The whole getting rid of the PS3's ability to play PS2 games is why I don't have a PS3 yet, because I got my PS2 a few years ago and I don't have enough money to get a PS3.

They say the PS2 emotion engine is hard to emulate, but I call that bullsh*t because my computer can emulate PS2 just fine (with some slowdowns here and there but the PS3 shouldn't have any problem), so why can't Sony add an OFFICIAL PS2 EMULATOR as part of the next update ? Who cares if it's got a few glitches here and there, at least we would be able to play PS2 games !
If KONAMI could emulate the Hornet system on PSP (cf Gradius IV in Gradius Collection), why can't SONY emulate PS2 on PS3 ?
@Usul573 Well, jeez, if the very people WHO DESIGNED THE FUCKING THING can't emulate their own stuff on their own hardware, I wonder how some random people on the internet were able to make a software that allows PCs to emulate it.
It's just a pain, the PS2 has 5 processors of varying types, and the PS3 doesn't have anything like the vector processors, it has the PPE and SPE processors, I guess they were able to translate it over to X86 and get PS2 games working pretty well on PC but they recommend having a very fast processor.
The PS3 is going to be such a tremendous pain to emulate someday.
Now the Xbox and Gamecube, those are easy, so simple to understand.
I've read that the software emulation was for the EE, but those models had the GS chip. Or maybe I'm wrong. They'll keep rereleasing PS2 games for PS3 and offering them for download, but they still sell the PS2 of course also.
What they don't have PS2s? I don't think it's all the big of a deal when you consider how well the PS2 has sold, and still sells, but that's how I feel.

I heard: people just werent buying ps3 games in the begining, they kept sticking to their old ps2 titles (back then they were selling brand new ps2 games for cheaper, still are) So they had to get rid of the hardware on the ps3 in order for people to buy the games.

Idk y Sony removed backwards compatibility, just from a standpoint at the market the main cost of the PS3 is due to the cell processor. The blu-ray player costs Sony only 50$, and the PS2 uses a dvd format, which it already has a reader for -_- On another note, I don't notice a huge jump in fidelity when playing PS2 games on PS3. Colors are crisper, runs a little faster. The HD remakes are quite a jump in quality.
Don't see whats the big deal just buy a PS3 slim and a PS2 slim. The 60GB ran hot as hell and was prone to YLOD. The PS3 slim is the much better system. Despite this rant....eventually all games will be downloadable or emulated.

I bought a ps2 when it first came out and then it broke. Bought another (slim), still had it and then bought a ps3. Now my ps2 is broken and I can't play any of my ps2 games without buying a new one (a third one). I should be able to play my games on my ps3 it cost enough...grrrr!!
Oh, when I said the 360 is a less powerful machine than the PS3 - its only in terms of storage - being DVD vs Blu-Ray. Otherwise, they are practically the same in power.
Also, Sony only need to make a PS2 emulator for the PS3, and then merely update it.
Bedroom coders have been emulating for a long time and for PCs where specs are varied - with no financial backing and limited resources. With only 1 spec to worry about(PS3!), it would take no more than TWO programmers to create such an emulator, and to maintain it. Sony, there is NO excuse and you are only denying yourself more customers.
My argument is this: Both the 360 and Wii - less powerful machines than the PS3 - are able to play XBox and GameCube games, respectively, which ran on more powerful hardware than the PS2. Both these machines are much cheaper than a PS3.
I was going to buy a PS3 on launch solely because of BC with the PS2, but £450 was fucking stupid. When it came down to £300, they took the BC out. I voted with my wallet and bought a Wii, DS and PSP instead.
I think they killed the backwards compatibility because they know eventually they can be emulated and they don't want to lose the money when they eventually sell PS2 games.
The reason why they took it out is because Ps2 games run at a faster speed than ps1 and ps3. And it was wearing out the Blu Ray lasers. So they took the feature out so that you don't have to send your system in for repairs. They plan on adding ps2 games to the psn after the ps2 comes off the market.
After going through a shaky start where noone wanted to buy a PS3 because of it being overpriced with very little decent games, you would of though Sony would put a little more thought before trying to screw their customers over again

The only reason I can think of is if they made PS3 backward compatible, then everyone would throw away there PS2 systems. Maybe Sony's thinking we sold a ton of PS2's, and some people cant afford PS3's, lets keep feeding people PS2 games and consoles. It really does suck. I have a PS3 with no BC. But it doesn't bug me mostly because I have 2 PS2's. One fat still works like the day I bought it in 2002 and a Slim which was given to me when my workplace shut down (they had one in the break room, and they were just going to toss it. I saved it)

I can't really say with any certainty why they decided to yank the BC, but if I had to guess, it's got more to do with the hardware being much cheaper to produce since they just dropped their prices a few months back. Besides, if you've already got a bunch of PS2 titles, just run them on an emulator. I know the Linux version of pcsx2 is supposed to run fairly decently and is supposedly getting better with every release.

Idk y Sony removed backwards compatibility, just from a standpoint at the market the main cost of the PS3 is due to the cell processor. The blu-ray player costs Sony only 50$, and the PS2 uses a dvd format, which it already has a reader for -_- On another note, I don't notice a huge jump in fidelity when playing PS2 games on PS3. Colors are crisper, runs a little faster. The HD remakes are quite a jump in quality.

Oh, when I said the 360 is a less powerful machine than the PS3 - its only in terms of storage - being DVD vs Blu-Ray. Otherwise, they are practically the same in power.

Bedroom coders have been emulating for a long time and for PCs where specs are varied - with no financial backing and limited resources. With only 1 spec to worry about(PS3!), it would take no more than TWO programmers to create such an emulator, and to maintain it. Sony, there is NO excuse and you are only denying yourself more customers.

My argument is this: Both the 360 and Wii - less powerful machines than the PS3 - are able to play XBox and GameCube games, respectively, which ran on more powerful hardware than the PS2. Both these machines are much cheaper than a PS3.
I was going to buy a PS3 on launch solely because of BC with the PS2, but £450 was fucking stupid. When it came down to £300, they took the BC out. I voted with my wallet and bought a Wii, DS and PSP instead.

The reason why they took it out is because Ps2 games run at a faster speed than ps1 and ps3. And it was wearing out the Blu Ray lasers. So they took the feature out so that you don't have to send your system in for repairs. They plan on adding ps2 games to the psn after the ps2 comes off the market.

The only reason I can think of is if they made PS3 backward compatible, then everyone would throw away there PS2 systems. Maybe Sony's thinking we sold a ton of PS2's, and some people cant afford PS3's, lets keep feeding people PS2 games and consoles. It really does suck. I was pretty disappointed that my 80GB PS3 didn't play PS2 games but after some research, I found out why Sony took that feature out. I was even considering selling my PS3 to try and get one of the 1st generation models because those are the only PS3s that play PS2 games. another reason was because my PS2 controllers didn't work for shit. I eventually bought a PS2 controller. the slogan for PS3 is "IT ONLY DOES EVERYTHING". everything BUT backwards compatibility for PS2 games.

I can't really say with any certainty why they decided to yank the BC, but if I had to guess, it's got more to do with the hardware being much cheaper to produce since they just dropped their prices a few months back. Besides, if you've already got a bunch of PS2 titles, just run them on an emulator. I know the Linux version of pcsx2 is supposed to run fairly decently and is supposedly getting better with every release.
