@LDX97 it was on, just tuned real low and loose. I was tracking a ballad at the time, hitting soft, etc, and we just threw this down for fun while the engineer was solving a computer issue in between takes.

@Jundrami very reasonable question. This was shot during a recording session, hence the drums were mic'd up. My friend Rafi was there, filming bits to be edited together later (with audio bits from the finished album) in a "making of" type clip.

When we were in between takes, he was just shooting some random drum stuff, and hopped up on a case behind my drums. He was like "JC, this looks cool, play something," so...I played this. Since the engineer was loading up the next session, there was no

@Jundrami (cont) thought of "wait, let's get the good audio," as the whole thing was just kinda done off the cuff. That's also why the snare sounds wierd, I had it tuned down real low, cos we were tracking a ballad at the time. In hindsight, coulda shoulda woulda, etc, I wish I'd had the time to mess with it more, but I was under the gun to track 25 songs in 5 days, so as soon as the next session was loaded up, it was "back to work, J!!!!"

@yngwiemaiden48 no, it's not. AVH programmed a floor tom pad with his kick sound to record the intro. That was when he was big into those Simmons electronic pads. Research it a little, you'll see. I've read that in several interviews with him through the years.

In Modern Drummer back in the eighties (I apologize whih month/year. Jesus I'm getting old!) Alex Van Halen had his own column where he stated that he used a delayed pedal effect to simulate not one but two extra bass drums in the intro. He was answering one of thousands of letters that he got regarding the intro. He said unless you had the money to out and buy the equipment, it would be impossible to duplicate.

I think of all the people who have done "their version" of this song yours is the closest. I hope to record myself playing the song and explain what Alex did. So many are not playing it right and so many believe he did overdubs, which i think you just proved that he doesn't and so many believe that the first 5 seconds is played on the kick drums which i know its played on an electric tom that is programmed with a kick sound. How do i know....cuz thats how i have my drumset set up. Awesome video!

@FuckinMetal3694 bro Alex played the INTRO on a simmons tom pad programmed as a third kick, Intro is played with hands then the feet come in for the shuffle. Search Hot for Teacher Montreal 1984 he plays it that way. Alex couldn't play that fast with his feet.
