Ummm...I think you should really review Chris Degarmo's work. And btw, Progressive goes hand in hand with "unnecessary complications as you call it". that's Basically what defines it. On the over technical side you should check Wilton's work. There's no other Petrucci but that doesn't mean the man cant chop. Check Dinosaur rock.dot reviews for details.
Where do you find that definition? To me progressive music is about going beyong what is normal and creating something new and different like Genesis and Yes did in the seventies, like IQ does today (with our without complications). And Iäm a fan of Dream Theater as well.
Good for you to like DT. You can browse around for the History of Prog Rock. Better on British, as they invented it. You'll find that in its roots the original name was Avant Garde as in what it goes in the front or Spear Head. Which later on translated to Progressive from Progress, not Progression(as in music concept). Though Chris Degarmo's main writing ability is precisely messing with the Chord Progressions in songs to make very particular out of ordinary (Pentatonic) harmonic structures.
Being Progressive implies complication. I think there's no better example of Not complicated rock than Punk Rock. If you think Queensryche is not complicated, research what I told you. As I've never heard of a Prog Rock band that doesn't do complicated stuff.
I know it's complicated, but there are certain degrees of complications. Some of the music within the genre is accordning to me just unnessery complicated stuff that just to show the technincal abilities of the musicians and emotion and music is left behind. And I know the word unnessery is very subjective. I just prefer this kind of prog metal in front of 15 minute long guitar show songs. If you don't mind!
Yes, I know what you mean. Queensryche's music was "progressive" in the sense that it was complex, challenging, and showed a great understanding of scales, chords, and composition, yet it was never devoid of emotion (or melody), which some progressive music tends to be. If anything, their music was very emotional, dramatic, and dynamic. I think they had the perfect balance of technique and feeling.
@Apostolios It was. I saw em open for Plastica (haha - j/k) at the beginning (chicago - 11/1988) and the end (Peoria IL - 4/1989) of their US tour. It was good both times but MUCH BETTER later in the tour. Later in the tour, they dropped Breaking the Silence and I don't believe in love and played Needle Lies and Chemical Youth. They were DEFINITELY trying to play their heavier stuff for Metallica's crowd. It worked - place went nuts for both of those tunes. I DID!!!

Kirk Hammet at the left side of the stage?

You mean the man with the drink? Probably, they toured together.

They did, see my comment below. You can see the apparatus of the Metallica stage at left

Do you know where the Serial Ulrichnator was as this video occurred? Oh the days...

Wilton plays the guitar, he doesn't stand with a drink on the left side of the stage.

I spent 5 dates with them as they toured with Metallica. What a great band, never to be duplicated.
