As someone who was a christian for over 30 years, and as an atheist, I never had a problem with anyone using decorations, singing carols, or any other part of the celebration. I love Christmas! Maybe not for the same reason as christians do, but for the family, the food, and the general feeling of hope it brings. But I do think it's unfair to prohibit signs put up by atheists. We have the right to express ourselves too. Can't we just compromise?
I am not religious in any way. However I love Christmas. I also do not support removal of Christmas displays. I also get very annoyed that we have to add muslim holiday displays as well.
You neglected to mention that Christmas is just a pagan celebration which was hijacked for proselyzation purposes by the early church. Thou shall not steal, yet thou didst just that.
Hello Jack. I Tried to see and listen to God for over 30 years, I had as much faith as anybody could until I realized that God had NEVER answered a single prayer I had ever prayed. Sure things happened that I thought were answers, but do you know what I found when I looked at WHO answered those prayers? I found those around me who cared. We take care of EACH OTHER and ourselves. God's not there to hear your prayers, so don't thank God for what man has done for you.
Wow, that was ignorant. Many people tend to think God will answer at least one of your prayers, heres the thing, in those 30 years did you ever stop to think, "I might be praying for the wrong things". God's will always comes before yours. I hate to think the only reason you wouldn't believe in God is because he didn't answer your prayers. In the end, God will do what is needed for your life. Prayer is more like giving God your input on the situation and he wants complete honesty.
Funny how that is ALWAYS the answer I get when it comes to prayer. When I said I had as much faith as anyone, thats exactly what I meant. I knew how to pray, and it was ALWAYS that "gods" will be done. I came to the realization that when a prayer was "answered" it ALWAYS was either myself or someone else that answered it, not a deity. Open your eyes and look and see if you can find ANY circumstance where you or someone else was not the answer to your prayers. Give credit where credit is due.
the LAST thing I would ever do would be to give thanks to MAN. what a shame. that's a scary thing to do. Just like when people say to trust in their heart. Scary stuff, your heart deceives you.
I don't think it's sad at all. As a matter of fact, I consider myself extremely lucky to have finally realized it! Never again will I use "I'll pray for you" as a lame excuse to not reach out and help someone in need. I will be more aware of problems and will do everything I can to help. I also appreciate everything anyone does for me to a much greater extent, it means much more to me now than it ever did before. Sad? Absolutely NOT! Just a lot more aware and appreciative of people!
You have that choice. Holidays weren't made to worship God, we were, our lives are meant to revolve around that. And why should God take the time to make his prescence known to you if you won't take the time to listen. Trust me, its practical to doubt, but its dumb to assume.
christmas is actually a pagan holiday that dates back before jesus's time...honoring the sun god....even though i know this i still celebrate it for the heck of it and not to ruin the tradition.......i celebrate it in his name either way so wateve.
Your neering face and obvious anger have no place in this world. You are positively seething, and it shows. Holier than thou is the stock and trade for a mediocrity like you, and it's not god's fault, it's your own! deuche bag.
do u know that b4 catholicism, there was a way bigger god on rome, its name was mithras, december 25th was the comemoration for that god...
wen rome became catholic important ppl from that time decided to celebrate jesus birth on that the same day as mithras, to get more adepts, and bcoz that was already a traditional day fro rome ppl.
interesting thing ios that even the food is the same, so actualy, december 25th is a pagan comemoration and with the same habits
I celebrate christmas because well, quite frankly, winter is cold and bleak (where i live anyways), so it's nice to have an excuse to celebrate random crap and relax for a few days
He was believed to have been born around august, but still debatable. But despite that... Christ never asked us to celebrate his birth but to celebrate his death. I dont personally celebrate christmas for that fact but i am all down for the being kind to each other, but then again it should be an every day accurance.
Enjoy the holiday whatever you call it or whatever your excuse is to celebrate it. At the end of the day it's about family, friends, togetherness and good will towards your fellow human beings.

Jack. I love you to the full extent allowed by Christianity. Feel free to marry my sister. You are a great man without pretensions to being such. Happy Jesus' birthday day to you too, for whatever day you choose to celebrate it. Every day right. Later, buddy.
everyone thats is reading this, please pay close attention to how nearly every single video by this asshole is about how other people are WRONG about everything because they dont live like HIM. He is a proud and arrogant man that walks around bragging about how he is doing the work of a God.
Jack, you cant just be a normal modest person that celebrate christmas just to gather with family and have a good genuine time. you need to bitch about everything and complain about everyone with your utterly arrogant facial expressions and your uncontrollable desire to emphasize that other people are always wrong about everything and they dont live life correctly. I genuinely hope that you will wake up one day and realize that this faith business in no way is transforming into a better person.
Deism-- God has, does and is transforming my life in as much as I long to know Him above all else which quite honestly I fail at on many occasions. The love of Christ is one I cannot avoid. The Creator's presence is proclaimed clearly for me through out creation and to Him I bring my messed up life.
I dont see why some Christians wand the date all for themselves there are a lot of religions and events happening around those days celebrating one thing or the other why cant that just be accepted as what it is a holiday for all where everyone celebrates something about life witch is the purpose of it.
Thanks for being thoughtfulness about some fundamental Christmas issues..
I can also understand why some Christians are uncomfortable with accepting the historical realities of Christmas. It is a short distance from recognizing that "Christmas" is a historical lie to seeing the myriad other deceptions & cruelties perpetrated by powerful men who used Christianity as a means to control & dominate the masses.
Truth is very dangerous to faith which is why so few believers know their own history.
AtheistJohn- I find the truth to be far firmer ground than the ignorance and misunderstanding. Many people whether religious or not do not know their history I think it's more a matter of desire not intentional avoidance.
TogetherForPeace, I appreciate your point and I agree with you that most ignorance is not intentional.
Still, Christians who know their religious history are a rarity in my experience and it has become almost a cliche in atheist circles that we atheists tend to know more about religious history and the contents of the Bible than most believers we run into.
Many of us atheists deconverted after gaining such knowledge, hence the reason I suggest truths can be hazardous to faith in general.
I wish you would clarify a bit more, but perhaps that would break up the nice presentation. But I hope you don't have a beef with "Happy Holidays" or with not allowing christian things in courthouse.
Although I am not a believer, I do enjoy spending the month with my family between semesters of school and having the decorations and the (better) songs, but I do find the church service rather rude. To much "gather up the believers" type songs, and not enough global inclusion for me of people.
Completely agree with the video. And I do not like it how some "Christians" let Christmas be the one time of the year they are generous and cheerful because of cute, precious, little baby Jesus. My Jesus is a mighty savior who works in my life 365 days a year...not just on the day the Roman Catholics decided he was born.
Aw...I changed my mind and take back my dare. :) That can't be good for you to have a bleaching chemical right under your nose for a half hour or so. Have a happy healthy holiday Jack! A younger Santa look is great too!
I was brought up secular and am spiritual agnostic, but I celebrate Christmas because it's a time to share with family and friends and I just really enjoy singing Christmas carols. I like to celebrate the winter solstice.
Writtenjustice- nothing wrong with enjoying the presents. I find however that sometimes I desire the presents more than I desire God which really takes away from the essence of what joy and peace in life is...a relationship with the Creator. Have a Merry Christmas :)
i celebrate christmas, even thought i don't believe in god and jesus, the same reason i celebate christmas, even though i don't believe in santa clause. CAUSE ITS FUN =D
presents and food. thats all ^_^
i don't have to believe in jesus or santa clause to celebrate on that day =P
Amen Jack! My thoughts exactly! People get too hung up on being exact instead of the true message of what we are celebrating. Well said. Icelebrate the birth of my savior. Not a pagan celebration.
I am a Christian and I honestly don't care that much if Christmas is "stolen" from the Christians to change to the theme of Santa Claus. The Bible never says to have Christmas OR Easter be celebrated, does it? I don't see the point in Christians making it a big deal then.
Well, if you recognize that the dates can be wrong, then you begin to wonder what else can be wrong with religion, and eventually you find it out, and then you become an Atheist, watch out Jack. The house of cards is showing a crack.
Except this date for Jesus' birth that became Christmas had nothing to do with the Bible. The Bible is the cornerstone of Christianity. The Bible never gave a date for the event of Jesus' birth, and nobody was able to prove it to happen on any day or month of the year (but the year has been confirmed). It was hastily voted on and not something in scripture. Therefore, this was not a mistake by religion (although maybe "religious leaders").
You're quick to point fingers and slow to investigate.
I always wondered why Christians in the West, as opposed to the Orthodox Church, consider Christmas as more significant than Easter. I would think that would be the more significant holiday.
Good message, Jack. So many Christians "fight over" manger scenes, crosses, Ten Commandments displays, etc., on public grounds because they want the government to appear to give preference to Christianity above any other religion. But, as you say, that isn't what Christmas should be about.
Christmas is a Pagan holiday renamed with the meaning corrupted. We celebrate the Winter Solstice because the darkest night has past and the newborn sun has come. It is a celebration of the coming of the light. We feast to show our confidence that we still have enough of the necessities to see us through until spring when food and resources will again be abundant. We will survive until the first harvest. It is a celebration of hope and of gratitude that all things needed for life will be renewed
give lazarus and the rest of your family my regards please also.
wishing you and yours joy and prosperity for 2010.
i celebrate xmas insofar as we give gifts and feast. this is a family tradition, my family are all atheists (well, except for my sister). this year, i'll be all alone on xmas, as its their mother's year to have them, so i'll be doing precious little celebrating.
The funny thing is, how come earlier christians incorporated the pagan festival so easiliy into christian beliefs. Modern christians here and there can take such strong issue with it, but early christianity quite easily assimilated. Not just with christmass, but with the name of days, name of months and new year practises.
Why?.because christianity started of as a religion not a relationship.
it was all built to bring the pagan rome and the Christian rome together. "Christianity" wasn't founded until this. thats why there are certain pagan-esk(sp) dates/names/locations and such in The Bible.
I was ready to object to your video, because I assumed you were going to advocate taking a stand on the 'war on christmas'. I would then give you my speech on seperation of church and state. But what you are proposing here, simply being christ-like in rememberance of him, I have nothing against that. I'm not sure if what you believe is factually correct, but clearly your goal here is harmless and with good intention. Merry Christmas TFP!
Jere 10:1 (NKJV) Hear the word which Yahweh speaks to you, O house of Israel. 2 Thus says Yahweh: "Do not learn the way of the Gentiles; Do not be dismayed at the signs of heaven, For the Gentiles are dismayed at them. 3 For the customs of the peoples are futile; For one cuts a tree from the forest, The work of the hands of the workman, with the ax. 4 They decorate it with silver and gold; They fasten it with nails and hammers So that it will not topple.
Likely the "annunciation" was indeed around the time of the winter solstice, December 24th. If Jesus fulfills the 8th day of the festival of booths on the 8th day of life for his circumcision then we can calculate precisely the day Jesus was born, which was September 14/15, 2 BCE.
So, just so you know.
But as you say, it's not about the dates but what we reflect on.
I'll be honest with you, I celebrate Christmas because that's when one side of my family celebrates it. The other side celebrates the 'holiday' on Christmas Eve, which I also celebrate. On occasion I have a 3rd Christmas celebration.
For me it's allot less about "when". I probably celebrate the holiday because everybody else is and hey... it's fun! It still doesn't change the importance of Christ's birth, and during this season we can keep that close to our heart as we try to be more like him.
On Christmas Day unlike my last 18 christmas' i plan to thank god and the lord jesus christ for everything they have done in my life that I havent seen before, and share his love with others who share his love too! god bless you jack and have a merry christmas

This is the routine my family has settled into:
Xmas Eve: The opening of the presents by the Xmas tree (usually accompanied by some Xmas carols in the background)
Xmas Day: Turkey, booze & a boardgame for the survivors
Xmas Day Evening: Dr Who, a movie, then video skype conversations with any siblings not present
Boxing Day: a walk along the beach
No Santa, Jesus, Elfs or any other imaginary beings required.
Xtianity nicked this pagan festival because it's a good idea. Winter party yay!

I was brought up secular and am spiritual agnostic, but I celebrate Christmas because it's a time to share with family and friends and I just really enjoy singing Christmas carols. I like to celebrate the winter solstice.

I'm a Christian, but I celebrate it because it brings people together and of the presents.
Yes, I love the presents, but why is that so bad?
Writtenjustice 2 years ago
Writtenjustice- nothing wrong with enjoying the presents. I find however that sometimes I desire the presents more than I desire God which really takes away from the essence of what joy and peace in life is...a relationship with the Creator. Have a Merry Christmas :)
TogetherForPeace 2 years ago
Thank you very much for your comment, Mr. Peace. I feel I have to agree with you... you truly are a good example of the love of Christ.

Merry Christmas Jack..........You can lose your faith and still celebratae Christmas...That's my wish for you this season.

Well, if you recognize that the dates can be wrong, then you begin to wonder what else can be wrong with religion, and eventually you find it out, and then you become an Atheist, watch out Jack. The house of cards is showing a crack.
rednecktrucker1969 2 years ago
Except this date for Jesus' birth that became Christmas had nothing to do with the Bible. The Bible is the cornerstone of Christianity. The Bible never gave a date for the event of Jesus' birth, and nobody was able to prove it to happen on any day or month of the year (but the year has been confirmed). It was hastily voted on and not something in scripture. Therefore, this was not a mistake by religion (although maybe "religious leaders").
You're quick to point fingers and slow to investigate.

Jesus was born at the feast of tabernacles. Manger is a translation of "sukoth" - tabernacle/booth
keith1y 2 years ago
Where's the information that says that?
scarter180 2 years ago
That is the purpose of the feast, to celebrate "God dwelling among = tabernacling with men".

Dec 24/5th is most probably Jesus conception, celebration of the day that the word became flesh.

the reason we still have Christmas as tradition is because people get depressed in the winter because of it being cold and it getting dark early .

Remembrance? How can you forget? There is a torture device almost everywhere you look, It's called the cross.

It's actually a means of execution and more of a demonstration by Romans declaring, "Screw with us and this is what you get".

SSanf 2 years ago
Also a means of co opting the major religious holiday of the biggest rival to Christians at the time, the cult of Mithra.
HeavyTrafficAhead 2 years ago
Well yes, except that Mithraism was not a cult. It was a major religion.

merry christmas jack.
give lazarus and the rest of your family my regards please also.
wishing you and yours joy and prosperity for 2010.
i celebrate xmas insofar as we give gifts and feast. this is a family tradition, my family are all atheists (well, except for my sister). this year, i'll be all alone on xmas, as its their mother's year to have them, so i'll be doing precious little celebrating.
take care.
gothatfunk 2 years ago
The funny thing is, how come earlier christians incorporated the pagan festival so easiliy into christian beliefs. Modern christians here and there can take such strong issue with it, but early christianity quite easily assimilated. Not just with christmass, but with the name of days, name of months and new year practises.
Why?.because christianity started of as a religion not a relationship.
cjunk351 2 years ago
it was all built to bring the pagan rome and the Christian rome together.

Nice vid.
Happy times to you and your loved ones.
Larsinger58 2 years ago
I like saying "happy solstice", because that's what all these December holidays are, they all fall around the Winter solstice.
mrpitchf0rk 2 years ago
I'll be honest with you, I celebrate Christmas because that's when one side of my family celebrates it. The other side celebrates the 'holiday' on Christmas Eve, which I also celebrate. On occasion I have a 3rd Christmas celebration.
For me it's allot less about "when". I probably celebrate the holiday because everybody else is and hey... it's fun! It still doesn't change the importance of Christ's birth, and during this season we can keep that close to our heart as we try to be more like him.
