really 20 years ago! Wow, remember watcjing this late on as a lad.....gutted for Langer. But look how young they all look esp Mark Calc, and you forget about the great late Payne Stewart........I remember the grudge matach between Seve & Ole against Azinger & Beck!
Is he using a conventional putting grip on the long putt, then changing to a right hand grabs the left forearm grip on the 5 footer? Had he had the long putter here, he would have made it.
The behaviour of some of the spectators at this Ryder Cup really soured the entire competition as a sporting spectacle - and that element remains each time its played in the USA. I think if the USA team becames the Americas, and allowed players like Mike Weir and Angela Cabrera to compete - the braindead jinjoistic assholes who ruined this event would be less likely to turn up !!
Hi Bat. I suspect the line of people you are referring to were not lining the fairway. The ball landed near a stream of people making their way to the 18th green thru the sandy wasteland. My eye-witness is a highly regarded golf expert and he was standing on the left side of the 18th fairway and saw the sail over his head. He also saw the ball come back 2 or 3 seconds later. Definitely not a bounce. Also pro golfers like Langer don't get the line wrong by 50yds. I'm still a Hale irwin fan tho'.
"Level on the tee, Irwin hit the mother, father and extended family of all snap hooks, winging his ball 50 yards to the left. By the time the players had walked up the fairway, however, the ball was sitting up nicely in the semi-rough. "It was pretty strange," mused Langer afterwards. "From the tee it looked like he was 45, 50 yards left. When we got there it was on the edge of the fairway.""
I've met an eye-witness of this incident. The ball was thrown back.
" The Forgotten Shot". One of the most embarrassing golfing moments. Just before this clip, Hale Irwin had snap hooked into the wilderness only for a kindly soul to throw it all the way back onto the fairway. Langer was robbed and then tagged as "the guy who lost the Ryder Cup". All the TV commentators choked on calling it. They still do.
People forget the the 2 great putts langer made just to get that match to the final hole. That was the ryder cup in the years when it was most intense and the pressure he must have felt would have been unbelievable. Most players would have took years to recover a miss like that but what did langer do? He won the very next tournament he played in!
Biggest pressure putt ever in golf. A putt for the Cup!

At 2:07: Ray is thinking "why couldn't I have played that shot and Hale have played all my long iron shots this week?"

remember watching this as if it were yesterday. Aged 8! The UK commentator said 'and its just slipped by the edge' or words to that effect.
