trees and farmland, Metropolitan Airport – with its initial biplane hangar fees of $35 per month and landing fees of 50 cents – was a place where pioneering pilots who had faith in the future of aviation could fly their “new-fangled flying machines.”

That sister of the Warner Bros I won't say her full name she changed it to, but her middle name is Dooley. She is actually related to the man Warner Brother's Studios was founded upon, that's her brother, the younger one of the two originals. That is her brother.I have a studio located at 16000 Strathern Street,Van Nuys,Ca.91406 and it is in this same area now where this area used to be all Military AA Army Airforce.American Airlines was partly born in this area. Burbank, Bob Hope, Howard Hughes
Howard Hughes in 1931 The Caddo Company he owned and created. Howard built many business ventures and if the comments here held any validity by the persons actually reading from the true books of history about Howard Hughes and not myth of gossip and rumors, then you would know who Howard Hughes was. He was as a powerful man as the brothers WARNER. Warner Brothers. The studios. Read about Warner Bros. There was a sister. That sibling works for Van Nuys Airport NOW. Changer her name though.
Howard Hughes isn't a badd anything, (Commenter above) Howard Hughes was a good business man and inventor. He loved his country and the people he competed with. He loved making a good life out of entertaining others, this showed in all of the wonderful events, business ventures and plans he was involved in. Caddo Field, Reseda,Ca was just a small airfield Mr. Howard Hughes built in 1928-29 and he built many other things with the army in the area as CADDO Field 34 13 10N 118 31 12W , Licensed .
@ :24 - "The fire set @ the accident was due to motor failure shortly after his take- off"? He flew it for 1 hr. 45 mins. so I guess this means that the oil leak that caused the propeller to malfunction started then.
What a legend. When I seen the Aviator I thought It must have been exagerated but in fact its the opposite. They could even have made the film twice the length.Unfortunate how he ended up but possibly not his fault.
One of his many fascinating exploits was building a $500 million ship to dredge up minerals from the sea bottom. Yeah, right! It came out a few years later that he was being bankrolled and was a schill for the U, S, government going after a top secret Russian nuclear sub which was dead on the sea bottom.
He develeoped a phobia against germs plus he caught the clap and that really screwed him up.He burned his clothes in his yard after he found out he had the clap. The planes crashes caused him alot of pain from the injuries then he started taking pain killers and got hooked, then his people taking care if him neglected the hell out of him.Downhill from there
This crash was the pivotable moment in Hughes life. He was COMPLETELY normal prior to this crash...DON'T believe the bogus movie. All his future problems were caused by painkillers and other drugs he took from 1946 onward.
"In the 1930s, close friends reported he was obsessed with the size of peas, one of his favorite foods, and used a special fork to sort them by size. While producing The Outlaw, Hughes became obsessed by a minor flaw in one of Jane Russell's blouses, claiming that the fabric bunched up along a seam and gave the appearance of two nipples on each of Russell's breasts. He was reportedly so concerned by the matter as to write a detailed memorandum to the film crew on how to fix the problem."
he didnt really bribe nixon but he contributed like 350 grand in a "slush" fund which is campaign contribution money that doesnt have to be accounted for. and the cause of his mental illness was tertiary syphillis and simple OCD(obsessive compulsive disorder)
One of the houses that he crashed belonged to hollywood actress, Rosemary DeCamp. She's most famously remembered as the mother in "Junge Book" back in "42. Howard paid for all of the damages out of his own pocket and all was forgiven. Howard Hughes, gotta love that fine man.
oh i saw this scene from Di Caprio's movie. but kinda disappointed they didn't show when he started became mentally-ill, like staying in his room and no bath , no shaving , and eating only chocolates and milk and became really , really dirrrrty.
in the movie "the aviator" they did , but mostly implied ,, the scenes where he locked himself in his private cinema , he didnt shave , drank milk and pissed in the old bottles . the repetitve orders he barked hints at the start of his mental decline ..
No not the Hercules. It was his other experimental plane XF-11 and wasnt his only one. He had a second XF-11 which he modified the second propeller out (he had 2 propellers for each engine) and when the air force canceled there contract he was left with a very expensive prototype.
The plane, an experimental model Hughes had developed called the XF-11, had experienced propeller reversal on the right engine after taking off. The H-4 Hercules (Spruce Goose) still survives in Evergreen Aviation Museum located in McMinnville, Oregon.

Either way, you can deny that the Aviator movie glamourized this crash in favour of Hughes. You can't tell he crashed into the middle of Beverly Hills without someone getting squished.

That's not true. He was ill before the crash. Read a book. Anyone that knew him stated this.

I did read a book, the only book worth reading is 'HUGHES' by Richard Hack.
Watch the Terry Moore interview here on Youtube, Hughes was 43 when he met her! She wouldn't have been interested in a psychotic spaz!
