Thank you for posting this. This will be played at my funeral (hopefully years and years from now). I am utterly mesmerized by this extraordinarily beautiful miracle of a song!!!
I am a thinker by nature, so it takes very little to make me ponder life but I am listening to this truly mesmerising beautiful piece of music at the moment for the thought process it inspires. This is definitely music that provokes deep thought and is making me think of a lost soul.
Wow....three weeks later and no comments since mine. Expected some "joker" to have written some dumb reply/comment.....guess the morons wouldn't look at such a video....unless they stumbled across "Athene" in the hope of seeing a pair of tits!!
@inyourgenes ...What's wrong.. why are you so upset with nothing? And there is nothing wrong with God or the Belief in God.<in case you were saying God had nothing to do with this piece? I hope you feel better, or less stressed, or that whatever frustrates you goes away.
So haunting. Stunning. Thats what humanity is....the ability to write such a composition. Nothing to do with God. Us. Humans. Our ability to be wonderful whilst others operate at the other end of the spectrum and are so negative in every way.
I was surprised to learn that this was composed just 16 years a go in 1993. In part it reminds me of a medieval chant, so beautiful and haunting at the same time.
This song was written by the great Orthodox composer, John Tavener. He wrote it in memory of a family friend, Athene Hariades, a greek actress and student who was tragically killed in a cycling accident in 1993.
He said, "Her beauty, both outward and inner, was reflected in her love of acting, poetry, music, and the Orthodox Church.
Indeed, "may flights of Angels sing thee to thy rest".
...that never fails to send shivers down my spine when I ever I hear that. What a shame there has been so few views, but I'm glad I'm the first comment. I first heard that at the Funeral Of Diana, Princess of Wales, I found it so fitting to such a sombre moment, as the service ended and she was carried out by the soldiers....That is truly a magnificient piece of music....
If there is ever a remake of the "Quest of the Avatar," this should be the song played when you see the symbol of infinity.
;w; I wanna go back into choir just to sing this song...

I think it was composed in memory of a little girl, Athene, half-Greek - who died. Which makes me wonder, is the little in the photographs, Athene..

I first heard this watching Princess Diana's funeral on tv. This moves me to tears every time I hear it.

Tavener bases his music on Greek Orthodox which gives it extraordinary poignancy, this piece gives me goosebumps.

The visuals are a little trippy...
The music is beautiful of course.

This song has that kind of awe and spirituality, a forever attachment to a lost life.
I am an atheist, but this doesn't stop me from appreciating this fine work

Absolutely stunning.
I first heard it at Princess Di's funeral, and I was fixed upon it in my soul.
It never fails to move me to the eternal, and it always sets my gaze upon God.
