Probably the only example in Rock history of a band choosing to be the voice of a country instead of chasing American exposure. It could never have worked out better.
@heterosexualman. first of all i can't believe you're the one who owns that handle. second i think you may be right. but i haven't double checked your assertion yet. either way kudos man. that's huge. if you haven't already check out west wind cookie factory.
whats up with comparing the hip to the doors.two different genres.plus jim morrison was a fucking drunk pretentious coward who hid behind vague lyrics ,like some fucking weird goth kid.this band has been going longer than the doors and almost longer the jims life .guys like gord got real art real poetry real stories and pack a set and dont wimp out to join the 27 club
You'd think more people would know about them from playing Woodstock. Then again it's a good thing that Americans haven't swiped the Hip away from us. They stole Hockey and bought out The Bay but thank god the Hip are still 100% Canadian.
@royalnash And you're probably one of these dorks that likes Kid Rock or Shania Twain or Lady Gaga or Britney Spears or Aerosmith or name your stupid popular band of the moment. Some band in the Rock and Roll Hall of Shame in Cleveland, OH. They for some reason don't feel like the greatest rock band in history, Foghat, doesn't deserve induction in to their R&R Hall of Shame.
IMO The Hip were one of the highlights of Woodstock 99. They really brought the true spirit of the original Woodstock to their show and were a sign of good things to come for the festival until bands like Limp Bizkit destroyed it.
@bwho No. Not at all. What a vibe! Loved the Canadian flags and the intensity of the band and the crowd at NOON! The opening with Grace, Too was great. I worked a good part of Woodstock (I live 2 miles away), but this was my chosen break period where I got to see the Hip, Counting Crowes and Dave Matthews Band.
LMAO Love the Canadian flags going, Kingston boy here, always loved the Hip. Great rock 'n Roll not enough bands out there just playing the real thing anymore.
The boogies-blues break at the end of this video while Gord rants/raps/blabs is pristene in its rock and roll blues beauty. You might not think of da blues as related to The Hip but they really are a blues-based rock band. Great tune!
yeah wildthing said it all, all Canadian tv and radio stations have to play a percentage of Canadian content, thus, any band that isnt the flavor of the month probably wouldn't be aired in the States as they do here. still hard to believe "New orleans is sinking" was banned in the states during Katrina, why on earth would any American radio station play that during such a crisis.
gord downie is so energetic, funky, and talented its ridiculous (the whole band too of course... long haired dude rocks out, i love it!) seeing all the canadian flags flying in the air must make it so worth it for them! THE HIP RULES!
so fucking canadian. i may be in a metal band but i sure as hell appreciate good music no matter where its from but when its home grown its even sweeter.
have a friend from the us never heard of the hip. got him into them and he saw them about 5 times while he was up here playing juniors.
THE HIP!!!!!!!!!! keep rocking guys love you guys cheers!!!!
I live in Buffalo, NY, and for the life of me I cant understand how The Hip is not huge down here. They are one of the best, if not the best band in the world.
i dont really think they worry about a huge american following.,.they are canadian thru and thru..cud be cause americans cant appreciate them like canadians can due to all the canadian content in there music..
In the U.S., the closer you are to the border, the more likely you know them. Take Day For Night. I can think of an album, also released in 1994, by a certain U.S. quintet that was the 2nd-fastest-selling record at the time, but, I think that was more of a carryover from that band's previous album from 1993. Day For Night shits all over that other band's 1994 LP, but, for whatever reason it never took off in the U.S. like I thought it would. Same goes for both bands' 1998 LP's.
@Fakename70 "closer you are to the border," I live in Alabama, and not only have I heard of them for over a decade, I own a few of their albums. The only real setback for the band is the radio stations never played their music. Thats a common setback for bands in the states, as it is abroad. They should video tape a show in my state, sell it, and I bet you their southern following would triple in a about a year. Just ask Train and John Mayer.
@zzRider As a Canadian, I think it's awesome that someone from Alabama likes the Hip. I've travelled the world and whenever I meet a Hip fan abroad, I feel so proud.
the hip rule...yet ol gord is a weirdo..lol..saw them at gm place in vancouver and he sat in front of fay's kit with a towel over his head and spun in circles mumbling some gibberish...hahah good times
the hip play a great show. they come to Vancouver a couple of times a year and no matter how many times i see them i always keep going to their concerts. they get the crowd pumped and into it every show
the Canadian Doors? Please. The Doors sucked and The Hip Rules!!! If ANYTHING, The Hip are the Canadian Eagles, but I wouldn't be able to defend that comment. The Hip, Hockey, and great fishing; the top three things this American loves about our neighbor to the North.
ha well ur right, u can't defend that eagles comment, or the doors one in my opinion, but ya hip and canada are great, but i hav to say that it's impossible to compare the hip to anyone. The Hip are The Hip. They're their own breed, eh?
they're huge here in Buffalo, too bad they're not as cheap as before. lyrics are really good and those who know know. might sound weird if u don't know who they are.
In Canada, every knows and loves The Tragically Hip. They are a fantastic band who have come out with great songs for the last 25 years and are still great. I saw them live and they're great!
I didn't hear of the Hip until I went to school in Potsdam, NY (practically the Canadian border), they are HUGE around the area. We are trying to get them to play our school, but they ask a fair amount of money.
