  • we all have those thing we turn red about we all have those things we could take back its all about liveing every day to make up for it if i chose to life for ever how would it be im sertain i wouldt have any fillers i just didnt do any thing important .......nice songs

  • i love how he sounds almost exactly the same live as he does on his CD's......can hardly say the same for most music nowadays

  • Lord, what I would pay to see this man in concert.

  • @imreallyserious Well, I mean, you would kinda have to XD

  • @imreallyserious I've been to plenty of concerts in my life. Metal, Punk, Indie, Pop Punk, Electronic, Raves, Etc. John Darnielle puts on the best damn show out of all of them. If he is ever playing in your area do what you can to see him. I'm having withdrawals and I went to one of his shows a couple months ago.

  • Thank you for posting this :) I love being able to see his hands handle the guitar, he's so emotional when he performs but his left hand is always so calm.

  • powerful

  • great

  • Comment removed

  • This man is inspiration in FLESH!

  • It almost seems like a crime that Darnielle had to sit for the whole set.

  • wow that was powerful towards the end. alotta emotion. i like tht

  • Lucky finds the coolest things...you're a lucky guy to have Lucky Oceans behind you...your songs are beautiful and your delivery is SO GENUINE...LOVE it!

  • 2 people didn't know what to do without you.

  • cerebral and visceral, melancholic and beautiful......saw him live at neumo's (thanks for putting up with the smoke!)...just great...he gives a rich and rewarding performance (much like Mike Doughty; another great singer-songwriter).

  • i originally found the band after hearing cotton on weeds and i have grown to love john more and more each time i listen to his music

  • @ TtothePak Probably because if your a mountain goats fan you are actually intelligent and open minded. I mean that must be why this band isn't huge, sure this is Indy, but the general public must not be smart enough to see the musical genius in John. It's OK though, John's music isn't about that. It centers around pure talent, RAW emotion, and high musical intelligence.

  • @MrChrizgdawg It seems not that Mountain Goats fans are humble, though. But that is okay. I admit that I am a self-absorbed bastard myself : )

  • chilling

  • This video is breaking my heart. So good.

  • i have never seen someone so passionate about what they do. he is one of the most brilliant musicians ever. seen him live this weekend and it was absolutely amazing!!

  • I love how he makes the faces. He's so willing to have a fun time.

  • havent not seen john before, its kinda looks like the creepy thin man from charlies angels suddenly got ridiculously brilliant at songwriting...

  • Capos are for pansies.

  • @Beck436 all the way

  • "An astronaut could see the hunger in my eyes from space"

John must be the ideal artist.

  • word. open chords w/ the dirty ol' capo....what i prefer. Thank you.

    p.s. I am a kid, I guess....

  • Yet another commenter on the long list of heavy hearts that need this song right now.

That the Mountain Goats exist is one of few things good in my life.

  • can anyone out there with guitar talent tell which chords he's using in this video?

    i love this song <3

  • it's all basically c, f,c,f,c,g,c,c,f,am,f.

capo on the first and that just repeats the whole time.

  • One could argue that the John Darnielle is a folk singer.

  • I completely agree

  • @unicuber

No because there are no political meaning in his songs.

  • @Slinkx420 For one thing I think one could argue against that as well; I'm having some trouble thinking of many specific MG tunes with overtly political themes, but for one, the Best Ever Death Metal Band Out of Denton clearly has a very powerful message (when you punish a person for dreaming his dream, don't expect him to thank or forgive you). And I'm willing to bet there's at least a few other Mountain Goats songs with, if not strictly a political theme, at least a powerful personal message.

  • @unicuber While you make a good point, and I understand where you are coming from. I many times have said he is a modern day Bob Dylan. As far as being folk I Have to stand my ground and say that there must be a political message, John very rarely makes political comments. Even though it happens best example being what you said "The Best Ever Death Metal Band '' ". I would said more Lo-Fi Indy. But you said you would argue he is a folk singer and you made a great argument. Only on TMG Videos.

  • @Slinkx420 I agree, I like that there are still a few people out there who can have an intelligent discussion on youtube :) Anyway, we may just need to agree to disagree on what really defines folk music; while it has always been a powerful force in political movements, there is still a lot of folk music that isn't political at all. In fact, I have heard folk music defined as being any song that tells a story, that is, a song with characters, and a beginning and an ending.

  • @unicuber Yup only in Mountain Goat videos do civil convo's happen.

  • @Slinkx420 (continued) and secondly, though it's very common, there's really nothing that says folk music has to be exclusively political. Take Bob Dylan for example, it's true he wrote many anti-war anthems and other songs about the government/USA...however he wrote many more songs that had nothing to do with politics: Just Like a Woman, It Ain't Me, Babe, Tangled Up in Blue. Then theres Simon and Garfunkel, perhaps the greatest folk duo of all time, and very few of their songs are political.

  • It's C#, F#, G#, and Am#.

if you put a capo on the first fret, you can use open chords, otherwise you use barre chords, like he does.

  • @unicuber Except for F#, which still needs a barre.

  • don't hate me for this but, I got really excited when I saw he was wearing an NCSU t-shirt ^_^

I actually think this song is beautiful, it reminds me about how powerful love is. It changes our habits, our moods, our character, our being.

  • this is much better than the music video, I think. not that the music video is bad.

  • My girlfriend just left me, and cleared out her stuff out of my apartment. I am so there with him.

  • it makes me cry.

my boyfriend of 3years jus broke up with me an hes goin to iraq in a week :(

what do i do, without you?

  • the most civil conversations on youtube are always on Mountain Goats videos.

  • champ.

  • hes great he puts so much emotion into his playing and singing as well

  • Watching John play is a an emotional experience. It's a little like you're watching something happen that you're not really allowed to see.

  • That's exactly what it's like. If you are not a professional music writer, you should be.

  • I love love love his music. But his voice isn't the definition of 'beautiful'. He's still amazing though.

  • is this your house, dude? i like houses.

  • That is one lovely guitar...does anybody have any clue what it is?

    p.s. brilliant song-writer

  • it mite be a larrive?

  • It's a Larrivee, not sure which model though.

  • Looks like the larrivee L-03 to me.

  • oh my god.

i think my heart just broke.

  • I know it did.

  • I hope all the coffee was decaf, otherwise drinking it all would have been really bad 0.o

  • This guy could easily go solo, but then it would just be 'The Mountain Goat' and who wants to see that?

  • ...? The Mountain Goats is JUST John. It's kind of a running joke for him to go up on stage, say "Thank you, we are The Mountain Goats" -- but it's only him on stage.

  • Yeah, when I said that I'd never seen any of his live show videos.

  • well, his bassist is with him most of the time as well.

  • scrumdidilumpious. come back and play in Ames! we miss you!

  • "I drank it all"

  • he hasn't made a bad song yet, even his unrealeased stuff is magnificent

thank you for all these AOL videos

  • I am going through this right now, which makes this song especially gut-wrenching.

  • me too. it chokes me a bit.

  • !!!!!!! thanks for putting this up! what exactly does that mean, "on AOL".. what are these recordings from?

  • they're from the dl show on aol music

  • My fave song :)

  • I love the Mountain Goats and John and all that, but he is really a totally goofy guy, and the way he sings, he has all those facial expressions...its really funny. BUT THATS THE MOUNTAIN GOATS I GUESS!

  • Dude has soul. He can't help that. :)

  • he sure does

  • @goodhearts yes, yes he does lol. Great music, well written, solid sound. Funny faces are a bonus :)

  • @goodhearts amen! that's what's so beautiful about him and his music. it's pure and raw and completely original. not enough musicians out there like JD

  • That would be because he is actually connecting to the song. That is what artists do.

  • I know, I am not saying its a bad thing that he is into his music.

I just think it is funny to watch, but I totally appreciate it.

  • Yeah, that's cool. :) He is awesome, isn't he?

  • @samoasneoartform Yeah I cracked up with him leaving his mouth hanging open. And the 'HAHAHA' face he makes in the official video for the This Year song. He's definitely goofy but it's awesome.

  • Very good. Love that guitar, feel it right in the gut.

  • Such an amazing song. Long live the Mountain Goats!
