I believe that the upper eschelons of the neo-cons (Karl Rove, Dick Cheney) go about inventing enemies in order to form social order (think of the writings of Carl Schmidt, one of the original neocon theorists), and for geo-politicla reasons. Their perspective seems to be a mix of Plato and Hobbes, and hey seem to view themselves as a natural aristocracy cynically manipulate the traumatized into wars and other horrendous projects.
I think Cheney, Rove, and the neo-con "Philosopher Kings" who spew out these "noble lies" are not traumatized as much as they are psychopathic. Psychopaths merely work on solving problems, and since emotions do not register, millions of people can die and it will not affect them at all. For more on this, read "Snakes in Suits".
I think they would prefer you only had an attention span of a couple of minutes...anything more and you might learn something or have an inspired thought. ;?)
Hysterical Buddhism? Isn't the definition of Buddhism's middle way the practice of non-extremism? I can maybe see how prolonged meditation can be described as extreme, but hysterical? Please explain.
Buddhists spend their lives meditating at temples to keep themselves from doing things and creating karma in the hopes to someday attain nirvana... that's hysterical.
Fascinating and wonderful talk, Stef! I recognize so much of my former self in your description of Republicans... It feels amazing to be free of that mental oppression.
Technically correct - though the major parties have undergone at least 3-4 complete reinventions since then to the point where the names have become meaningless. If AJ were alive today, he would either be a Goldwater Republican or a Libertarian.
In your coming analysis of the democrats I'd wish to see your reasoning why it doesn't seem to matter which side is in charge.
Republicans and democrats - it's exactly like sports. It's something the people can follow and cheer for their team, but the rivalry is meaningless beoynd itself. The forces and special interests that steer a country have little to do with the show that is known as the "politics".
I'm looking forward to the Democrat perspective. You made them sound positive and it didn't seem like Republicans had positive traits. The dichotomy of being humorous or being serious sounds like such an easy choice. Of course you are calling it a false dichotomy but you are speaking of the 'Ideals' anyways.
Got any good political book recommendations you think don't play into these false dichotomies?
Sorry I couldn't listen to the whole thing! I have just one comment:
It used to be true that Republicans were the party that tended toward fear-mongering. In my opinion, as least in the US, the Democrats these days have taken that mantle away. Look at global warming, "destruction of the planet" -type stuff that is just waaaay over the top, IMO.
Interesting and pretty much true deconstruction of republicans! I'm intimately acquainted with more than a few of them. Sometimes I can't help but think that they would benefit from just a tab or two of acid. Looking forward to the Democrat video!
Interesting. I don't know any republicans personnally (I'm a Canadian, and live in an area where less than 20% vote Conservative), but I suspect they are a far more diverse a group than what you describe, and that what you are describing represents more the authoritarian / fundamentalist / militarist type than the Libertarian types such as Ron Paul.
I thought republicans were defined more by their relationship to vested interests. The very nature of conservatism suggests their getting a good deal - they want things to stay exactly as they are so they can grow more chins.
There's only one party I respect.
The Rent is Too Damn High Party.

@Blissentia just cause popular opinion says its so doesnt make it so
just cause their called experts doesnt mean their experts
just cause media says popular opinion agrees doesnt mean they agree
just cause ur religion says so doesnt make it so
just cause someone says there is no evidence doesnt make it true
just cause something is shocking doesnt mean its crazy
just cause its status quo doesnt mean it has to stay that way

Why is this video so slow? Even w/o the HQ checked the buffer rate is like 10-to-1. Chalk this up as a user complaint.

Ron paul is a republican, what do you think about him?

He's done a few videos on Ron Paul, it's easy to find his stance.

Ron Paul does a really good job of not curtailing the growth of the state...

Why is this in HQ? lotta lag especially on the weekends just for a verbal video.

You can turn off the high quality, but the reason I leave it on is because it makes the sound quality better for those who have the bandwidth...

But us people with slower internets have to go through the grueling process of pushing the HQ button! Slave driver!
