My latest approach with the indoor bin: once weeky, I make a mix of stuff chopped in a food processor... & put it in cavities where I've scooped out some of the old mix of worms, poop, prior food, & shredded paper - & I replace the old stuff on top of the new. Thus the new food starts decomposing fast, as organisms from the older stuff are on all sides of the new. On top I put shredded paper used to wipe my hands & the lid interior, as worms crawl up there & poop sometimes. Have fun! :)
(Cont'd)... pondering my first worm bin: Qstn #3) [Simplified Qstn #1]: Regarding the third bin: a) what do you put into it (when the second one is full)? b) in what order and amount do you layer it in? Thanks!
Second attempt to ask (I don't see my post): 3 questions: #1) when you add the next bin into which the worms travel to make new compost, do you (a) just add it with no other matter in it except the food or (b) first add a layer of damp newspaper strips, then dollops of blended food on top, i.e., the worms first have to eat through the damp newspapers before getting to the food? #2) what percentage of all the worms in the finished compost actually travel to the upper bin?
It probably would be good to add, in small quantitities... as a "base" or alkaline element - to balance out more acidic content. I use wood ash for the same reason.
Yes! ... added second bin and there's a large nursery quite active there now... apparently the worms who were in parenting mode really like the conditions in the second bin :)

Jill,
Great video. Have you added the second bin yet?

Yes, and now a lot of new worms are appearing there in nursery-like piles, very interesting! :) Thanks for asking!
