I haven't seen this version of Jion by Tanaka Sensei for several years and I have to say that it's refreshing to see movements that are actually completed (no clipping) and without that annoying time wasting with super long pauses that seems to be coming from Sport Karate in Europe.
I train karate hmm like 8 years now.. Im a fighter .. But there is no karate without kata's if you don't like it go train kickboks or something ;) (sorry for bad english)
Kata is one of many training tools that karate people use. It has many uses that non karate people would not begin to comprehend. There is no point trying to convince the uneducated about the value of something. They have to experience it first.
Attention all idiots! I doubt Karate men on Okinawa had memberships to Golds Gym. So kata was modified to provide exercise, muscle strengthening, and as a teaching tool! Sports like boxing & mauy thai have only a few techniques. Martial arts like karate has hundreds of techniques. It would be impractical for an instructor to try to teach individual techniques and all of the possible applications if there was no kata. Kata helps to keep it all organized so it can be taught.
I think the only people that are trolling here are the ones that are hating on Machidas sucess to prove Karate is an effective art. No just Shotokan, lets look at Kyokoshin, Shito Ryu, Wado Ryu and others. So everyone hating on Karate can go to hell. Karate works has been for more than a century now, and will continue to show good fighters AND GOOD CHARACTER BECAUSE THAT'S WHAT KARATE IS. BYE.
people that complain about Kata dont know about Karate. If you think you use it to fight in perfect sequence your wrong. Jesus people, grow some brains.
I must disagree with the usefulness of a kata in a fight. I have practiced martial arts. In a fight many time s the moves are to complex to be useful in street fight. Truth is you can use an occasional move but that’s as far as it goes.
When these moves were used it was for the purpose of fighting and it was used day in and day out by masters and in many cases it was like today the other masters used there art and moves to show who had the better style, not so on the streets.
Don’t get me wrong you can find a style that is more effective than others but as a rule martial arts is not effective in many ways on the street. It conditions the mind more than anything. It make fighting feel more comfortable and helps you to look for that opening to strike… just must be careful you are not so locked in a style that you cant defend properly….aka Bruce Lees philosophy and the emergence of MMA.
@BluePittbull666 keep trolling, dude...you mean any Gracie? While I recognize and value what they've done (as a family, group, organization) for Martial Arts, they haven't had a decent fighter in years (i'm not talking BJJ competition, that's a different thing). They can't punch or kick to save their lives...they have to get close to apply their holds and chokes, so it's a 50/50 situation, since one good kick or punch can ko anyone.
@BluePittbull666 Just from what you've said so far, I can already tell that u haven't been trained in shit! U probably shit on the couch and wait for ur bitch to bring u another BUD from the fridge while watching UFC. In ur mind this makes ur fat ass an expert right?
@BluePittbull666 keep trolling you idiot. people like you dont know their head from there ass. Its never about the style its the fighter. How hard you train and whats works for you in the ring. Stop trolling, your just making your BJJ look even worse you troll.
A kata like gion has numerous benefits: Balance , coordination, and speed training, whereas for practical application, you must disect the kata and practice each move against a realistic attack.
first of all. Kata is used for its basics no the kata wont save your life but the basics and applications it teaches will. I am Jka Shotokan student and have been takeing for along time my instructor is amazing i look up to him becuase he taught me that fighting and abuse of it is wrong we learn so we dont have to fight. IF yall dont understand that i dont know what to say. Sensi tanaka thank you for your demenstration i hope that i can study under you one day

YEAH..katas are more of a warm up/basic skill demo dance..it's great that someone here understands that when somebody tries to maul you ,you just don't shout''heian nidan''in face and beat him silly.
MrJapch, thats what 3 hi jakkers said to my femal sensei in south africa, with a gun pointed at here while filling up, yes it was all show, two landed in intensive care the other one was beaten to a pulp, she`s 4th dan, next time you think its shit, you can fly to south africa and try the same thing best have good medical insurance and life cover just in case and incase you think its bullshit, she is also a four time world champion at shukukai!!
Yeah- you're right. No kata is gonna save your ass in a fight. But if you think that's what karate is all about you missed the boat. I think for a dimwit like you, nothing would work.
I must disagree, If you apply the bunkai contained in a kata, you can cause crippling damage to your opponent, katas are the "body recorded" way of powerful technique
I think this post was directed at MrJapch about 11 months ago! (I had to dig it up to remind myself what I was about... The reply posting system used to really suck. It's better now though...)

@MrJapch yeah step in the ring with a WKF competitor.your an idiot if you think that. It shows your ignorance as well. Many great fighters come out of the Karate world. moron.
@SexyAzumaril <-------- WORLD TROLLING CHAMPION. go troll somewhere else , someone complaing on youtube about a style is a moron. hahahaha. You dont know shit about this guy period. moron!! hahahahaha!!
i wanna learn this shit but there are no dojos nearby..im a black belt in tae-kwon-do but it's very boring to learn in the states..i wanna learn something like shotokan, krav, or hell maybe even something like Judo or jiu-jitsu...maybe Aikido
i remember this kata it was the 2nd black belt kata i learnt ive gone on to learn the sister katas such as Ji'in and jitta... his pace is very good and techniques are superb... ive been training in shotokan for 8 years im now 13 and my kata form is getting close to a highly respectable level.
You may want to check the length of your stances, i.e., zenkutzu and kibadachi. I too had trouble getting back to where I started. I was always 1/2 a step back and to the left. I hope this helps.
