Indeed it is a version of the Leaving of Liverpool, but there is no "authorised version", It is part of a tradition which constantly evolved. I can recall an evening spent on the forward messdeck, spent contriving a few n verses for this song, which, by the way, was also recorded by Nana Mouskouri, would you believe it!
I have never fealt a loss of someong outside me family as hard as I found when My hero, my icon, and my idol passed away. Though I know he is in a better place I will miss his kind and loving nature and his passionate music that spoke deep to my soul. Never will we see an equal to Liam he was truly a one of kind singer and I will deeply miss him and hold his songs and words close to my heart until I hopfully get to see him again someday. Farewell to thee my old friend.
Since his passing in Dec of '09, it has been hard for me to find the words to express the sadness inside my heart. Even now, I find it hard to type for the tears that blur my sight.
Have tears running down my faceas I listen to the beauty of this voice. singer and song fused together in beautiful harmony. Unique. RIP Forever in my heart. Thank you.
The music in heaven just got better. God speed Liam. You will not be missed as you will live forever. You were the last man standing and all of us, your fans, will carry on for you.
@Kilbwerk It means 'may his faithful soul be at gods side' . . . . .its quite a common tribute to pay to a deceased person in Ireland . . its used the same way RIP is used in the english language.
R.I.P. to ya Liam, Gent and legend. Spent my childhood listening to the Clancy brothers. Heavy in my heart to learn of Liams death today. Ireland can be proud of a world famous Legend. God bless you Liam
I'd like to offer a comparison here that might help. I absolutely love lobster. I'd walk a mile for prime rib. Both are wonderful and wonderfully different. They are unbeatable together. I've got solo pieces that Liam Clancy does that I think are incomparable. Some of Tommy Makem's pieces will make me stop what I'm doing to listen (now you know why there was that tie up on the highway). But put prime rib and lobster together and it's a feast. Makem and Clancy together is a duo that has no equal.
first seen liam and tommy in the baymount in strandhill in 1977 and will always be and admirer of his unique style of prose and song. a true irish legend
About this song in his book "No Direction Home - The Life & Music of Bob Dylan " Robert Shelton wrote :
" FAREWELL. 1. Copyright Warner Bros.Inc 1963b 73; 3. Judy Collins; RECOLLECTIONS (Elektra EKS 74055) 4. W & D; BOB DYLAN; 5. First published in " Broadside " under the title "Fare-The-Well. "
It's a mistake .recording by The Kingston Trio Decca master # 13,548 for the album NICK -BOB -JOHN released December 7, 1964 on title Farewell (Fare Thee Well My Own True Love)
Tommy Makem , one of the greatest Irish troubadors of all time, Liam Clancy , simply the finest balladeer alive , both magnificent sons of Ireland . No contest , Liam hands down as a singer, but as an entertainer , Tommy holds his own, one an entertainer with the power to command a hall, the other , a singer of such power and sensitivity , he can leave you utterly breathless and Oscar Brand and Bob Dylan say Liam is the greatest ballad singer period !! Eirinn Gu Brath agus Albainn Gu Brath !!
Tommy may have had a stronger voice but no where near as quality as Liam, not even close, and I loved Makem but Clancy is in a class by himself. The only one even close is maybe Luke Kelly
I guess we just disagree, but I don't for a minute want to give the impression I don't believe Makem was a great singer. He just didn't have the texture and expression in his voice that Liam did, especially with ballads. Also, I believe if you were to take a poll of people who love Irish music as to who was the best Tommy would finish behind both Clancy & Kelly.
That is ridiculous. Tommy had much better singing style and had much more emotion in his singing. And Kelly shouldnt even be in this conversation. Tommy was ONLY known as the Godfather of Irish music and the Bard Of Armagh because HE WAS THE BEST. Ok. Thats it. Nobody is better than Tommy.
You are truly a dedicated fan, Makem was absolutely great and that I will never deny. And although he wasn't quite a good a singer as Clancy and Kelly he was a better all around musician and certainly he was a great songwriter. But, go on to the various discussion boards and you'll see what I mean. Kelly & Clancy are consistently rated at the top, Makem isn't even in the equation.

And a beautiful person, in reality.
We all grieve for his loss, my friends.
We all miss him. And all our children will lack his presence, worst of all
You, maryattracta,
you do not cry alone, my dear. As Liam once told me: We all grieve with your loss, my friend.
He was a beautiful person. Musical archive. An Irish landmark.
We ALL grieve with your loss, my dear. Ass we weep for our own, as well.
Liam would have it that way.
