  • Sounds like a Harley idling through a pot and pan factory.

  • I read something in an interview with him where he talked about developing a machine-like consistency with his technique. I think it shows in the stuff I've seen from him. It's an interesting sound - although I wonder if he can also NOT sound like that when needed...? I'd like to work up the stuff he can do so I'd have those kinds of options myself, of course. Just sayin....

  • Gay.

  • Auto, or 240p? Hhmmm...

  • 9:06 Mike is having a seizure.

  • god!

  • The video should be called "Mike Mangini WTF solo". Hahaha.

    This man is amazing.

  • he's very good but he doesn't make such impression on me

  • Unreal.

  • If god fell in a helicopter made of eargasm... now you know how it sounds

  • i tell you this is ass difficult keep that groove with feet.....!!! Indian sioux Style!!!! LOL

  • I'm a drummer and I hate his solos, people get bored when you watch 10 minutes of technicality, you don't have to play on the cymbals alone for 2 minutes.

  • @Xx25BeasT96xX If you're a drummer you would be able to look past what other people see, and appreciate the technicality. The fact of the matter is a solo is meant to show off ability. He does that damn well

  • @explodingpimp

A solo is not always supposed to show your skill, it is one of the functions it serves, but some drummers focus more on having a good groove rather than playing something very technical. Someone like Stanton Moore always has a nice groove, it's always about the groove. Not saying that Magini is bad, he's like one of the best in the world, but there are different types of drum solos not only super technical ones.

  • Attacked by mosquitos at 8:50

  • ahahahaha

  • well that wasnt very good at all

  • If he lost one hand it wouldn't matter that much cause he already plays better with one hand than most drummers do with two.

  • 68 dislikes...huh? How's that possible?!

  • Sick! Reminds me of Terry Bozzio.

  • @sidelingscroll

Yes, because he sucks and I'd rather kill myself than play drums, just because he does. Sincerely,

    - Mike Portnoy

  • its clearly cheat codes.

  • @ drummerzful

Watch his solo during a Steve Vai gig. He can do a tremolo drumming in the snare with one hand AND with accents.

  • I can't Understand it. why he didn't exploded at 9:05?

  • yes indeed he is fast... but playing drum is not about speed.... afterall the groove is much more important when u r playing drums...

  • Kind of makes you not want to play the drums ever again.

  • маньяк

  • is it sped up from 6:45-7:08?

  • @XxbMcxX23 no he's just fucking fast

  • @XxbMcxX23 i can see how u think that. but its not. when he plays he jerks around a lot as u can tell. and if ur talking about his drums rolls as well. no. he holds the record for fastest drum roll. and can put that into his solos very well

  • Nivel Dios..

  • @Dexarkun I only know one word that sums that up, and that's a big fuckin 'lol'... I like Portnoy to, but stop that fanboy attitude.

  • @Dexarkun Mangini is playing more like a musician than a drummer here, like everyone SHOULD do. Stop bitching.

  • @Dexarkun people who can't play spell drummer with one 'm'

  • Holy crap. This guy is unbelievable.

  • Holy and unholy fuck...

    Welcome to DT mate.

  • Bonham did that footwork with only one feet.

  • very big shit...

  • ZZZZZZZZZZZZzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz

  • A little Bozzio-esque, but fantastic.

  • @DCussen

Thats what i thought about the beggining too haha

  • What is this? I don't even... Yes I do!

    GODLIKE!

  • actually, drum solo starts from 6:00

  • Holy crap hes got some fast moving hands!

  • ESSE CARA E FODA PES E MAOS INDEPENDENTES O CARA CONSEGUE FAZER UMS BAGULHO LOKO

  • Mike Mangini has a big problem... he can't learn more about playing the drums :)

  • @HiFisch94 He can learn samba!!!! hahahaha

he would be a great samba player!!! o.o

  • im pretty much paralyzed in awe after seeing this guy play. Someone bring me a wheelchair...

  • Welcome to Dream Theater!

  • Holy...! Do you guys understand how incredibly complex that really was?! I swear there are parts that look like the playback was sped up (check out 7:00 thru 7:07, for instance). Wow!!!

  • @mrstrypes Not many drummers listened to this drum solo obviously, it's fucking amazing how independant he is with his legs and feet. Lovely. As many have said, waiting for him to join the songwriting process.

  • 65 people missed the like button

  • You GOT TO see this vid with Mangini. The best drum solo ever!

    watch?v=9x6HnVLdNiI&feature=related

Its a shame it only has 4500 views....!?

  • Unfortunatly some of you that left your coment here, knows absolutely nothing about drumming. When I saw Mike Mangini playing for the first time, I realised clearly why is the number one today. There are some things that He does that "nobody" can do. He also plays all styles of rock better than everybody I have ever seen, and this is not only my opinion, He was choosen between the best drummers in the world that could play in that level and style to became the new Dream Theater's drummer.

  • In this video you can see the best gravity blast rhythm ever and the typical manginian crossed-arms passage, which is wonderful and super hard to play, I think the harder rhythm ever on drums

  • "He does things with one limb that some people can't do with two"- John petrucci

  • for people who loves to see spinning upside down and all those gimmick drummers, this is really boring. but for drummers who understands the technicality in drumming, its a difrent story.

  • Amen yo the double MM welcome to the best band in the galaxy

  • the problem of show off some technique stuff is the lake of understanding most ppl have about it, they symple prefer to listen lady gaga..

  • Awesome speed and mind control of the patterns and sticks. 5 Stars.

  • 4:06 wow that takes skills and a lot of coordination...

  • So this is the man we'll be seeing onstage where Mike Portnoy used to be. His drumming seems to be fine, but the question is, how's his spitting?

  • 6:27

    ACTING LIKE A ROBOT...

dudu dum dudu dum dududu dudu dum

    (symphony of destruction)

  • Why does he lead with his left foot?

  • THE NEW DT DRUMMER! CONGRATULATIONS MIKE!!

  • This is over the moon.Watch out Portnoy......your history.

I think Portnoys new band licks ass.

  • Oh wow, his leading with ihs left foot on this one. Nice

  • Mike Portnoy couldn't do any of this.

  • @senorvolasco who cares, I bench press more than both Portnoy and Mangini, nobody cares. DT had 7 guys audition and all of them could play dance of eternity just fine, its not about technicality when you get to this level, its about who is right for the band. Portnoy was right for the band for 25 years. Without him, nobody is even talking about Mangini right now. I"m stoked about Mangini, but lets not get into a pissing contest, DT isn't a sport metal band, they write real music

  • Black Clouds and Silver Linings was a monumentally shitty album. I'm hoping it was because of Mike Portnoy's obvious dominating influence over DT's songwriting and not because the writing talents of the rest of the group are deteriorating. Hopefully injecting some serious talent in the form of a more level-headed drummer is just what Dream Theater needs. And I think skill level DEFINITELY matters when you get to DT's level, as well as how the guy fits as a creative influence into the band.

  • I don't mean you don't have to have skill. I mean that there are at least 10 guys who can play anything DT needs them to play. At this level, there are a few guys who can do basically anything they want. So the whole "mangini is better than Portnoy" argument is useless. If you put Rusty Cooley in for Petrucci, that band would suck. Cooley can do things Petrucci doesnt' do, but does that mean Petrucci cant'? No. He just doesn't. But that doesnt' mean Cooley is automatically right for the band.

  • @senorvolasco why was it shitty it's in my top 3

  • I'm cool with how you like it and all that, but IMO:

The songwriting is uninspired and boring in every aspect. The lyrics are cheesy in every song, and not good cheesy, like Systematic Chaos, where it was somewhat toned down and still had some cool music under it. Even in the songs that aren't the obligatory, label exec-pleasing fodder (Rite of Passage, Wither) their compositions are strained, jagged. TSF sounds like their favorite riffs from the suite glued together end to end.

  • @pthompson2010 Having said that, I think Mangini will be great for the band, but not because he is on the varsity squad compared to Portnoy's junior varsity. They are both varsity, and we are but humble listeners.

  • @pthompson2010 AMEN!

  • I'm so stoked he got the gig... WTG Mike!!!

  • HOLY SH*T!!! he´s amazingly coordinated...AND THE LAST 2 MINUTES WERE F*CKING CRAZY!!!! Dream Theater will never be the same without Portnoy, but this man is incredible!!!!!

  • Amazing

    Great choice, Dream Theater

  • I think Minnemann kicks this guy's ass, to be honest. I really hope the position goes to him and not Mangini. Not that Mangini isn't a good drummer... But Minnemann is cleaner, faster, and more creative overall.

  • bits of that you'd swear the tape had been sped up... amazing

  • @jimmymarquez TE GUSTA EL PICO!!!!!!! ahahahha

  • the last 4 minutes are intense this guy is fast as hell. but its not all about flash; hes got talent.

  • I would have preferred Minnemenn, but I really think the DT gig is going to Mangini. God I can't even imagine what the new album is sounding like.

  • i have friends who hate this guy because they cant stand the sound of just drums not in a rock song but mike mangini cant be in a band cuz honestly hes blow every1 off the stage he doesnt need to follow a specific beat he creats his own as he goes along his coordination is amazing his speed is unheard of and the want he can completely ignore his feet and keep a perfect beat with them while doing something 100% different with his hands is insane mike mangini creats a work of art everytime

  • Bravo!

  • algumas partes são realmente uma bosta

  • if he really is dream theater's new drummer, then it looks like he's more than capable of filling portnoy's shoes!

  • John Bonham is still the best all around Drummer.

  • hard to do but born to listen

  • Wow. Before this I never knew what WFD was or who Mike Mangini is - that was pretty incredible. Great difficult solo! I wish I could stuff like that.

  • Technically totally crazy, that 5/16 bass pedal rhythem going over 4/4 and then all the different things he's playing while keeping steady...

I agree, I don't like his cymbals, way to clear sound! But that's personal.

  • Craziest Shit I Ever Seen!

  • i wonder how many times he will hit a snare drum in his lifetime. the dudes a machine!

  • @MANNT1S

Approximately 624,534,987 times. Give or take a thousand lol. The next question is how many sticks will he break in a lifetime?

  • ummm somebody turn mike off from the fast forward mode!!! the guy's a lunatic behind the set!!

  • 46 people dont know how technical this solo is

  • Stick around and watch until the end. It gets pretty exciting at around 8:40. I hope the rumors about Dream Theater are true.

  • Sounds like a bum banging on trash cans

  • @jgraz42 stfu if u got nothing better to say

  • @nastynash96 go fuck your mommy in the anushole, that dude sucks, Buddy Rich would teach him a lesson and he's dead...

  • @jgraz42 really man did you just say that? ur a fucktard. if anybody agrees with me hit the like button lol

  • I'm sorry but his base drum beat is supposed to stay constant..and it doesn't. It speeds up and slows down and gets out of groove when he's not playing with his hands like 3:48 to 4:01 just listen to the base drums. All arguments aside, this guy is Great. But not perfect. A great drummer to me is on that can keep time perfectly....if at any time, he can't in a fill , then he shouldn't be doing that fill. Mangini to me, does not remember this all the time. He lets his hands get ahead of his feet

  • @08Revelator i'd like to see you try doing that.

  • 8:55 to 9:11 doesn't look human LOL

We have talented MUSICIANS like this....but all kids wanna listen to is robotic, unemotional drum tracks behind all of thier pop and rap songs....its a shame. Anyone can program an electronic drum machine......TRY picking up some sticks and sit behind a REAL drum set.

ENCOURAGE your kids to put the video games down and put a REAL instrument in thier hands.........it would make the world a better place.

  • There is so much Terry Bozzio over him, in sound and style.

    This is stunning!!

  • i think he has an autopilot button for his feet

  • I don't even have to be a drummer to appreciate this! He's got amazing talent! that doesn't even justify what I just saw. I'll just go with speechless....

  • :O I think I just found my new favorite drummer... I need to find new pants, though.

  • wikipedia says that petrucci already admited that he is dream theater's official new drummer.

  • That's it! I quit!

  • im gona need a new pair of pants

  • genius

  • he is using speed hack !

  • @DrMorbid, all in all what I was trying to say is that Mike kicks ass, and that he'd be a good fit for DT. if he doesn't join, that's cool too, it'd just be nice to see him on tour again!

  • Such a Terry Bozzio solo.

  • A mind blowing drummer. Dream Theatre should grab Mike.

  • @DLRisVH that what i was thinking

  • yes hes technical a lot of drummers are, but where drummers really shine is in creative ability.

  • I don't get why there are ANY thumbs down on this... Where are the videos, CD's, DVD's, popularity from these people??? I'd dare each and every one of you to even try to compare to Mike... Good luck! WTG Mike, you got my vote to replace MP in DT!

  • @zapor67 Dude he's a teacher on Berklee. He loves his job. Never in a million years would he leave it for DT. Also keep in mind that DT has no chance to pay him at least a quarter of what he is being paid at Berklee.

He may record an album (and he does so from time to time) but there's no chance he would tour with any band.

  • @DrMorbid Dude I hope you wash your feet before you stick 'em in your mouth... HAHAHA Mike Mangini is the new drummer for Dream Theater!!!

  • He reminds me of Bozzio

  • Symbols,, ADUH ! . Before you can comment on a highly respected berkeley school of music teacher with a degree in music theory and percussion instruments .Who held world speed records for single and double stroke rolls .I would learn how to spell the English language . Thomas pridgen is the least musical drummer i have ever heard .All hard chops ,broken rhythm patterns that are not musical at all .He has know finesse .& plays the same broken fills over and over. .

  • not to put it down but is it just me or does he kinda start rushing around 1:45, and again at 1:54

  • hez da MAN!!!

  • This is classical percussion at its best. Its like taking a trap percussion piece and playing it on the kit. I respect that very much. I've taken trap pieces and transposed them to kit, it is very fun and mind expanding.

  • this solo reminds me of 85 % Moby Dick 15% Buddy Rich.Dude has much skill

  • Skillful: Yes. Tasteful: No.

  • @DeadlyNinjaDrummer Mike Mangini - Fire Garden Suite

  • @TheChiFlows Exactly. If anyone doubts this man ability to be musical and tasteful, watch Fire Garden Suite, and you will change your mind about Mike Mangini.

  • you are realy realy an octubos man , you are very near to reach lars ulrich buddy ;) , but i vote for you ;)

  • I think it's interesting how forward his feel look when he's playing. A lot of guys have a more 90 degree bend at the knee.

  • @DarianGTR06

Haha very interesting indeed. After watching this video I kind of wondered if maybe I've been doing it wrong all this time! :P

  • Wow...Do you think he practices?

  • imagine playing over that foot ostinato... then imagine playing those polyrythms over that ostinato... then imagine chaning from duple to triple meter with all subdivisions over that foot ostinato... now imagine playing it that fast. this guy is a nut. enough said

  • As a drummer you can truly appreciate what Mike brings to the table. This solo is pure genius and whilst it might sound the way you think it should, it's best appreciated by realising that what he can do very few people in the world can replicate.

  • most people either watch the first minute or so and click off this video, or they watch the whole thing and don't understand how good Mike's coordination is, and how freakishly technical this solo is. Its a very complicated piece. I wish more people could understand and respect how complicated this solo is.

  • @Sornzora yep it does not sound right to them because each of his limb has its own rythm. its like having more than 1 brain.

  • @Sornzora He is the Drummer's drummer. Only a drummer will ever truly appreciate his genius.

  • @Swmhunter that's not true. i only know how to play guitar and i think this is crazy. definitely one of the best drummers ever. all the different rythyms and and different tempos he does with his hands and feet.... just ridiculous.

  • @Sornzora liek if playing complicated stuff is the point of music xd

  • @Sornzora Very true. Now go seek out some Terry Bozzio solos... makes Mangini look like a hack. I'll be over in the corner, crying.

  • @Sornzora Its not all that complicated. Its got its parts that are techincal...dont get me wrong, but the fact that the ostinato bass drum line isnt that hard over what hes doing makes the piece 100x less complicated. Also this solo is either 1. HEAVILY influenced by bozzio ...or 2 . Stolen almost 80% from him, but its prolly a mixture of both. Basically my point is hes a good drummer, but to be compared with the technical greats like lang and minnemann and bozzio he just gets out played, badly

  • @Furiiiiouz Are you basing that on extensive studying of his footage, or off this video alone? Because technicality takes many different shapes - at the WFD competition the technicality he's featuring is his speed. And he indisputably has that in spades. If you want to see syncopation or odd time mastery, check some of his other vids. He absolutely IS one of the greats.

  • nice practice independence.. much respect!

  • pinche video todo culero

  • Too bad for you then that he shows of his skills instead of playing nice and groovy with a band...which he definitely can. This was performed on a world's fastest drummer event. What would you expect?

Now, about the repetitive sound, it's called a theme. You may like it or not, but it gives the solo a structure.I personally don't like his cymbals, but he may like them, and that is what matters the most. You may or may not understand what he was trying to create or do here, and I'll leave it there.

  • If you want groovy, listen to the bands he played in... :P

  • great comment...it seems like this kit was just thrown together at the last sec...it's not his usual set-up..missing his traditional hi-hats

  • it sounds terrible, you can get 5 years olds who can play some of the most technical guitar and drumwork in the world but could they string together a classic, a hit, no.

Skill does not equal good music, good music equals good music.

  • people have different views on whats good music...and my view is that if it's technical it's good....and no that doesn't mean fast, i mean complex polymetric shit like meshuggah, especially the song bleed!

  • Which is subjective...

  • lets just all bash a really talented drummer watch the sequence of the full kit over hand roll then shut the fuck up

  • technically proficient, yes. musically interesting , no.

  • Musical solo? Check Rod Morgestein or Omar Hakim (among others I can recommend.

  • Two more: Gavin Harrison (Porcupine Tree) and Carter Beauford (DMB). BTW, I never get tired of seen Mangini.

  • I admire his technical skill, his hands are insanely fast. But the musicality of this solo is just sub-par. It's repetitive, and while technically excellent, it just doesn't sound good

  • this sound shorible

  • Holy Shitballs

  • to s1rqu33falot:

Mike Mangini holds the record as the fastest drummer in the world. No one has matched his hand speed. Mike is faster than those other drummers with one hand. The symbols and the drums sound terrible.

  • in what way is mike mangini a mediocre drummer? that's like saying that paul gilbert is a mediocre guitarist

  • worse Cymbals in the World sounds like tin foil for god sakes

  • to darkoverload18:

The cymbals are real terrible but he probably got a lot of money to play them.

  • they are supposed to sound like that, one is a china and is supposed to have a trashy sound, and the rest he has cymbal stacks which are meant to produce that trashy explosive sound you hear, also bear in mind the audio quality isn't very good

  • 1:54 he hits his floor tom and has to ix it all without loseing beat

  • jajaja funny intro hahaha

  • 4 stars
