@youngdrummer3 - You should never not tryout because you feel you can't compete.....Jerome lost at the store level several times before the got this opportunity.....He just made the best of it when it counted to the most....C'mon...get in it and kick ass....
@TheBeatSmith i appreciate the kind words, but unfortunately some of these players have been playing for 20 years.. a kid playing for 7 has no business in there lol
@youngdrummer3 - Sorry you feel that way, but to be honest, I understand, it can be intimidating but the only way to beat fear is to face it head on. So what, some guy or girl has better chops. they didnt start that way. I'm sure some cat playing for 2 years would fear your playing skills.....So all you need is a good solid solo and wait for those cats you fear to have a bad day at the drum off.....and you slip right past them to the store finals.....In 3 years you will be at the finals.
i am not meaning to offend any joey jordison fan, i myself am i joey fan. but... this dude owns joey by a long shot. joey is mainly known for double bass and this dude is just is good, if not better at double bass, and... everything else.
Joey Jordison is beast at drumming, the Rev was definitely one of the best, Neil Peart is a legend, but one thing they all hav in common.......they're well known. for drummers who are not well known, this guy is amongst the greats, simply cuz i had to hear it 3 times just to be sure i wasnt imagining the greatness
Great versatility, musical phrasing (listen to how he places his triplets, lovely), dynamic solo construction, showmanship (call/response, stick tricks), and really solid technique and groove. Yet I'm kinda put off by the hipster image and the crowd for some reason. Don't let that stop you though, this guy's gooooood.....
This guy is a great player but the only thing that bothers me about these "Drum Off" things is that everybody plays rehearsed solos. What ever happened to some good old fashioned improvisation.
@xXxIFORSAKENxXx that was a cross between practiced rhythms and improvisations, if that was 100% rehearsed the dude has serious OCD. it was too spontaneous but yet elegant.

The Drum off as a competition is a joke, they don't give you scores, don't announce what order the competitors finish and oh by the way it's an amateur contest in the fine print it states that if you make more than $20,000 per year from music you are not qualified to win. Nothing groundbreaking played here, seen plenty of drummers play the same ideas.
@muzical26 your right is some points but you must realize some of the greatest musicians are in the streets because this world is now dominated by pop music, search up Amazing Bass Player here on youtube click the one with over 5 million view so you can see the real Jesus
from church drummer to church drummer skip the haters Doc! You got skills and deserved to win. i been watching your clips for some time and im impressed everytime!
You are an idiot. This is a drum off where you show off skills and styles, completely different to a band. Also i am sure he is competent enough to play in a band.
I agree. Flood is a very awesome drummer but it could get boring to someone who doesn't drumming. Being groovy and giving up a few of the techniques would make it more "musical". Mike Portnoy even stated that.
Oh, I absolutely acknowledge that he's good. I thought I made that VERY clear. The man has got skill pouring out of him like sweat. This is patently obvious. I could practice every waking moment for the rest of my life, and he could still wipe the floor with me on an OFF day. Mad respect.
My only point is that I just wish he'd use his talents for something a little more useful. Proving that you can play fast and play technically is bloody boring, and sounds like a mess. Not so very musical.
I get irritated when people assume fast = "good." The man obviously has incredible skill and impressive, world-class technique, but there's very little musicality in what he's doing. When someone just plays loud and fast and chaotic without any structure, it's just boring. It means they're using their talent in service of what amounts to masturbation. I can't touch him on my BEST day, but what's the point of any of it?
And as long as I'm on the subject, his cymbals sound like effing hubcaps.
Dude, theres a difference between playing fast single strokes in metal music, and fast fills with switching between strokes and accents. this dude is fast for all the right reasons. how can you even say he is chaotic without any structure. even though he plays fast he plays perfectly in time. you cant count it out in 4/4 time and he stays on time the entire time. its a lot more useful than you think. do your homework next time.
furthermore, he transitions from the snare and toms to the bass drum. his fast fills that he plays are actually very similar to tony roysters. so your basically saying the same for tony royster
I think the sound is probably due to the camera(phone?) used by the person recording it. The production is just bad. I can't even here the bass drum that much if at all. I'm sure it sound a lot better live.
No, He's using a single. Follow the rythmn, he's doing doubles. Also, the closed hi-hat fills, where crosses over for ex. you have to have your foot on the pedal.
Eddie Van Halen isn't Yngwie, and vice versa, Dave Roth isn't Sammy and vice versa, etc. etc. This guy is obviously talented and so is Jordison and the rest. If one guy isn't another as far as musical expression why does he have to "suck" or be considered "no good". After all I know plenty of great drummers who can't double bass like Jordison, doesn't make them bad or good, just different.
i love how drummers think dbl bass is everything and think theyre so amzing when they do a simple RLRLKK pattern down the toms or around the kit using a dbl bass pedal.
too many drummers abues the 2nd pedal thus they become overated like jordison
a agree to an extent, i think overusing the second pedal like thomas haake from meshuggah is what makes him so interesting, the polyrhythms and stuff that he can achieve, but i totally get what you mean when you get a drummer that just rolls the double kick with total disregard to whether it actually fits or not
portnoy: technically sound. he has the versatility to play very smooth, textural songs (these walls) to headbangers (as i am). he plays in crazy time signatures, has chops like a mad man, and has got a deeeep pocket for a metal drummer (kinda metal haha). i find him very tasty and brings a lot of flavor to DT.
jordison: well he's very boring and i also can't understand why people like him haha, unless of coure they're ingnorant.....which is the majority of his fan base
... Why the fuck do you think that jesus has anything to do with his drum talents. He would be equally as good if he spent the same time he has already spent learning drums even if he was a satanist.
