Jeff Davis was a hero bold, You've heard of him, I know, He tried to make himself a king Where southern breezes blow; But "Uncle Sam," he laid the youth Across his mighty knee, And spanked him well, and that's the end Of brave old Jeffy D. Oh! Jeffy D.! You "flow'r of chivalree," Oh royal Jeffy D.! Your empire's but a tin-clad skirt, Oh, charming Jeffy D.
Davis is a historically important person in history. Sadly for him, his destiny was to have an importance to history analagous to Gorbachev's to Reagan. He is the goat of history, the fool who highlights the greater figure's glory. His dedication to his wretched cause of slavery allowed Lincoln to become the Great Emancipator.
@VictorLepanto Jefferson Davis was a vile man -- he was the leader of a group who said God gave them the Negro to enslave. Slavery, southern leaders said, was a divine gift of God, which man should not question. Davis said quite clearly the foundation -- the very reason for the Confederacy - was slavery. The South has ignored or tried to deny the almost insane, brutal, and cruel nature of Davis, Lee, and the others.
@NavyBeer: Well yeah, that is sorta my point. He is the Judas goat of American history. He made the glory of Lincoln possible. It is like the fall of Adam which makes the redemptive work of Christ possible. Remember, Lincoln was assassinated on Good Friday. It is also noteworthy that Lincoln & Davis were actually born w/in a few miles of each other. If they had remained in Kenucky, they might have known each other. Buth one went North to Illinois & the other to Mississippi.
@VictorLepanto Davis was more than Judas, who sold out one man. We forget today the basic issue of the time -- the spread of slavery, vs not spreading it. That was the issue. Slavery in and of itself was not the issue -- it was the SPREAD of slavery.
Davis said that Lincoln talking badly about the spread ofslavery in the Dred Scott "decision" was the "intolerable grievance" that led to secession and war. Not slavery -- but Lincoln speaking backly about the SPREAD of slavery.
@BullshipDetector: You're basically correct, but I don't see why you feel the need to get so abusive & profane about it. He wrote his silly petty little book, but no one reads it. Lee has become the icon of the South b/c Davis is such a historical goat. The apotheosis of Lee is a grudging concession Davis is indefensible. Ultimately, Davis lost the war, his property, his citizenship, & lived out his days on the charity of sympathizers. Pathetic & fitting.
@VictorLepanto I am profain because the truth matters. Lee had young girls tortured, he seemed to take personal delight in their torture, screaming at them during it.
Davis main goal was to spread the insanity, torture, and terror of slavery to other states -- INCLUDING the North, according to his Jan 5, 1863 speech.
Learn the truth about scum like Lee and Davis, and you SHOULD be pissed off.
@BullshipDetector: Good men should be most "pissed" @ their own failings of vision. It is astonishing that men like Davis & Lee could have been so deluded as to defend this supremely unworthy cause. We should take their example to examine our own shortcoming of understanding & sympathy. I'd recommend you reexamine Lincoln's 2nd inaugural Address. The passing parade of circumstance, interests, & events will make us all fools. I would be interested in anything about Davis spreading slavery though
I will email you a speech by Davis, Jan 5, 1863, just astonishing on so many levels. You can re- read it 10 times and find new absurdities.
Im well aware of Lincoln's 2nd, though like Shakespear and Twain, and the movie "Oh Brother Where Art Thou" I should revisit them more
I first found Davis speech on Texas University web site, but they later took it down. I found it elsewhere -- its probably the most hidden Davis speech going.
Thank you for this video. I had never really thought of going to the site & didn't really think anything would be there. I had visited the Last Capital in Daville,VA, and the whole place was magical (it gave me chills just to be there). I will be headed to the white house/Confederate Museum this month, and i may just have to add this place to my list. Thanks from Ohio
Interesting video. Being a 'Yankee' I didn't even realize there was such a thing as a 'Jefferson Davis Memorial'. I find it odd, though, that it exists on the site of his capture and arrest. It wouldn't seem that would be the location that the South would select to glorify the man.
Jeff Davis said slavery was a gift from God, that slaves loved their masters and the only evil ones were those "serpents who whispered the lie of freedom to our slaves".
Not only was Davis a lunatic, he was a coward. He ran away in a dress, hid behind his wife, deserting his own people in their hour of need.
There were a lot of honorable people in the South -- Davis was not one of them.
as the union came down on President Davis trail from washington ga there were two roads leading to irwinville ga. they split up and took both roads to irwinville. on half made it to irwinville first at the fork and headed north on the other road. at night both halves met and each thinking the other was the confederate army fought each other until the sun came up..
A wonderful documentation on the the place "where the civil war ended." Living in New Jersey I've never traveled to Irwinville and didn't realize what was there to see. When I retire next summer I'm looking forward to taking a trip to Andersonville, GA and Irwinville.
I'll be showing this video to my 8th grade history class this week, as I'm teaching a chapter on Jefferson Davis / Civil War.
Thanks for the comment. Irwinville is located very near Andersonville, as well a Fitzgerald, GA. A city that has a very unique history as Georgia's Colony city. Google Fitzgerald and you can find out its unique history.
@cwhistorian1 I hope that you have also taught your class about the conditions at Point Lookout Prison also. It was almost as bad and the Union had supplies for the Confederate Boys but witheld them. Good luck on your retirement..im almost there also!!
@meetman3 if you fucks didnt want a war -- don't start one. You fucks started the war - from 1820 on. Not just Fort Sumter. You shit on free speech and free press from 1820 on, you didnt allow real elections. You invaded other states and territiries to kill and terrorize to advance slavery, you hung voters, threatened the capital, ect.
Do that shit and we will kick your ass again. Don't start shit then cry about getting your ass kicked.
This is one of the best State Park youtubes I've ever seen. I'll be sure to make the trip there in the next few weeks. I never knew anything about it. Your narration is wonderful.
Well done. Thank you. The SOUTH will RISE AGAIN!!!

April is Confederate History Month because Adolf Hitler was born April 20, 1889. Racists unite! The racial struggle is not over. Right?
Isn't that the point???
