  • you're like the bob ross of asian food hahaha.

  • Looks tasty.Mmmmm ? :)

  • @vangpao93 It is! Give it a try. Thanks for watching!

  • Isn't sashimi raw fish?

  • @mikethevegetable Yes, it is! Thanks for watching!

  • He said rice 13 times within the first minute.

  • @Dylaaannnnn rice, rice, rice, rice, rice, rice....whew! That's a lot of rice! Thanks for watching and counting!

  • @cmtoy Well, you DID say that sushi is all about the rice... only seems appropriate to drive home the point!

  • @notreallydaedalus Point taken! RICE! :-)

  • love your video recipes!!! where do you get all these ingredients!! im from nyc anybody here can help me? lol

  • @Revelry00 I bet you could get the ingredients in any Asian market in NYC. Thanks for watching and good luck!

  • you remind me of bob ross ahaha

  • @29sammy92 oh shit, i posted the exact same thing before reading your comment. it's too true.

  • great vid! Just one thing..shouldn't the vinegar be mixed first with sugar and salt and warmed up?

  • @borghese84 If you are using plain rice vinegar, yes. If you're using seasoned vinegar you're good to go. I've never tried using warmed vinegar since I'm usually trying to get the rice to cool off! Good questions, thanks for watching and asking!

  • I usually mix the Wasabi and Soy Sauce.

  • @LordCaoCao155 That's some spicy soy sauce! Thanks for watching!

  • Oh god, why does youtube have to link this from the budget ramen video T.T.

  • Hey Cmtoy, try using half a sheet of nori. You can get 2 rolls out of a sheet of nori instead of having all that let over rice you have to roll. Unless you like the rice. In that case nevermind lol

  • @tenniswiz9941 Thanks for the suggestion! I've done it both ways. I like the taste of the nori and bigger rolls. I do cut the nori in half if I'm feeling like I might not have enough for company. Thanks for watching and posting!

  • that rice looks terrible.

  • @henrykazuo Hmmm...well...it tastes good! Give it a try, you may find a reason to smile. Anyway, thanks for watching!

  • @cmtoy I'm sorry for being rude...I just thought the rice was too "loose" and not so sticky as the regular japanese kitchen uses. Other than that, your video is great!

  • @henrykazuo I appreciate the reply! I've found that most critics haven't actually tried making the recipes AND that folks that actually try the recipes seem to enjoy the results. That's why I encourage folks, especially the critics, to please try it out THEN report back. Incidentally, It's not a bad way to go though life! Try it! You might like it!

  • I love it! Thank you so much!

  • @SwinkyLovesBananas You're welcome! Thanks for watching!

  • 1Se ve muy pitero!

  • When I did it I didnt put wasabi in it

  • @awsomeandy911 That's what great about cooking for yourself. You can do what you want, and not do what you don't want! Thanks for watching and posting.

  • great video...

make sure you use seasoned rice vinegar thought (it has salt and sugar in it)

sushi rice is traditionally seasoned with a dressing made of rice vinegar, water (steeped with kobu), salt and sugar

normally i just make it with the correct dilution of rice vinegar, salt and sugar and it turns out great!

thank you very much for the demo though!

  • @schmidthead36 Sounds like you should make a video of your method! Thanks for watching and sharing your suggestions!

  • Thanks! This is the only roll I know how to make and my first roll! I love it! thanks so much!

  • @bladekid205 Great to hear you tried it and liked it! You're most welcome! Thanks for watching, trying, and sharing your results!

  • not good the rice is not good!

  • @ZZaiBoT2011 Did you try making it, and tasting it?

  • @cmtoy No but i have worked on a Sushi bar so i know when the rice is perfekt that rice you buy on normal shops that is not good rice. The sushi rice will be little sticky not much but just a little bit I can see that this rice in the video is bad not good rice.

  • @cmtoy No but i can see when the rice is good i have worked on a sushi bar the rice will be little sticky not much but little. but the rice will also have good viniger, fish, toppings.

  • @ZZaiBoT2011 Please do give it a try! Advice and criticism is much more valid and helpful when the critic can say, "Yes, I tried it your way...AND...here's what I suggest." If you take a minute or so to read responses from other folks you'll see some different perspectives AND some pretty good advice. Thanks for watching though!

  • this isn't california roll

  • @billarakas If you do a little research you'll find that California rolls can be both inside out or right side out. Give it a try! Thanks for watching and for the opportunity to respond to your comment!

  • @cmtoy thanks a lot

  • @cmtoy thanks a lot. This is also called kappa maki

  • he didnt flip it around

  • thx

  • Well presented and easy to follow. I just made some while ago. It's yummy! Have you tried Nikishi brown rice instead of the white medium grain rice?

  • @dffjass Great! Glad you tried it and that it worked for you. I have done it with the brown rice. It's good too! Thanks for watching, trying, and posting!

  • @vanillabeanbeaner It IS good! Give it a try and let me know how it works for you! Thanks for watchig, and for posting!

  • arent you supposed to cut the nori in half? and use short grain rice? hahaha jk

  • @bust3rhymen Very funny! Thanks for making me smile.

  • aren't you supposed to cut the nori in half? also aren't you supposed to lay the rice on one side then flip it over and lay the cab and other stuff on the side then roll?

  • @vagabond791 You CAN lay the rice down, flip the nori over, and roll it with the rice on the outside, but you don't HAVE to. This method was developed specifically for Americans who couldn't deal with the taste and texture of the nori on the outside. Try both and then do what you YOU like best...or mix it up so you don't get bored while making sushi for all your friends! Thanks for watching, and for asking!

  • aren't you supposed to cut the nori in half?

  • @vagabond791 You CAN cut the nori in half. Do you HAVE to? No...Give it a try. If you cut the nori in half the roll will be...half as wide. It's a matter of preference. Thanks for asking and watching!

  • its is actually very easy to do. rolled for the first time on monday and after the first couple rolls think ive got it down. the ingredints are very cheap to get and make alot. We spent $25 at the store and got the crab, ahi, cucumber, green onion, avocado, nori sheets and bamboo matt. already had rice and rice vinegar at house. No more spending 50 bucs at sushi restaraunt. My vinegar mixture is 2tbsp rice vin, 2 tbsp sugar and 1 tbsp kosher salt.

  • at :11 to :13 ..You're incorrect. I've asked more than 10 profession sushi chefs.. sushi rice IS NEVER medium grain rice. all TRUE sushi rice is many sub types of SHORT grain rice. the longer the grain the more difficult it is for each rice to stick to one another when mixing the rice vinegar ( and/or other sub ingredients for the rice mixture). also I personally TRIED more than 3 different subtypes of medium grain rice to make sushi with it. IT DOESN'T WORK. let's not missinstruct people.

  • @chronofusion I won't argue with your experts or failure at sushi.Read the success folks have had below. Look online. You'll find medium grain is fine for sushi. Here's the quote on this new unopened 10 lb bag of Kokuho Rose Sushi Rice sitting right next to me. "Ingredients 100% medium grain milled rice."Nishiki Sushi Rice is also described as medium grain. If you prefer short grain, more power to you! I am not wrong nor have I missinstructed people over 30 years of teaching. Thanks for watching!

  • @chronofusion you mean to tell me that you found 11 or more professional sushi chefs and asked them about this youtube video just to try and prove a point? i asked my magic 8 ball if you were a douche and it said "all signs point to yes"

  • @bust3rhymen I'm liking your Magic 8 Ball! ;-)

  • i wonder if we get these ingredients at walmart

  • @alveyEMD That's a good question! I know SOME of it can be found there. Let me know what you find. Thanks for watching!

  • @cmtoy : do u cook the crab meat or as soon as it defreezes u just leave it like that?

  • @shypuppy128 Hi! The "crab meat" is imitation crab. It's actually processed fish, and it is cooked. If you were to use real crab you would cook it first and let it cool off before using it to make the rolls. Hope that helps! Thanks for the question, and for watching!

  • @cmtoy yes thank you it helped alot ^w^ and your welcome, this vid had me drooling lol

  • Okay, I'm trying this. There's a grocery store nearby that sells everything I'd need. For some reason, I assumed it would be quite difficult or the ingredients would be very expensive or too hard to come by, but this looks very doable. It probably takes practice to roll them up nicely, but I love California rolls, so it's definitely worth it!

And even if my first few look a little wonky, they'll still TASTE great!

  • Hi mr. Toy,

I gave the roll a try and it worked out better than expected. Thanks again for the video and for the encouragement.

    Cheers and happy cooking :)

  • @thehouseofmao Glad you did it and that it worked for you! Thanks for watching!

  • shouldnt the mat have plastic on it?

  • @cromerbeach Plastic is optional! Thanks for watching!

  • nice kitchen (: i gotta get me one of those sushi mat things or whatever they're called so i can make this stuff!

  • @crystallionaire Yes! Get a sushi rolling mat. You can get them at some grocery stores with internatonal sections, kitchen stores, and of course, Asian markets. Thanks for watching!

  • I tried this one as well. I only got the problem that the rice wasn't that sticky and a bit grainy. A few people said I could use every rice for it and wouldn't need a special sushi rice for it. So I tried it with basmati rice (I don't know if it's called that way in USA too...). Should I have used another rice or would it work with more rice vinegar or something like that as well?

  • @susiQ90 Hi! I would suggest you use the medium grain white sushi rice. The other long grain rices are not sticky enough. Don't use too much vinegar. Remember, liquids make the rice LESS sticky! Give it another try and let me know how it comes out. Thanks for watching!

  • @cmtoy Ok, I'll try that. Thanks for your fast answer. ^-^ You know, it is nice to comment and nice answers come back. Most of the time your comments get totaly ignored... I'll tell you when I tried it with another rice! =)

  • @susiQ90 I appreciate that people take the time to watch and then more time to ask questions or make constructive comments. the least I can do is acknowledge your effort! So let me know how it goes!

  • that's alot of sesame seeds.....lol

  • @katchan1 Sesame seeds are tasty! Thanks for watching!

  • That was fun and real!! I get a wee bit discouraged with the other professional how to videos.

I've never tried making these rolls but I might! Hope this isn't much of a silly question, but are the ingredients hard to find? Do local stores like Harris teeter, kroger's, farm fresh or food lion have these? Or do I have to go to a real Japanese grocery store? Lastly, are they expensive?

    Thanks again for sharing!

  • @thehouseofmao I do hope you give it a try, and don't give up even if it doesn't come out perfectly the first time! I am able to get all the ingredients in the local grocery stores here in Maine, and Maine is not an international hub for Asian ingredients. You can probably get the ingredients for under $15.00. Give it a try and let me know how it goes. Ask any other questions you might have. And thanks for watching!

  • @real776 Yes, good stuff, and much less expensive then getting at the restaurant! Thanks for watching!

  • wazaaaa~~~~abi

  • @RENEDU2 Shuuuuuuuu~~~shi! Thanks for watching!

  • Thank you!! I love all your videos! Yum Lunch and dinner for me is Sushi and Ramen!!!! And some Jasmine Tea... Ahhh! YUM!

  • @MikiChanWolfSpirit A great combination! Thanks for watching!

  • Sir any recommendations if i dont have a roller??

  • @pogisiG Hmmm...I guess you could find one of those flexible plastic cutting mats and cut it down to size. I've seen sheets of silicone sold as rolling mats too. Some people say you can use plastic wrap. You can generally find them at some grocery stores and kitchen stores now. Also, you can order them on the internet! Good luck and thanks for watching!

  • @cmtoy Thank you for the videos :)

  • Great video thanks for sharing :)

i was always under the impression sushi was raw fish XD

a friend of mine got me to try California roll and i thought it was really good :D

could you give me some more suggestions on dipping sauces? or is soi sauce usually the only thing used?

    again THANK YOU!! :D

  • @Ender5529 You're welcome! Soy sauce is the traditional dip for sushi. Some people add a bit of wasabi horse radish. BE CAREFUL though! As we say in Maine, it's WICKED hot! Thanks for watching!

  • huh! california rolls r supposed to be an inside-out sushi roll where rice is in the outside... yeah?

  • @maryjinkee A good question! They can be either way! So if you like them with the rice on the outside take a look at the other video. Thanks for watching!

  • That looks tasty!!!! I wish i had one right now... :D

  • @RaCh3L521 It is tasty! Get the ingredients and you can have one, or two anytime you want! Thanks for watching!

  • Count the number of times "just like that" is said...

  • @DesiRobot Wow! You listened closely...more than once! Give it a try and let us know if it comes out just like that for you! Thanks for watching!

  • isnt the rice suppose 2 b outside and da meat and veggie inside with the seaweeds? And ur rice seems a bit dry. But its alrite! U did it ur bestie! :D

  • @sukiyukie You can roll either way. It depends on how you like it! Give it a try both ways and let us know which one you like better.

  • Thank you for sharing! I've made these before however, I just put some stuff together that I remembered my mom making. I didn't put the rice vinegar nor did I think to wet my hands and use them to place and spread out the rice on the nori. This video was quite helpful! Now I need to find where I put my bamboo sushi roller. =)

  • @hgib3 You're welcome! Now go find that bamboo roller and make some SUSHI! Thanks for watching!

  • just like that..

  • @pumbsteri Yes! ;-) Thanks for watching...and listening!

  • thank you for your help. I made sushi for the first time last night and all my family was amazed. They loved the taste and they want me to make it everyday from now on. I think i really need to buy a rice cooker.

Anyways, thanks again for your help!!

  • @clouDelta I'm pleased that you amazed your family! Now you can teach THEM to make sushi and then you can all have a party! Thanks for watching!

  • shouldnt the rice be in the outside?

  • @jj310562 A good question! They can be made both ways! The "inside out" version was created for westerners who didn't like the texture of the nori seaweed. So the "official" way is with the rice on the inside, the "New" way is with the rice on the outside. Make what YOU like...unless, of course, you're making it for other folks! Thanks for watching!

  • Ewww imitation crab

  • @ProxyNuker But real fish! Use the real crab, or as one person suggeted...use fresh Maine lobster! That's what's great about life...you get to choose...just like everyone else. Thanks for watching!

  • @cmtoy not in china lol

  • u sure do suck ur teeth alot.................good vid by the way. i just might do one

  • Tried this tonight , bought them many times but never made them..My Partner has been bugging for ages to make them and so I did. Tried all kinds of different combo's in the filling. It was awesome now she wants me to make them more often..Have to work on my rolling but other that they were great...Thanks for the vid was an excellent guide :)

    Cheers from Australia :)

  • @racingAU Well, as they say, practice makes perfect! I'm glad you and your partner benefited from the video. I appreciate your trying the recipe out and reporting back! Thanks for watching!

  • Is Sushi rice and Tosted Nori available in USA Food stores? I want to know because I want to make some. Thanks! ^-^

  • @lego54546 Good question! I believe both are available in the international foods section of most of the large US groceries. Here in New England I've bought sushi ingredients at Shaws and Hannaford stores as well as in several Asian markets and even at kitchen stores. Thanks for watching!

  • One question...does it matter which cucumber I use?

  • @barber747 Good question! I use the European cucumbers. Their seeds are smaller. Be sure to choose one that's as straight as possible. It's a pain to cut up a curved cuke. Thanks for watching!

  • id like to know how to prep the rice also, can never get it right, thank you

  • @ilie315 Hi! Thanks for your question. Are you asking about cooking the rice, or adding the vinegar? Thanks for watching!

  • Comment removed

  • @cmtoy do i need to let teh rice to soak before cooking it ? how long u let it simmer after it boils

  • @ilie315 Hi! So here's how I cook rice. No need to soak the rice. Figure on 1/2-1/3 cup of raw rice per person. Put in enough water so when you touch the TOP OF THE RICE with the tip of your index finger the water just covers the first joint. Cover the rice and bring it to a boil. When it begins to boil turn the burner down to the lowest setting. DO NOT uncover the rice! Let it cook for 15 minutes. After that the rice is done! Give it a try and let me know how it works for you.

  • @cmtoy

ive tried half a dozen times, and whenever i dont let it soak its hard in the middle, when i soak it for like 20-30 min i get sum quality sushi i tellyou, better than most of the places that charge you for it

  • @cmtoy

do i need to let teh rice to soak before cooking it ? how long u let it simmer after it boils

  • yummy!!

  • i was salivating during the whole video also where can you get these ingredients?

  • @jwjkproductions Hi! Glad you enjoyed the video. Depending on where you live, you can get most of the ingredients at a large grocery store, in the international foods section. If not, you will need to go to an asian market for the nori, seaweed sheets. The rolling mat can be found at the Asian market or at a kitchen store. Good luck and thanks for watching!

  • @cmtoy thanks, i live in the midwest and its hard to find ingredients such as seaweed but thanks for the advice, i will check it out

  • i was salivating during the whole video

  • looks like kimbap

  • wow i love sushi

  • THIS IS THE BEST SUSHI I HAVE EVER MADE! THANKS FOR GIVING ME THE RECIPE!

  • @1paperairplanes Thanks for giving it a try! I appreciate feedback, especially when someone actually makes the effort to follow the recipe! Thanks for watcing!

  • @cmtoy Great video! Love the little info as you show how to make the dish. I always thought "sushi" meant "raw fish"

  • your rice doesn't look that sticky to me :/

  • @kwaikat The rice is very sticky. The reason it doesn't stick to my fingers is because I've wet my hands before handling the rice. Next time you make rice give it a try and then let me know how it works for you. Thanks for watching!

  • @cmtoy I know that the salted water will prevent the rice to stick to your fingers (lol i only eat sticky rice so I know ^^), it's just that in the boil and on the nori itself it didn't look that sticky :S Maybe it's the video that made it appear this way, Or maybe it's because I always make my rice ultra sticky ^^' (sticky rice is the best <3)

  • @kwaikat Interesting...I've never salted the water for my hands. I usually mix in a bit of rice vinegar though. The vinegar kills bacteria, so it's good to use if you have a sushi making party with lots of people touching the rice. And...I agree! Sticky rice is great. I think it may be a matter of taste. I've had sushi where the rice is too soft and mushy. I've also had it when the rice is dry and hard. So, somewhere in between is good! Thanks for writing back and for watching!

  • @cmtoy Oooh well I've never tried it with the vinegar in the water ^^' I always did it with lot of salt :) my ex japanese boyfriend did the same! Hopefully for me I always do it alone (well not really my cats are always lurking to get some fish xD)

Well, I never had the case where it became mushy, whatever rice I use, I always manage to make it sticky (with it keeping a good shape) :)

But yep in the end it's just a matter of taste ^^

Keep up with the good tutorials :D !

  • Informative video - and I even had a good laugh when I saw the video response "How to use chop sticks". Ahh, this place is funny! XD

  • Oh Hi! It´s nice to see a man cooking, nice video :)

Francis is the host of @cookingwithdog, another channel guru for japanese cooking and there I met that fabulous food :)

  • @oooTOFAooo Thanks! I'll have to check Francis out! Thanks for watching!

  • @cmtoy This video es amazing, thank you for posting.

  • I miss Francis voice :(

  • @oooTOFAooo Who is Francis?

  • can u ever show me how to make a tiger roll can u do a video for me plzzzzz

  • @cobohall76 Soon! Thanks for watching!

  • great video! like! like! like!

    sushi is my favorite!

  • @beybideng13 I'm getting the idea that you liked the sushi video... ;-) Thanks for watching

  • good video! like! like! like!

    sushi is my favorite! yummy!

  • @beybideng13 Yes, it is yummy! Thanks for watching!

  • A lot of other 'how-to-make sushi' videos on youtube don't mention the rice vinegar... is it always used? Did those other videos just forget to mention it? Like its implied? Good video!

  • @dealer0Fthings Oh my...without the rice vinegar it's not really sushi! Maybe it's so basic that they forgot to mention it. Anyway, make sure you add it to the rice before rolling! Thanks for the question and for watching!

  • I like your vid....will definetly give it a try

  • @mmorrellwilson Great! Let me know how it works for you. Thanks for watching!

  • perfect except the rice and nori were backwards. 7 years in japan and i still miss the cali roll. thanks and take care from nagoya

  • @pmharl You're welcome and Thanks for watching!

  • i enjoy watching your videos. ive always wanted to make sushi. i always end up just getting it at a restaurant. you seem like a super nice guy. keep up the great vids.

  • @dantastic87 Glad you enjoy them! Thanks for watching!

  • Jejeje

  • @ceedrik Thanks for watching!

  • I really like your vids. Thanks for sharing!

  • @justlou820 I appreciate the feedback. Thanks for watching!

  • where do you get the rolling mat? and can you roll the sushi without it?

  • @Mrstonester You can get sushi rolling mats at most kitchen stores and Asian markets. I've never tried rolling without mats. I guess if you had some kind of flexible mat you could improvise. Thanks for watching!

  • should the rice be at a cool temperature? or warm?

  • @vannnessaa I use my rice at room temperature. Thanks for watching!

  • I want to do this and not cut it at the end. Mmmmm, sushi burrito...

  • I have heard that the only reason people put the rice vinegar in the rice, is because back before there was refrigeration, the fish was not always so fresh and had a sour taste. So did people put the vinegar in it to replicate the taste of sour fish? Also why do people want to replicate that sour taste for? It just tastes better? When making white rice for dinner do people put rice vinegar in it as well? Plain white rice just has no flavor to me.

  • can i use other vinegar aside from rice vinergar???and a other kind of rice??

    :)

  • @yaniePinkish1427 I've never tried different vinegars or rices! Give it a try and tell us how it comes out. Thanks for watching.

  • @yaniePinkish1427 That you can, you can. However it is not recommended, that's why it exists sushi vinegar and if you don't have sushi vinegar you have to prepare it yourself (very easy). I haven't seen any sushi recipe that includes another type of vinegar lol

  • @yaniePinkish1427 i normally use white vinegar, add some sugar and a little bit of salt. i've never tried using rice vinegar before so i don't know if the results are the same, but the results for mine so far are really good ^_^

  • Am I supposed to eat the black material? Is it edible? I found this Japanese restaurant and the food is delicious. I would like to try some sushi rolls, but I am still suspicious about the raw fish. What about the black part? Do I eat that or take it off?

  • @AizenSamaKingX Hi! Thanks for your questions. The black part is really dark green. It's called nori and is a kind of paper made from seaweed. You can eat it! If you don't want to try raw fish you can have sushi without it. Although raw fish is popular in sushi, sushi is not only about raw fish. Sushi is more about rice and vinegar. Cooked fish, smoked fish, vegetables, egg, and other ingredients can be used to make sushi. So go try it out! Thanks for watching!

  • Rice wine vinegar is my absolute favorite... I learned to make sushi a long time ago and its so much better when you make it yourself sometimes it is hard to get sushi grade fish so I usually make vegetable sushi or sushi with smoked salmon at home and eat my favorite spicy tuna sushi when my family and I go out for sushi. Its so nice to make it at home though for dinner parties and stuff :D!

  • @mychocolateromance True! At your sushi making parties if you put a few tablespoons of vinegar in the water used to keep hands wet, the vinegar kills many bacteria and other germs. Thanks for watching!

  • Ive used this "recipe" several times... Its WAY cheaper to make this stuff yourself instead of buying it... I bought eight seaweed sheets at walmart for 1.79.. rice is cheap... and Avacado's are currently 97 cents each... I made the first few batches with immitation crab legs, however ive now begun substituting other meats... NY shell steaks cut into strips, grilled chicken tenderloins, and even marinated venison... just a heads up if you dont happen to have the fake crab on hand.

  • @rainmechanic Yes, it's generally less expensive to make your own sushi. Great variations with your own ingredients! Thank for sharing and for watching!

  • that´s not California roll but Makisushi..In california roll you´ve got see-grass inside and rice outside...but nice preparing

  • @PunkWay88 See-Grass? Is that what you call the nori seaweed or is there something else in the roll? Thanks for your comment and for watching!
