  • @MercedesBenzGKlasse Development started around May 1992, but you were very close. The final design might have been chosen in 1994-1995, as the 2001 W203 C-Class was approved in early December 1995.

  • typical mercedes... a very safe car

  • Looks good, he w221 seems to do a lot better but thats to be expected

  • This car did phenominal, (as ALL s-classes do). These people just dont know what they're talking about.

  • i have one and it feels alot safer than a Corolla or Camry.

  • it might look bad cause it was in 1999....... This is amazing for a car that old!!!

  • @pizza5647 It was a 1996-97 prototype, as all the orange crash test cars usually are tested during the development phase.

  • i want to buy this car used as my first car because i cant afford the new one -_- but in my country it is too expensive because it is very rare

  • @cardude1992 And how are you going to service and repair it, I think that it will blow completely your first car budget.

  • @Luisgtm95 service and repair is VERY cheap were i live. its the car thats really expensive.

  • i have this car well my mom does ... guys this car was built and manfactured in 1998

  • Not just great performance (allthough this is only a lab test) but the whole car is great. I'd have the Brabus S V12 6,7 version.

  • not THAT bad... I expected worse

  • expensive to repair...

  • That does not look that good. The chassis shouldn't buckle like that, and it looked like the roof caved in a little bit too. Would have expected better from a $60k+ benz.

  • @jon9000jon77 yes it is..... 11 years is old for a car.

  • phew.. that's great.. one of the best crash tests i have ever seen

    awesome car

  • @spanky489

    its a mercedes my friend

  • @YerkireYerkirChi i know my friend, i have driven 2 ^^. 1. Benz S-500 1999 year and 2. Benz S-320 2001. nice engineering i will always like audi and mercedes the best! their quality is immaculate.

  • Laminated windshield thats why its so strong.

  • @metalicpsp All cars have the front windshield laminated...Mercedes just has a really strong crumple zone and passenger safety cell always stays intact. People who comment bad on this just look at external damage which means nothing...

  • I don't get some of the comments here. This car appears to have performed very well. This is a good example of what you WANT to see in a crash. The front end absorbed all the force and the safety cage suffered minimal deformation. Many cars that got an IIHS best rating of Good had more roof/safety cage deformation than this. I don't know how anyone can look at this video and not be impressed with now WELL the car performed.

  • Like I said, you can thumbs down the comment, but it's fact, so do what you like I know the truth.

  • I don't see the problem, looks fine IMO

passenger cell not touched, crash absorbed into the front.

  • speed it 64 KM/PH

  • ooooooou maaaan i have s430 what is it better than chines car only(((((

  • wow.... i thought this would be a 5 star crash test for sure.... some how, i dont feel safe driving my w220 anymore

I could say a lot about the W220 but I do not wish to frighten owners. you can put air bags and sips bags and head bags, but if the basic build is not up to it then ?? what else can I say.

The 140 proved to be a Tank and the 221 is now proving it's worth but the 220 is simply not up to a serious accident, sorry to say this as I own one too but I use a chinese car as a daily driver. I have been around smashed cars long enough to know when a car is OK or NOT so it is your choice.

  • well... in my defence... the s500 is supposed to be better then any bmw(back then) NOT in performance though... and BMW has always been top in saftey. today still is. BMW has saved my life twice. i just expected more from the best car in the world at year 2000.

  • you just made me frightened!!!!

  • it is catastrofic.this car and that size....they half at 2 peaces

  • That's a lot of crumple zone!

  • Jesus Christ! Then u're telling me Mercedes are safe cars? :) last proper S class was the W140... Very safe car

  • That's a body shop gent who rebuilds cars, he knows what he's on about. The W220 whether you like it or not was the black sheep of the the S Classes. MB was in bed with Chrysler and that's what happened. I work on these for a living and let me tell you, the 220 is not a good MB car. That's the truth. Go ahead and thumbs down this comment, but it will remain true anyhow.

  • As far as you know are there any other black sheeps in mercedes?

  • @Andrea1491to

    Mercedes A-Classe

  • @32ContreBombarde This has nothing to do with Chrysler. This test in this video was conducted in 1996 or 1997 before the merger even took place. This is the result of budgeting in the mid-1990s and MB being headed by the accountants(rather than engineers), when this design was approved. The DaimlerChrysler merger took place around when the production version of this car was later unveiled in 1998, after 6 years of development ended.

  • Them headlights love to pop out huh...
