so many large parts in those old Tvs. the technology has sure come a long way! Im sure the new flatscreens have more componants, they are just smaller :D
Thanks for posting this. Takes me back to my early days of electronics when all things were truly lethal as far as voltage is concerned. Kids nowadays have and will have no idea. I really learned to respect electricity and engineering through playing with old TV's and radios. Good luck getting it going again!
Cool retro set, good luck bringing it back to life! BTW Ad356, any TV with VHF terminals (which includes...well ALL of them) can be hooked up to cable! It takes a little gizmo called a matching transformer (75 ohm to 300 ohm), found for a buck or two at any electronics store.
that is interesting that is has service records in it that must be a good help in finding out the past problems the the set had and clues to how to repair it again.
15 transistors and 17 vacuum tubes, hey man another thing, do you take a look in the filament of HV rectifier?, if you get the ionization of the neon bulb lamp the flyback are ok, in the ultor had no spark the filament of the HV rectifier must be opened, or a resistor in serie with the filament.the philco hybrid color sets uses a 1R5 resistor in series with the filament...here in brazil the last hybrid color tv set was sold in the 1972
hey man the HV are present in circuit thats the prove of neon lamp near of ultor cable, so you can see any picture in the screem, well the screen voltages are present in the screen picture tube grids?, this color tv uses RGB luminance independent of color output , you know its was a system more popular in some low cost color tvs.
The strange thing is that the neon lamp shows HV AC coming out of the flyback but there is no spark when the CRT anode is discharged so there is no DC coming out of the rectifier/regulator circuit. I've kind of put this set to the side now to try and repair some that have less difficult problems first!
I found another sylvania set on eBay with the same cabinet but a different control section. They said the doors are revisable with a gold cloth on the other side. I like the red best. Item number: 380048684320
Awesome set. i like the cabinet design, and that bank of glowing tubes is just so awesome! Too bad the picture doesn't come on, but I'm sure you'll fix it.
I probably should pause for a little bit before I stop the camera...too often I cut it off and then go record something else immediately afterwards. Also these videos are all done in one take...my computer doesn't have enough RAM to do editing and most of the time it's not really needed.
nice set my grandmother had one like that she worked for Sylvania untill they closed I got a question Is youtube turning in to a peace of crap. know I can't even watch the vids anymore I have broad band and they still keep stopping. It worked great then they changed the system and know it sucks. can we find a new site. I see now one posts new vids anymore
My bedroom TV made cracking noises when I brought it over. It stopped after a week of being unplugged but developed sound issues a few months later. It would make a verp sound from time to time getting more frequently even on mute. I decided it was time for a new set.
I really like that set. I have 4 or 5 Art Margolis books on hand and they mention the neon bulb trick. Now only to get some vintage TV sets !
When we moved to the address were at now it had an old singlewide home on it. About a year later we purchased a doublewide. We had all our things in the neighbors damp basement for about a month. When it came move in time, the first thing I did single handedly was move the Magnavox console in the new house.
There are dry chemical extinguishers in the hallway...I'm going to bring in some CO2 units from home to put in these rooms so one is right at hand. Thanks for bringing up this safety precaution.
Thanks! I actually have another similar small console in the barn I found a few years ago...CRT is kind of weak so at least between the two I should get one working. hopefully this one won't be too bad though.
I've wanted a Sylvania tube console ever since I convinced my Dad to let me bring one home from the large trash pick-up day when I was about 12 years old. The CRT had been smashed and Dad made me take the cabinet back to the trash pick-up after I salvaged the chassis!
awsome set! looks like a stereo console when closed up. you can get the date code off the speaker magnet or some of the components like the caps or the transformers.

old tvs are now useless considering there is no NTSC broadcast and most of them don't even have hookup for cable.

I should've taken some pictures or videos of it.
It was an all-metal case!Agggh I should've sent
it to you, haha I bet you coulda fixed it.

Man! That TV has had a lot of problems within its first 10 years. I would love to see it working again!

Great videos, but they always kind of seem like they end abruptly, like part of the video was cut off or something.

Hi Chad;
I had one of these hybrid sets. Great color and powerful sound! Will be cool to see when you get it working!

I need to comment more on safety precautions myself.
