  • Well gee thanks for that review. It's nice to know that this legendary album which has captivated people's imaginations for decades, been bootlegged multiple ways, been begged for it's release, took the Beach Boys to a whole new level of sophistication, was compared to the Beatles, and got stellar reviews and praise wasn't really that good. Thank you. Thank god for you.

  • Glad to see that you actually like the album but you could benefit from doing your home work a little more throughly before you do reviews as your knowledge on this subject is somewhat erratic all the way down to nonsensial.

`Smile``not having the same legendary status as `Pet Sounds``

    You`ve got to be kidding

  • Do you even like music?

  • FUCK YOU

  • Listening to the way most of the songs segue into the others (as if it were supposed to sound like that) doesn't really sound like a random order to me. Brian and Van Dyke did after all write the songs as snippets and they could have been arranged in any order regardless of whether it was released in 67' or now. Also, Brian did technically finish the album, but on his own in 04', and again with Van Dyke's help, wrote lyrics to those unfinished songs you referred to.

  • look is a great song!

  • Do you enjoy being a walking stereotype?

  • i wish i was as cool as this guy thinks he is, i need to buy some glasses and a stupid fucking t shirt that only his friends think is mildly amusing. and blah blah blah smile....blah blah blah brian wilson.... blah blah blah... i have no fucking idea what i'm talking about. wankstain

  • its like not necessary to FRICKING RAMBLE AND REPEAT YOURSELF FOR THE ENTIRE FRICKING VIDEO! You think Your no music critic, and if you were, no one would listen to you!

  • Oh one other thing I know people are teasing you cos you look like a hipster from Williamsburg or whatever but if you really don't know where it is or what they're talking about you're fucking retarded.

  • For someone who claims to be a completist you certainly didn't do any research on this. This doesn't claim to be the finished version of smile which is why it's called the smile sessions. The only finished version of smile out there is the one Brian Wilson released in 2004. I don't have a problem with you liking this album or not. You're entitled to your opinion just like everyone else. You just come off as a pretentious know it all who actually doesn't know shit.

  • The only thing that's not complete is the lead vocals on some of the tracks, and one or two musical passages which connected songs. The short songs or "feels" served as thematic bridges to weave the album together the same way the songs are individually woven together. How can an album that has three coherent movements be "scattered with randomly placed songs and parts"? I also think the reviewer had the wrong idea about what the 2004 SMiLE actually was. Apparently "completionist" is a form of

  • I quite enjoy the incompleteness and messiness of Smile that this reviewer refers to. It's quite in the spirit of the content of the album. The spirit of Smile being playful, eclectic, collage, innovation, and creativity. I think everyone should have their own masters of the tracks to comb through and rearrange as they so choose. To me, this album is one of the very best examples of virtuosity in pop music. arttttttt!!!

Of course the reviewer is entitled to every opinion he would like.

  • do your research, slacker! i agree a bit, but you need to learn more about what makes this music important. you talk very little about the concepts or recording techniques which advanced music at the time. and it did. it is very much *not* an album of its time, despite all the "muddy" (nebulous assessment) sound. you lend no insight, as a music "completist", i encourage you to learn how music is made before you give another review--the most important aspect of this album. sonic jewelry.

  • Absolutely pathetic review. "It's Unfinished, shorter songs mean unfinished" bla bla bla....

THIS IS THE FINAL FINISHED VERSION. Stop blathering about how it isn't.

  • smile is great, wonderful, magic. thank you

  • This is not a great review. You repeated yourself over and over. Anyone who is a BW or BB fan knows that the album is nothing but snipits. That is the whole point. I LOVE the album and the sessions. The only thing missing for me are the vids taken of the smile sessions. Now THAT would be WONDERFUL! :o)

  • Your review needed better research. In fact, some of your misconceptions would've been cleared up if you had read the liner notes.

  • this review's ok its just the guy's look I think people are objecting to

  • Man, I don't think I can agree with the spirit of your evaluation. What I do know is that the music from SMiLE makes me feel something perfectly amazing.

  • Your a moron hipster and you have no clue what you are talking about. Do your research you dumb fuck. Go listen to some crappy electronic band from Williamsburg. You suck!

  • @Milkshed20 well that was unnecessarily mean. I guess it takes some practice to not be immature.

    wheres williamsburg?

  • I have to agree with you on only ONE point...Pet Sounds IS the greatest album! Other then that I think you spent WAY too much time picking apart The Smile Sessions. Who really CARES that some of the songs are only 40 seconds long, and who cares what ORDER the songs were originally in?? It's great music...end of story. Doesn't sound to me like you're a true BB fan but if you ARE...stop worrying about how complete or INcomplete the record is...sit back, and JUST ENJOY IT! Oh yeah...and SMiLE!!!

  • Wow, you are incorrect about a lot of things.

  • Has anyone here checked out Brian Wilson's SMiLE from 2004? It is, by far, the closest thing to Wilson's vision as possible and is an amazing, glorious feast for the ears. I think that listening to that first would give listeners a greater appreciation for the SMiLE Sessions, which are essentially incomplete tracks and different versions of the same songs. A good album, but incomplete. Still worth a listen, especially for fans. But the 2004 SMiLE is sublime.

  • @GradiusMojo You know it's funny I was going to trade in my copy of the 2004 "SMiLE" when I bought the set on Nov. 1st, but the other day I put on the '04 version and I was so glad I didn't. I agree with you, listen to 2004 "SMiLE" first, then indulge in the 2011 "SMiLE" for a bit, then COME BACK to the '04 version and I swear you will hear it with new ears.

  • Thanks for taking the time to appreciate SMiLE. I'm not saying anything negative because you're entitled to your own opinion but you were off on a few factual things. Love the Beach Boys!

  • Hey! Thanks for your review on this. I've been curious about what other music lovers were saying about this. I think you argued your point well, but I don't see eye to eye with you on everything. Actually, I don't agree with most of it. To me, an album is a manifestation of what is going on in an artists mind at the time they work on it. So for me the first 19 songs of disk one were "SMiLE", because it completely showed where Brian's head was at. Fragmented, incomplete and tripped out.

  • Smile no es un album no terminado. Ya fue terminado en el año 2004, pero parece que la gente no quiere darse cuenta.

  • You mention that Brian Wilson put out an album in the 90's with stuff from the Smile sessions. He did not. There were songs and recordings that were used on "Friends" and 20/20 in the late 60's and "Surf's Up" in 1971 but not in the 90's. The only "SMiLE" era recordings officially released was in 1993 on the "Good Vibrations" box set. Please, if you are going to review a release please get your facts straight. At least do some research before hitting record.

  • In the 3 physical formats you really have to look at this collection as more of a documentary instead of a collections of songs.

  • I will admit that the deluxe version is really intended for the Beach Boys / Brian Wilson fans first and music lovers second. The thing you are missing in your review is the fact that this is really an education in how Brian worked with the other Beach Boys in creating the harmonies as well as working with the session musicians in creating the arrangements. Some pre-planned, and others created on the spot. By not acknowledging that fact, you are unfairly selling this collection short.

  • I understand that your given an opinion but some of what you are saying is not factual. Brian Wilson, Mark Linnett or Alan Boyd did no re-recording on this box set. What you are hearing is from the actual session tapes.

As for being a completeist, than listen to the 2004 release "Brian Wilson Presents Smile" which is the definitive version of the "idea" of what SMiLE was supposed to be.

  • fuck off

  • I agree with your whole review. I got the vinyl copy of SMiLE the day after it came out and have listened to it about 4 times and I was struck at how muddy and incoherent it is. Yes, knowing the history of it makes it worth listening to, but I definitely think that if someone isn't into psychedelic music or abstract art stuff then they would hate this album. To me,it's basically a trip and you have to be in the mood for it. My favorite song from this mix of SMiLE is "Wind Chimes", what's yours?

  • @okiefolkie wow..I was logged in on my father's YT account when I commented. lol I guess I lose the game.

  • i'd give it a little more time.

and congrats on taking a bold stand. i dont really agree, but thats bold of you.

also: totally agree on pet sounds. best. album. ever. period.

  • ur a raver but ur listening 2 smile? stick 2 stupid electro lol

  • @NEWGUY562 When did I say i was a raver? if I said that, it had to be in sarcasm. As a sidenote, typing with numbers as words doesn't help your argument.

  • @culturetease ur shirt says it. lol. there is no argument. i'm guessing ur not much of a beach boys fan.

  • @NEWGUY562 His shirt says I ROVE RICE . moron.

  • @SmokinChiva (feeling dumb) :p

  • Its called the Smile 'Sessions'. Not the Smile Album. its a compilation of 'sessions' which justifies it's messiness.

  • @SabrinaIannuzzi Yeah i know it's called the Smile Sessions. Hence the, like, title of the video.

  • What do you know have you ever had a project you never finished this isnt your kinda music anyways your probably into that emo stuff

  • @xxluckyone7 god this comment is bad. You generalize my opinion on music, and claim that its incompleteness has no bearing on the albums quality (which is ludicrous).
