No, treadmills aren't "low impact" when you use them for running. Running in any form greatly impacts your joints relative to ellipticals et al. Ellipticals are low impact.

I used to have bad knees from sports, but then gained weight & had the same prob. Since then, lost weight & found that interval training on the treadmill running for 45 seconds then about 3.0 mph for 45 secs works well for me in weight loss. Everyone is different, but I felt it in only 3 days! Try it if you want, I think it'll help!
