  • mygrandads friend,my grandad

  • Indeed it is a version of the Leaving of Liverpool, but there is no "authorised version", It is part of a tradition which constantly evolved. I can recall an evening spent on the forward messdeck, spent contriving a few n verses for this song, which, by the way, was also recorded by Nana Mouskouri, would you believe it!

  • This is the Leaving of Liverpool :D

    With slightly different lyrics.

  • I love yoe Liam and will meet you in another better life.

  • I have never fealt a loss of someong outside me family as hard as I found when My hero, my icon, and my idol passed away. Though I know he is in a better place I will miss his kind and loving nature and his passionate music that spoke deep to my soul. Never will we see an equal to Liam he was truly a one of kind singer and I will deeply miss him and hold his songs and words close to my heart until I hopfully get to see him again someday. Farewell to thee my old friend.

  • i always thought that guy was about the best ballad voice i heard ..and still do . Thanks for it all Liam

  • Since his passing in Dec of '09, it has been hard for me to find the words to express the sadness inside my heart. Even now, I find it hard to type for the tears that blur my sight.

Liam, you are so missed, and so loved by so many.

  • he was a ledgend

  • This was one of Bob Dylan's Witmark Demo's

  • Never again will we see his equal, as a person or musician. Rest in peace old friend.

  • see his face, you can see the love on it....he was a really good irishman...

im really sorry about his death...rest in peace Liam!!1

  • And a beautiful person, in reality.

We all grieve for his loss, my friends.

We all miss him. And all our children will lack his presence, worst of all

    You, maryattracta,

you do not cry alone, my dear. As Liam once told me: We all grieve with your loss, my friend.

He was a beautiful person. Musical archive. An Irish landmark.

We ALL grieve with your loss, my dear. Ass we weep for our own, as well.

Liam would have it that way.

  • Few men can be said to be the end of an era, But Liam Clancey is the is the ulimate in Irish singing ,God rest and protect you and you'rs

  • Have tears running down my faceas I listen to the beauty of this voice. singer and song fused together in beautiful harmony. Unique. RIP Forever in my heart. Thank you.

  • lovely voice, sad news another one gone

  • Very Sad News.

Ar Dheis Dé go raibh a anam Dílis.

  • @cormacobric greeting from upperaustria and please translate this gaelic sentense for me liam RIP a singer in gods arms tom

  • @Kilbwerk It means 'may his faithful soul be at gods side' . . . . .its quite a common tribute to pay to a deceased person in Ireland . . its used the same way RIP is used in the english language.

  • An Icon has passed. Rest in peace, and thank you for the music!!

  • @maletnessscott Totally agree with those sentiments.

  • RIP Liam

  • rip liam clancy

  • R.I.P. to ya Liam, Gent and legend. Spent my childhood listening to the Clancy brothers. Heavy in my heart to learn of Liams death today. Ireland can be proud of a world famous Legend. God bless you Liam

  • I'd like to offer a comparison here that might help. I absolutely love lobster. I'd walk a mile for prime rib. Both are wonderful and wonderfully different. They are unbeatable together. I've got solo pieces that Liam Clancy does that I think are incomparable. Some of Tommy Makem's pieces will make me stop what I'm doing to listen (now you know why there was that tie up on the highway). But put prime rib and lobster together and it's a feast. Makem and Clancy together is a duo that has no equal.

  • Both fine singers. As we say in Spanish: Para gustos los colores ;-)

  • first seen liam and tommy in the baymount in strandhill in 1977 and will always be and admirer of his unique style of prose and song. a true irish legend

  • dat song is coppied from the song...the leaving of liverpool.just listen its total the same

  • uh, no shit

  • Recollections by Judy Collins released 1969.

The tune was in public domain.

  • About this song in his book "No Direction Home - The Life & Music of Bob Dylan " Robert Shelton wrote :

    " FAREWELL. 1. Copyright Warner Bros.Inc 1963b 73; 3. Judy Collins; RECOLLECTIONS (Elektra EKS 74055) 4. W & D; BOB DYLAN; 5. First published in " Broadside " under the title "Fare-The-Well. "

It's a mistake .recording by The Kingston Trio Decca master # 13,548 for the album NICK -BOB -JOHN released December 7, 1964 on title Farewell (Fare Thee Well My Own True Love)

  • Never recorded by Bobby Dylan but in early years 60 by The Kingston Trio, Anita Carter and Judy Collins

  • JDev82,

this version (lyrics) is by Bob Dylan, from the early 1960s. And yes, the melody is the Leaving of Liverpool.

  • this is just an alterred version of leaving of liverpool, no?

  • Liam isn't dead pablobhoy O.o

  • RIP Liam a truly great man.

  • fantastic song.

liam is the best singer of all time. period. i love me some luke kelly too but ill have to go with Liam.

  • NO NO NO tommy makem is the greatest singer of all time without tommy liam would have never stared singing. i knew the both of them

  • Comment removed

  • Tommy may have had a stronger voice but no where near as quality as Liam, not even close, and I loved Makem but Clancy is in a class by himself. The only one even close is maybe Luke Kelly

  • no no no. Tommy had a much much higher quality voice. Nobody compares to tommy's lovely lovely baritone voice. nobody.

  • I guess we just disagree, but I don't for a minute want to give the impression I don't believe Makem was a great singer. He just didn't have the texture and expression in his voice that Liam did, especially with ballads. Also, I believe if you were to take a poll of people who love Irish music as to who was the best Tommy would finish behind both Clancy & Kelly.

  • That is ridiculous. Tommy had much better singing style and had much more emotion in his singing. And Kelly shouldnt even be in this conversation. Tommy was ONLY known as the Godfather of Irish music and the Bard Of Armagh because HE WAS THE BEST. Ok. Thats it. Nobody is better than Tommy.

  • You are truly a dedicated fan, Makem was absolutely great and that I will never deny. And although he wasn't quite a good a singer as Clancy and Kelly he was a better all around musician and certainly he was a great songwriter. But, go on to the various discussion boards and you'll see what I mean. Kelly & Clancy are consistently rated at the top, Makem isn't even in the equation.

  • Well its the first time ive heard Liam sing this made up from different songs G R E A T !!!!

  • Liam is a great singer.

  • well done again ,have never heard this one before
