I thought this was a really good doc. I have lived "land locked" my entire life and had no Idea how difficult a 3 week boat trip would be. There is a lot of swearing, but I guess that's where the "sailor" stereotype comes from. The quotes that were spliced throughout the film were well timed and informative.
So was this a documentary about hipsters being bored on a boat? Jesus, why don't you do a bit of science instead of being self-reflective and sad. I agree with the message behind the movie, but it's too easy to loose the message in the swearing and self-righteousness of the people filming. But the fact remains, this cesspool is floating in the Pacific, and it's only one spot we know of. Considering that roughly 70+ % of the earth is covered by water and we only sail on the main currents and winds that traverse them, how much remains to be seen? The oceans aren't only vast, they are deep. What lays below?

yes, the VICE crew are tragic hipsters, but also, their VICE guide to travel is amazing. Chernobyl & inside N. Korea. Disgustingly hipster, but cool stuff.
look all the carbon gases they put into the sea and air by travelling on that big boat. And for what!?!? To find garbage that we already knew was there!! I am outraged.
@DuhEnlightenedOne They also state that they are helpless. Everything is plastic nowadays. None of us can escape it. We as consumers are helpless. Even though there are alternative materials, most are so far beyond what we can afford. They are helpess, we are helpless. If you're outraged that this, then route your outrage towards helping to break the plastic cycle we are trapped withing.
@AiEnkai I propose connecting every home with a "food delivery tube (FDT)" . Much like natural gas, water and electricity is piped in to your home, I believe the future is delivering all food in tubes. Press a button and gravy is delivered from the FDT. Press another button and soda or milk or salad dressing is piped in through the FDT. No more plastic bottles. Admit my idea is genius. It is the future.
@DuhEnlightenedOne Assuming your food isn't filled with GM foods and a ton of preservatives and food contaminants from previously shipped foods AND assuming the pipes wouldn't be made from toxic chemicals.
@AiEnkai I believe the Food Tubes could be made out of the linings of animal intenstines. And ever 50 feet, there would be a cow stomach. And every night, there would be a coffee enema to clean the food distribution tube. I have investors knocking on my door right now.
Vice was cool in print a million years ago, it was entertaining to flip through while you drank your coffee before the advent of iPhones etc...and some of the travel videos N Korea etc were fun and cool...but this sucks.
it's not that he swears so much, it's that he is hopelessly dependent on swearing. as well, he diminishes his audience and limts his effect by alienating people from watching.
ooohhh he swore! we all the the word on a daily basis, who gives a fuck! this is a group of mixed aged individuals that are attempting to expose a somewhat unknown extreme environmental issue. furthermore, the fact that the majority of comments on this doc outline that these guys are "douche bags" is a clear example that we live in a world filled with ignorance and arrogance! they see a documentary that outlines a serious issue and judge only the people trying to make it! enjoyable doc!
@jameswest122 lol fuck you. you're just afraid to use those words and use them as a scapegoat to avoid real issues. instead of fuck i'll say frig. instead of shit i'll say poop. instead of jesus christ i'll say jeeze louise...because i'm offending you? nah i think i'll say what comes naturally to me, doesn't mean i have a small vocabulary or am any less of an intellectual. basically you're restricting of words lessens peoples vocabularies n00b
Fish-out-of-water hosts can be funny and entertaining. Unfortunately for us, Thomas Morton is neither. He comes off as pretentious, uneducated and simple. This film should be very interesting but loses all credibility quickly when we realize we'll be lead through this journey by a kid who's language is fouler than the garbage he's gone out to investigate. But then again, what was I to expect? Is is VICE after all. What a joke... don't waste your time.
omg they said the f-word!!!!! therefore they are bad! fuckin americans 90% of you are fat morons...i went to nyc 3 times and no one even knew ottawa was the capital of canada go kill yourselves
I watched this video for all of one minute and thirty-five seconds (1:35). That is the point when that foul-mouthed punk (I hope to God he wasn't supposed to be one of the scientists) started his swear-fest. Before watching this video I had heard about the Gyre and wanted to find out more. Now, if this is the type of people they are sending to investigate, I have NO interest in it any longer. THANKS PUNK!!!!!
OMG IM SO GLAD THE TOP COMMENTS SAY WHAT I WANTED TO! This doc was supposed to ba about so much more, and it was so hard to get past these embarrassingly inarticulate, whiny douche bags that seemed to think they were there to record how much of a 'total bitch' it was being out on the 'gnarly-ass ocean, like, for soooo long'.
An interesting documentary... except for the three guys, reporters?, that present it. The first sentence of the video could be perfectly applied to them. Appart from that, a video to watch. I would edit it to a 40-minute clip, deleting some parts where the reporters (?) do stupid stuff. From minute 45 to the end, recommendable.
wow and that is why you don't ever hang out with or hire a pot head or what ever the "f'bombing" low IQ nitwit was to work with you or even hang out with you... why didn't the crew attach an anchor to four eyes while he was sleeping pick him up and through him over board to assure he didn't have to speak for the rest of the film. message was cool though
HOLY F'BOMB the shroom head guy with the nerdy glasses gave me anxiety. I wanted to punch the kid in the face the whole entire film. I could not even watch the movie I skipped through the whole thing. Every time I hear that kids face with the glasses, move his mouth with the low IQ and his lack of vocabulary it made the sincere message that was attempted in the movie completely fail. That kid is proof of the chemical imbalance. fuck'n f'bomb nitwit! if i see you walking in the street!!
And all the people trashing the video are being juvenile. Most of us here couldn't do any better. The video is interesting at certain points. It's a learning experience too for the people who created it.
But there was too much improv and not enough technical examination. I wanted to see the results of the tests on the garbage to get an idea what exactly was in the water. And nothing really tied up the message in a convenient way.
I liked the comment about The Social Contract. Having plastic filling our oceans is not serving the common good. We go after criminals but we're not going after the plastic. Why? Part of it is what Meredith brought up. The garbage is invisible.
The continuous profanity used in this film ruins the good subject matter almost destroying it. It's great, that way we should be concerned about cleaning up the oceans. But, you cannot expect that to happen, or anyone to take you serious with the stupid speech you and your idiot friends use. Use better English or STOP reporting anything.
It also just so happens that some people watched this expecting it to be about what the title and description portray.... To anyone with that expectation, this movies is a major disappointment.
To all who are complaining about people not liking this film; if you have the time to bitch about people bitching, I have the time to bitch about this film, and we all have time to bitch about eachothers bitching, then lets not bitch about anyone not having a life beyond bitching about things online. We all have lives, it just so happens that it doesn't take very long to express your views about something on YouTube.
This was such crap. I can't believe I watched the whole thing; I kept expecting it to get to the point, but it never did. Nobody gives a crap about your hipster woe's. This was such garbage, I don't understand why you try to convince people that this movie is about trash; It's a documentary on you assholes bitching.
like the crew i expected to see an 'island of garbage' kind of disappointing but at the same time like the girl said, this is a lot worse. wow is all i have to say, also sucks we did this to ourselves and we can't just clean it up. oh and props to them for going out there for three weeks!! i think i would go insane. funny watching their reactions once stepping on land again.
So... what can people do to help the plastic/garbage from polluting our oceans?...was this a love story?...is Hawaii garbage island?...hm... It had some humor but I wished it had been more informative. They put in perspective how tiny plastic can become but didn't touch much on how to cut down our uses of plastic.
To the crew of this boat: If you have garbage coming out of your mouths all the time, f bombs and other cursing, how can you begin to clean up the garbage in the oceans?
well sit right back and enjoy a tale a tale of a cursered ship with 7 somewhat castaways who sailed the sea's for many days in search of a pile of shit they braved the waves with storms and rains then finally fiinding it they lost their brains and could ony speak in terms like fuck and shit
all you whining cunts complaining about hipsters and foul language, remember that you are all sitting on your fat fucking arses in front of your monitors watching this while they were the only ones who had the balls, and determination to go out and do something constructive. you pretentious, self righteous morons....if they were the only ones who had the drive to go out there and document this for the rest of us, then they have every right to express their disgust however the fuck they want
F-bomb??? Oh For fuck sake, pull you fucking head out of your asshole you stupid cunt! If you feel justified in tuning out and calling this a waste just because a major environmental disaster wasn't presented to you in fucking King james old testament packaging then fuck you ! Fuckin gimp ass bitch made motherfuckers! go kill yourselves you whiny fuckin pieces of shit!
also, all you people whining about how you hate hipsters and blah blah blah.... who cares? The point of this film was to show people how terribly we are treating the ocean, if all you can think about is how much you hate the people who filmed this movie, then I am sorry but you are about 10 times more annoying than any person in this movie.
'04 holiday - Oahu, Kialua (a small town) n. of Diamond Head, taking a toke break from luau thing. a lil voddy. running my yap 'bout geology... I glance down and to my surprise (shock then horror and sadness then anger) the tide line was be-speckled w/ tiny pieces of PLASTIC. this - O - big. w/i a matter of seconds I 'got it.' 'jesuschrist!' or 'fuck me' or 'expletive' - LOOK! that is plastic...as far as my eyes could see. then, in my head - OMFG! THIS SHIT IS COVERING THE COAST. :(
Started to watch but it kept freezing. I am so glad I took the between times to read the comments. I figured it wouldn't be as good as it looked. Thomas puts the sea sickness patch and turns into a cursing and as others have stated here whiny brat.(Maybe it wasn't the drugs but his true personality) To bad as the subject matter is very interesting, to me anyways.
Horribly done documentary. I was very interested in this topic, but this was just atrocious. Boring, poor editing, and the swearing. Are you kidding me?
I REALLY WISH I HAD NEVER SEEN THIS, TRULY. " WHERE'S THE SOY MILK ? "...." OH NO, WE HAVE TO TAKE AH SHOWER NEXT TO THE TOILET"..." I WANNA GO HOME "..........FUCK OFF YOU OVER PRIVILEGED ELITIST LITTLE SHITS. SUCH CRY BABIES.
WTF ?! THIS IS STUPIDEST SHIT I'VE EVER SEEN. I'M SO FRUSTRATED. WHERE'S THIS BIG ISLAND OF TRASH? I DON'T DOUBT THAT THERE IS SUCH AH PLACE, BUT THE TITLE OF THIS MOVIE SUGGESTS THAT THAT'S WHAT WE'LL BE SEEING. SO ? WTF ? THEY SHOULD HAVE CALLED THE MOVIE " THREE WHINY ,SPOILED LITTLE HIPSTER BITCHES ON AH BOAT, WHO HATE CALIFORNIANS " . WHAT AH WASTE OF TIME. UHGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGG! I'M SO MAD RIGHT NOW. I JUST WANNA PUNCH THOSE LITTLE WHINY BASTARDS IN THE FACE.
There is many forms of pollution today. I would call this VIDEO POLLUTION. The one thing I noticed is that little nerdy dude, Thomas, needs to get laid....what a douche' bag. I am curious as to how much fossil fuel they burned in their effort to show the POLLUTION. Didn't they even have the fuckin sense to use a SAILING VESSEL when filming a documentary on pollution, not a diesel guzzling boat. I think I saw the nerdy dude taking a piss in the ocean, but he was having a hard time squatting...
Weak presentation. An important topic and a good concept gave this story huge potential but these kids blew it fantastically. I can't believe they portrayed themselves that way. The Captain had some good monologues, pity he lost his samples, and what little I did see of the subject that initially enticed my interest, actually has me intrigued. Hopefully the crew will document their next voyage with the help of professionals. This video however, is a Fail!
wtf is up with the hipster fucktard talking about being horny? Have you never once left you moms basement? You moron, I had to stop watching because of you.
I agree it could have been much much more.I have been hearing of this plastic island in the middle of the pacific for over 10 years. I too imagined a island of plastic bags floating around. It was nice to see a documentary on this subject to help educate the public. I did not care about trying to create some false drama on a vice cruise, or the vice crew. The captain and researcher were the most interesting but their screen time was limited in comparison. The eye roll at mention of a dry boat??
What a polluted waste of time. Go to the middle of Pacific Ocean and repeat the f-bomb a gazillion times. Wanted to hear and see the message but tuned out due to due to whiny douche bag f bombs, that was the true waste. I know this isn't Cousteau but ship the whiny douchebag/di@#head guy back to the dock. If I couldn't stand hearing him for 5 minutes how did the crew not dump his arse overboard?
we need to float in lighter than air balloon castle cities and harvest the plastic to recycle in products we can print out on 3d printers. after ending copyright law.
If the organic pollutants are "sopped up" by plastic, can't the plastic be seriously 'trolled' and then, removed from the plastic, someway, somehow, and reused? It's all synthetic, right? If so, it can be changed, reused. Am I being naive, or brilliant and underfunded? LOL
At the end he wonders where you can go and not step in trash: 'maybe on the moon?'. Nope: there's apollo and russian space stuff lying around. Also there's a cloud of satellite trash around Earth. There's junk on other planets as well, some landers and bits on Mars, some other stuff is flying bricked around the solar system and in few years both Voyager's will become first interstellar garbage. Go humans!
I'd be a little unsure about eating the fish that swims there when the captain just explained about the ugly toxins in the foodchain. And im not against swearing per-se but it gets annoying, makes it look cheap. Still it's scary how much junk we dump on this planet. Hopefully we don't all get mutants of it too soon, cause there's loads of interesting molecules in that soup, there might even speed-evolve some polymer based lifeforms, makes nice SyFy movie.
This is not a problem at all! The plastic is going through the "biodegradable" process just as was promised on the commercials years ago! We all need to focus on the real issues...Gay people are getting married folks!
This documentary was a real eye opener for me. I didn't realize that plastic in our oceans is such a rampant problem and just how serious an issue it really is. This documentary was not created to be politically correct but to portray how plastics in our oceans are actually changing the chemistry of our waters, and consequently our sea food and eventually human chemical composition. It was kind of funny to watch their 'cabin fever' antics out at sea. It can seriously make people crazy.
By the way if your kids can't handle the word "fuck" then how are they gonna handle the fact that the arteries of the world are clogged with shit that gives ladies miscarriages and that all this happened on YOUR watch dickheads. Prioritise.
Vice are funny they go to all these warzones and sites of atrocities and say, "dude, that's fucked, I, like can't believe it. Pain and economic oversight, like, exist, I guess" and get lots of danger cred for pointing out the obvious.
But hipster morons are always surprised there is a world beyond endless trendy bands and self-defeating irony.
I thought it was a great documentary. Yes the language was a little abusive but that only shows that they care. Perhaps they care a little too much. Swearing is a healthy expression of anger. Yes they are not professionals. Professionals are in it for the money, not the cause. These guys did this because they really care and they got there message across which is what it is all about. We have created an organic plastic that breaks down. People need to know that and demand it. Peace.
Far to much like a home video for me. These guys really need to expand their vocabularies if they want to make something other than gonzoesque pseudo documentaries. There's nothing wrong with swearing per se, language is simply a tool. But these clowns seemed to have the wrong tool box.
a good film raising a very important issue, however I REALLY wish it didn't have all the unnecessary F**k words and scenes of american egotistic whining and idiotic pointless statements. In my opinion there should have been more scientific respect (ie not laughing about samples getting broken) and more insight into the scientists ideas for possible solutions, but I guess it wasn't really a science documentary.
I thought this was a really good doc. I have lived "land locked" my entire life and had no Idea how difficult a 3 week boat trip would be. There is a lot of swearing, but I guess that's where the "sailor" stereotype comes from. The quotes that were spliced throughout the film were well timed and informative.

AiEnkai 2 weeks ago
@AiEnkai I believe the Food Tubes could be made out of the linings of animal intenstines. And ever 50 feet, there would be a cow stomach. And every night, there would be a coffee enema to clean the food distribution tube. I have investors knocking on my door right now.

It was ok.

There's junk on other planets as well, some landers and bits on Mars, some other stuff is flying bricked around the solar system and in few years both Voyager's will become first interstellar garbage. Go humans!

Peace.
