I'm not Welsh (and I don't particularly care for some of Charlotte Church's life choices) but I cannot help but be moved to tears everytime I hear this. I've tried in vain to figure out why this is. Its not difficult to see why all Welshmen seem to grow two foot taller when this is sung. I think, perhaps, it is the sheer pride that so obviously fills these Welsh guys that touches me. They have every right - what a fantastic nation and heritage.
@mackshayster - And so you became one of the many idiots she was referring to in her comments. I would point out to you that her comments make a lot of sense if one actually understood and listened to them. Her comments were not unfeeling, rude, or improper.
@mackshayster Cont'd - She was stating her feelings on the way people were perceiving the incident. How people were picking up debris to SELL or profit off of it....those people were RUDE AND UNCARING. Or how people were overestimating the incident and experience...example: 'Yeah, my neighbour's dog's owner's sister's dog was involved, but he got out just in time'. - What? A dog? Really? Come on, 3,000+ people die and a person is worried about a dog? Come on. That person lost perspective.
@mackshayster Contd- So her comments were actually quite insightful. Which is what is needed at a critical time and deeply emotional incident as 9/11. She should be applauded for "seeing" the lunacy that was going on after...not ridiculed for it. Of the firefighters and policeman who helped out that day she said this, "The New York fire-fighters displayed remarkable courage and sacrifice every day and their work and efforts at Ground Zero are an extension of that."
UK, and it's constituent geographic/cultural parts, are too cool. As an american, I am an unreconstructed anglophile ( and celtophile and whatever). The welsh are great singers as well as great warriors in wartime.
@richardeast : It's none of my business, but I have to say that it would be good imo if the UK remained strong and unified, instead of breaking apart into a few very small countries. Wouldn't it be sufficent if Wales got more control over its local affairs, rather than breaking completely off from the UK?
@WolfytheWolf5667 who gives a fuck about the usa? this is welsh - wales. I went to america in 1995 Portland, and the local poplace didnt know what wales was.....

@theirondukesboy because it is a Welsh song? Originally penned in Welsh. Converted to English for the sake of the English. She is Welsh, what language do you think she prefers to sing a Welsh song in?
I cannot believe how many foolish remarks are made on so many beautiful songs and anthems. The music is uplifting, something we all need in our lives. In Benoni, South Africa, we always had a Welsh Male Voice Choir, and oh, the joy they brought! To all out there - you should just be saying - Thank you for the music, the songs that are being sung!! Modern music hasn't a chance against music of this calibre!
I live and let live. I'm Welsh not British. But if outsiders Want to dictate my life or my families future or my UK friends( Ireland Scotland or England), Then i'll fight to the death as will my family. We might tolerate the situation now, but don't cross the line because we will stick together and fight to the death dirty s we have done in the past. . grimmest117 is right , leave us alone or you'll wish heel had you first!
Theories that humans originated in Africa, use some rather specious DNA evidence to prove their case. DNA sciences are still in their infancy relatively speaking. It is quite possible further discoveries may turn DNA science on it's head and change everything "we thought we knew"! The same goes for anthropology. there are a lot of place on the earth left to explore! Are these the same scientist who were caught red handed "cooking their books" to "prove" the man made global warming theory.
@Grimmest117 Even so, Britain has been invaded by so many different groups of people (the Romans, the Vikings, the Saxons and the Normans) that ultimately most people in this country are going to be descended from 'immigrants' one way or another!
@Briselance I'll tell you 'so what' - so it's completely pointless to complain about there being too many immigrants when ultimately we are ALL descended from 'immigrants' one way or another!
And still we have all evolved into different ethnic groups naturally. All men are created equal by nature, and nature have also seen fit to create different ethnic groups or nations if you will. These nations are worth protecting. All nations should be free and sovereign but also be friends with eachother. This does not however include mass immigration who does nothing more than to destroy cultures and create tension and racial violence. No my good sir, let all nations be free!
Where did you read me "tar all immigrants"? Interesting how one can interpret a support for ALL nations (In other words people of all colors and creed) as "tar of all immigrants". Explain yourself, sir!
KL437 - Yes, it's sung in Welsh--don't know about the "old Welsh" part. And not all of us Americans are ignorant--you obviously aren't or you wouldn't have known enough to ask this question ;-)
@reinierchristiaan Men of Harlech stop your dreaming Can't you see their spear points gleaming See their warrior pennants streaming To this battlefield Men of Harlech stand ye steady It cannot be ever said ye For the battle were not ready Stand and never yield From the hills rebounding Let this song be sounding Summon all at Cambria's call The mighty force surrounding Men of Harlech on to glory This will ever be your story Keep these burning words before ye Welshmen will not yield ~♥~
Ancestry.com is a place where all you Welshmen might want to visit. I heard the other day that the Parish records, 1700-1950, were coming on line for digital download soon. Many American are part Welsh, Scots, English, Swedish, Finnish, French, Irish, Scots Irish. and more. I AM. Owen Tudor born 1397 in Snowdon, my 16 Great Granfather married Henvy V widow Catherine of Valoise. We have many people who cannot track their ancestry, but others we can. Go Wales
She was a young girl when she sang this song. Of course she went on to make all the mistakes of the young, that doesn't take away anything from her talent.
@frankantoniomartin , Make me proud to be partly Welsh, the family descends from the Welsh Kings back to the year 300, Owen Tudor is my 16th Great Grandfather, he married Catherine who was Harry the Kings, Henry V wife after Harry died.
Harry is a first cousin and Sir John Grey with 26 Lances was with Harry At Agincourt. I really like Charlotte..
@progressiverebel right mate, i'm welsh myself and there fore i'm proud of my roots but the concept of descendants doesn't really work as even going back to the year 800 you end up havign more anceastors than there have ever been humans on earth at one time. it's something liek 80 billion anceastors at that point as you have parents who each have parents whpo each have parents... the whole grain of rice on a chess board trick :( sorry to burst your bubble :(
@frazzledazzler , At 24 living in a small country you have much yet to see of the world. You talk about bursting my bubble. At 7 generations a person has a total of 364 ancestors, at 8 gen it increases to 620. But within me they still live. And since I know some of them and where they lived its ok. Queen Elizabeth Winsor is my 9th cousin. I know the facts and I know who many of the people were. They were good people
@progressiverebel the amount of the world i've seen doesn't really have much to do with this, no offense mate. The point of this is that the human race is much older than just 8 generationgs with the life expectency of anyone living pre 1800 being around about 30-40 at most, the amount of generation increase dramatically and it's not like someone lives 40 years and then the next lives 40 years people tended to breed every 15- 17 years so that's like 6 generation a centuary
@frazzledazzler now that's what 1700 years of that going on, you're related to Y brenaeth as much as you're related to the servents who served them and some anglo saxon bastard living 1000 miles away. nationalism is a nice concept but anceastory logically doesn't help it out unfortunalty. Definative proof is that there's more genetic similarity between a man living in china and myself than there is between two apes in the same family, we all come from the same small group of apes.
@frazzledazzler That's right - it's physically impossible to have that many ancestors, therefore the only way it could be true is with a lot of loose sleeping around outside of conventional marriage. Hence, if you go reasonably far back, most people are related to each other, however distantly.
-- That'samazing. All those singers in the back, with the years of experience they already have, get to serve as back-up vocals to this little girl who according to:
YouTube ID = CChurchFan
† "She was 11 or 12 when she did the "Men of Harlech" rendition."
-- I just imagine them saying, "Who gets to be this little girl who gets to star IN FRONT of us? Just WHO is she?" And then at the end when she hits that last note they say, "#OMG, THAT'S who she is. Amen sisters & brothers."
A (Cornwall-born) American hero named Rick Rescorla oft sang this song when under fire. He sang it to rally his men in the Battle of the Ia Drang Valley (Vietnam '65) and was also heard singing it as he ran back into the World Trade Center for the last time, dying as he tried to save as many people as possible during the attacks of 9/11. Rescolrla was credited with saving many hundreds of employees of the firm he was employed by.A TRUE hero and an honorable bloodline....
@jrmcanine Oh my god ! What a man of incredible courage and fortitude . I would love to have met him and shared a few beers and the like . A man in all manner !!
@MikeSPx24bj9 sir, cornwall born means that he was born in the area of britain known as the duchy of cornwall it is just under wales and it is the farthest west of england.
@jrmcanine I don't know about the figures you quote, or about his singing this song, (not saying you are wrong), but I can back you up on the fact that Sargeant Rescorla was a hero in the Ia Drang and that he did indeed die pulling people from the World Trade Center. I didn't fight with him, but I heard about him. Semper Fi, Sarge.
@jrmcanine There were no american heroes in Vietnam... In that war the most of the US soldiers were only poor victims of a warmongering and exploiter America, sent to die by a clique of generals and politicians, servants of the worst economic interests. And some (thankfully the few) of those soldiers were nothing but was a bloodthirsty murderer... the only true hero of that war was the Vietnamese people.
@hpl00064 You are a very disrespectful oaf and an insult to memory of all those young men who were sent and did not return from that war. Not that your comments have anything to do with Men of Harlech, of which you are defilitely not one.
@cd1690 Yeah, the truth hurts ... especially those ignorant Americans, always ready to die and kill for their masters will fill their wallets ... Fortunately, in the USA there were millions of intelligent people who were opposed to this fucking war...but apparently they were not enough, given that today thousands of men die in Iraq for the interests of the oil ... Wake up you idiots!

The song with its choir of Welsh male voices is famously associated with Cardiff City Football Club, in the English Championship.
Cardiff City iFC is known as The Bluebird of Wales.
It sports a Welsh flag on its blue shirt, as well as a dragon and a leek on its crest.

Nothing beats a Welsh male voice choir - unless you stick a soprano in front of them and belt out a classic like this. _o_

My favourite part would be the point of intervention of Charlotte's voice at 2:46 with the male background. What a fantastic contrast!

Why aren't Charlotte Church and Gavin Henson like Posh and Becks?
Because she can sing and he can take a penalty.

March ye men of Harlech bold, Unfurl your banners in the field,
Be brave as were your sires of old, And like them never yield!
What tho' evry hill and dale, Echoes now with war's alarms,
Celtic hearts can never quail, When Cambria calls to arms.

Back then her voice was so unaffected and pure. Angelic.
A voice that most of the adult soprano wannabes would love to have.

Never thought of "Men of Harlech" being sung by anything other than an all male Chorus, but Charlotte Church has definately changed my mind.

Charlotte had a fabulous voice but I think ciggies have probably affected it adversely by now. She was fantastic here though.

And some (thankfully the few) of those soldiers were nothing but was a bloodthirsty murderer... the only true hero of that war was the Vietnamese people.
hpl00064 1 year ago
