@georgenc40 That scooter was a Tank Courier, which was designed with the roof. Unfortunately, they no longer make them. Which really sucks since mine got stolen and completely trashed before I recovered it, and I wish I could get another one.
Thanks this helped me understand what I am about to do to derestrict (remove restricting washer) my Yamaha C3.
I'm considering changing the roller weights also but am not sure I fully understand the advantage. When you say the goal is to "have your engine at the optimal RPM for the most power at all stages of acceleration" does this mean that putting lighter weights in will improve my rate of acceleration as well as give me a higher top speed when going uphill?
@mjoa1 Engines have an rpm where they produce the most horsepower, the goal of messing with the weights in a CVT is to have your engine running at that RPM all the time when you are moving. Lighter weights can help, especially if you or your scooter is heavier, with getting a little more speed up hills. But you don't want to go too light or it might be difficult for your scooter to reach top speed, or you might be running it at higher RPM than optimal.
No, your top speed will not get any faster by changing the weights, unless for some reason your weights weren't heavy enough to achieve the maximum gear ratio in the first place. The goal with changing the weights is to have your engine at the optimal RPM for the most power at all stages of acceleration. If you have an RPM guage, and time to try different weights, this is pretty easy to test.
from what i no, heavy weight = fast from stopped but lower top speed, light weights = slow start but a faster top speed, so to get the highest top speed should i get the lightest weight possible?
hey, do you think it would be possible to start the scooter with a non-impact drill turning the variator (counter clockwise?)? Im about to buy a scooter with a bad starter and broken kick start...I want to start the engine before paying.
I've been "stuck" with a Chinese scooter ever since I lost my motorcycle due to finanical issues, and I *just* blew my variator belt earlier today! Been hunting for a good example on how to remove and repair the drive on this ChiCom POS, but this vid was actually the BEST example of how to do so! I won't be changing the roller weights, but your video shows what I need to do in order to replace my belt. Thanks man!!
Where in the hell are you working on this scooter? Did you breeak down with no warning. Looks like you're sitting on the side of the road in gravel. And the sun is in your face. You wouldn't make a very good gunfighter. Clint Eastwood ALWAYS had the sun to his back, never shining in his eyes. Helpful video, though. Thanks.
hey, nice work, Im trying also to get more out of my scooter, its a gy6 150cc engine scooter, but it doesn't go more than 48 MPH, why? i think because of the variators are the same as any other smaller engine scooter, and becase the CDI clearly limits the revs once I get to 48mph, it's has a lot of take of power... if you can please give me some tips on how to know what variators to get... should I measure the wight of my variators?
Is it that the higher RPM gives you a better torque with the CVT's gear ratios? I think this would help with the going up hill.
What is the disadvantage of setting a higher RPM for the same gear ratio? Is it that your maximum speed is now reduced? I guess that the RPM is limited by the engine so at the highest gear ratio, you would be going slower than if you had a lower RPM for ratio? I really don't know but am curious!
So, if I am correct, you sacrificed max speed for better torque?
Thanks for the great video. I have a Piaggio BV250 and I'll be doing all the maintenance myself, except for the real hard stuff. Hopefully in the future, I'll try some of that stuff that you did.
hello, i have a problem with my new GY6 engine if u can help please!?? its aone weak old and if im riding my scooter by my self it sounds okeay!..if i have a passanger with me the engine sounds like wants to die and then the bike well go !? so every time i make a stop then try to go again i have the same problem?
12 volt impact wrench? how handy :-), too bad its difficult to find a non neumatic one over here... just in case you can manage to do it using a modified drill with an 11/16 and do the trick.
BTW... does the cvt fan have to be made of cast iron? something hapened to me thanks to the weak material, the fan broke and the cvt was spitting pieces inside the cover, in the process it destroyed the belt, clutch, magneto and some weights; not to mention the hole in the cover from one of the pieces
you wouldnt want a cast iron clutch fan because that thing would probably get to hot. that fan didnt break because of weak material. there was something that you did wrong or something else happened in the case that made it break. even if you leave one washer out you would get that same effect that you had on you scooter. not trying to be an ass just trying to give you some info that might help you with that problem.

you should have taken the plastic body part above the variator off so you can clean the air filter and make it easier to work. it's only 3 screws or so..good video though..
I'm about ready to change the weights and belt on my Yahmaha Zuma. I've never used an impact wrench before but intend to buy one like yours tomorrow. The question I have is should I be careful about how much torque I put on the variator nut when put it back on? I have a torque wrench with a 2 1/2 foot handle. Should I use this to tighten that nut? Thanks for the video, BTW. I was going to pay $100 to get this done by a dealer.
the setup with the kick starter and cover looks the same though on mine.
i have a couple of questions. when you remove the belt and variator do you have clear access to the crankcase seals?
i also noticed that there was no tensioner to make sure the belt was tightened to a certain specification. is the clutch wheel and variator already tightened to the right specifications for a new belt to be installed?
have you ever had the problem of the centre of the front pully getting worn by the crankshaft..resulting in its will just spin and wont grip on the crankshaft..
2 questions. 1) I did not see any grease in the CVT where the rollers went. I recently pulled mine off and opened it and mine was full with grease. Which is correct? 2)What kind of rollers are you using and what is the difference in yours and the stock round ones? Thanks for the video!!!
No grease goes in the CVT unless you have something strange I've never heard of.
I'm using the Dr. Pully Variator set which has sliding weights. I guess they are supposed to wear better and I like the feel of them better. Seems smoother.
With less weight in the variator there is less pressure forcing the belt outword. The result is you have to achieve a higher RPM before you get the same gear ratio. If you mess with the Contra spring and weights you can try to keep your motor in a certain RPM range throughout as you speed up.
I think it might be a tight fit at 6'2" to be honest with you. I am between 5'10" and 5'11", and my helmet isn't very tall. Once I'm in it's ok, but I think an extra 3 or 4 inches would cause problems. When I first got it I used to hit my head sometimes getting on and off, never happens anymore. I guess it also depends on if your hight is in your legs or body.
Adjusting the weights and contra spring should improve accelaration accross the whole range. It's a process though and you need to play with different combinations.
Thank you so much for your Video. I just purchased a Tank Touring 150DE. Do you know anything about it? How fast does the tank 150cc goes? Can one take it on the highway, It's your Courier still very new? Why so much work. Will you produce more videos. Can they be downloaded?

you shouldn't use an impact spanner for variators, since they sit on the crankshaft and shocking that is not very healthy for the bearings etc.
